  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SSD: more $$$ Confusion ????

EPIC is possible because of REDCODE. Without it we would be shooting to refrigerator drives or some dopey RGB codec.

Jim

Absolutely, I thank Graeme every day. I'm up editing gorgeous MX footage right now off an internal software raid, no problemo. I shudder to think what a workable system would cost without the magic of RedCode.

EPIC without SSD doesn't make sense. So do we have to pay about $2,000 more for Stage 2 package or is it to early to ask this question?

Too early... we are likely to price the SSD module the same as the CF module, but you'll need to buy some media. You don't have to if you want to shoot 5K @ 24fps to CF cards. But that is about all the CF cards can do. Up the frame rate and you are looking for trouble.

Jim

Hi Jim
Yes... SSD is the only way to go. The best way.
Drives are absolete.
But I'm in Stage 02 but also want info about any payment on the SSDs.

Are you guys on PST time? If so... what are you thinking?

I have an excuse... I'm so excited at what is about to happen that I can hardly stand it. Sleep is not an option. Not even Angry Birds is helping... :-)

Jim

So shooting 24fps at 5k and 6:1 HDRx will take roughly 4 times as much space as 4k on the R1, i.e. rule of thumb 2 gig per minute?

And if Angry Birds doesn't help, try "HarborMaster".

The excitement travels all across the ocean.

That would be fantastic, it gets better every day.
A module and 2 drive kit similar to the RED ONE battery and charger package deal would be real nice.

Sounds good and customer-friendly as always. Thanks!

Jim, why are the SSD media so expensive? (It's not an accusation, just a question!) What is inside them? SLC or MLC? Is it a RAID system? How much MB/S do they have to deliver constantly?
And do you think the price will come down once they are mass produced for you?

Thank you,
Felix

I've got Angry Deadlines keeping me up all night.

Jim

Epic for me is a dream come true... i cannot thank you enough.
You are excited and you deserve to be.
Counting the minutes to have a epic on my hands.

I have several computers on SSD.
Work great. Fast and Zero faults.
That why is expensive.

Moore's law will kick in at some point I'm sure. We have priced them at what we think will happen, not what is now. That would be too expensive. The data rates in these SSDs is high. We have the exact same problem as with CF cards. Manufacturers specs don't match real performance so we had to pay a premium for guaranteed performance. Deanan has been pulling the remaining hairs out of his head working on this. It amazes all of us how loose the memory guys are with specs. Our customers don't need to worry about it... we do. But I can say that this is no easy trick. Deanan has the MB/sec. specs.

Yes but not that expensive. I have an SSD in my PC as well, 120 GB SATA, 200 Euros. But I guess these normal ones are not good enough for some reason, probably the datarate. Still it would be nice to know if they would work up until a certain framerate/compression.

I know that you loath to give time frames, and understand why; but also hope that you understand that it would help us in planning.

Could you maybe say something along the lines of Epic #1.000/3.000 will in no way be ready before xx-xx/yy-yy and more likely be ready in zz-zz/aa-aa

Thank you, that is interesting to hear. Strange what these SSD manufacturers get away with. But would you say that you might certify certain thirdparty products for lower framerates/higher compression later on?

I must say, Final Cut is starting to piss me off though with it's damn finiky media management "can't find data in file A001-blaa-blaa-blaa"
I hope Storm arrives soon and develops some robust editing tools.

Yes... just like we have with CF cards. The camera will analyze how fast the media is and let you know what you can get away with.

The only reason I won't is because this is the area we are the worst at.

Thanks Jim, that is great news.
I'm working hard to be able to afford a Scarlet + SSDmodule when it's ready.
