  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SSD: more $$$ Confusion ????

People want more resolution, less compression and higher data rates. Well folks, that equals more data. Good thing is that 500GB 3.5" drives are now 3TB drives and an 8GB or 16GB CF card is now a 64GB or 128GB or 256GB SSD. This is what we all signed up for. No turning back. :-)

This is precisely why people hanging on to CF thinking need to chill out.

With the above formula, a 64GB SSD IS (practically) an 8GB and so on.

All the more reason precision data management, optimal offload speeds and sensible storage/back up solutions will be tantamount to EPIC professionals in 2011 and 2012.

Kick ass thread.

Hi Jim, I was wondering if you guys were still thinking of enabling low bitrate redcode settings as well. I know you were testing them earlier on in the year.

For what it'sworth I think that it would be a fantastic idea. A lot of the stuff I shoot right now are on EX3's for TV. I would love to be able to go on location with my scarlet, an SSD and be able to record all day long :)

I wouldn't worry about lower bitrates showing the RED brand in bad light as some on these boards may have suggested a while back. These are professional cameras and professionals know how to select the bitrate they want.

Also, I remember hearing that you tested RC15...did you guys go any lower? What was it like?

I think we will go as low as REDCODE 25 but it will be marked in yellow or red... which means you better have a good reason to use it.

that is pretty funny. good one Jim.

The bottom line is there will be options and should fit into a wide spectrum of workflows. One man's RC28 is another man's RC100.

I'm glad to see CF's going away for the most part. Too limiting for Red.

I'm sorry if I missed it, but why 1.8" over 2.5"? Just curious if 1.8" is more of a niche market than 2.5" and there may be issues with speed & supply.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

We have a modular system. All options are open to the future...

The 1.8" makes a lot of size sense.

as long as the drives meet the specs, i would prefer the smaller form factor of the 1.8. it just makes more sense.

What is going on with h.264 module? Can we use CF cards for that?

General question, Jim. How are all the modules coming along?
What kind of availability do you plan for the release?

In a nutshell, here's what I (think) I know, plus a little bit of what I know I know, some of what I know I don't know, and finally, nothing of what I don't know I don't know.

i'm pretty sure I know that the Epic will ship with an SSD side module (an optional adapter will allow the use of CF cards for those who like watching maple sap drip from trees).

What I think I know is that since this is now the default media writer on the Epic, it will either have to be a non-charge item or the price of the Epic will have to be raised.

What I know I don't know is how what I think I know will be handled.

The things I don't know I don't know could fill a book.

I know what you mean, or at least I think I know what you know, though I'm sure I don't know what you know you don't.

Ps what time is it? I'm on a scout in Bhutan.

Yes to CF cards and H.264 module. That one makes perfect sense.

Jim

Great move with the SSD drives. I have always struggled with the CF cards, largely because my television work needs 30 fps. The record time has also been problematic. The big Red drives were heavy, and a little hard to manage all that data. I think the SSD will hit a sweet spot right in between, and Moore will be working in our favor.

Thanks a lot for the quick answer Jim, you're the best. :)

I like the idea behind highlighting RC25 red/yellow. Kinda like how high ISO's are sequestered away on a lot of DSLRs until you enable them.

I'd hate to be a nuisance but I have another question: Is that RC25 on Scarlet, Epic or both? RC25@ 5K is one thing, RC25@ 3K is another ballpark :001_cool:

Just so you know... REDCODE 3:1 and 2.5:1 will also be marked with yellow... you had better have a good reason to shoot this.

Jim

VFX would need it... I was wondering if a Light Peak Module would Handle 1:1 Compression. of course connected to a Powerful RAID. the Specs say up to 100meters

VFX people have said that they have never had better footage to work with than the RED ONE M-X (at 7.5:1). Why would they need 3:1? Just curious... I can see 5:1 no problem.

It is the nature of the beast, the more we get the more we want, just to see if we can get it, and because we are Gluttons.
I know it sounds Ridiculous but would not it be Cool to record 1:1 from epic?
