  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Speedbooster tests

4k Dragon is the sweet spot? That's so ironic given Raven... That said, doesn't 4k Dragon with Speedbooster comes out to about 1.3x, which isn't much better than 5k Dragon's FOV (and actually less than 6k's 1.2x FOV).

Well I need to work the figures out as there are many variables on speedboosters. But working back 5k FF gives just about FF on a 35mm camera. Yes very ironic ;) All I was trying to do was get S35 at 4k really anything else a bonus.

Yeah, I mean, don't get me wrong; this is rad (extra ~stop of light is nothing to scoff at) and FF35 FOV at 5k has benefits (lower compression, higher FPS, etc)... It's just funny how Raven seems so prime for this, but probably isn't feasible.

It would be wonderful if they did have an option for a front end mod on the Raven, might be eating into other areas of their business though. But don't see what there is to loose. Even if there is a trade of on image quality, look at Sony. The debayering artifacts for their 1080p high frame rates are very poor on the whole but no one says a word.

Here is a frame size test. 6k, 5k and 4k. Then 4k with the speedbooster.

With the speedbooster the frame size is greater that 5k and not that far off 6k.

What do you mean by "trade of on image quality"? Do we lose "image quality" with speed booster?

Do we lose "image quality" with speed booster?

In some scenario you gain a purple fringe, and general CA.

Btw, this screams Raven. I guess it would have to wait for the DSMC² Scarlet.

There are some polish guys doing lens-mounts (i think they have been approved by RED), maybe that's an option for a collaboration.
You can find them on ebay: http://stores.ebay.de/c7-adapters

Currently there are 4 types of optics from metabones, right? 0.71, 0.71 Ultra, 0.64 (BMCC) and 0.58 (BMPCC).

In theory 5kFF should be possible with a 0.71 speedbooster. 4kFF with 0.58. Well, if calculated with 36mm width for FF35 lenses... So i wonder why 4k is currently the usability limit. I mean, usually the 0.71 e-mount speedboosters are used to get FF35 to APS-C (which equals 5kHD Dragon).

Watching this carefully... It's gonna happen and I'd rather not have to hack my own!

Anyone know what the FFD range is for the backfocus adjustment mechanism on RED cameras? If it's a wide enough range, maybe it would be possible to just mount focal reducer optics in a normal EF-to-EF adapter (maybe a short EF macro extension tube with that keeps electrical contacts for AF etc) and then just compensate for the difference with the sensor FFD adjustment? I guess the range probably isn't enough but that would certainly be a lot easier than having to hack it into the mount. Alternatively the shortest flange mount for RED is Leica-M so it would make a lot of sense to just put those focal reducer optics into a Leica-M Body to Nikon F or PL mount lens adapter, and those should have plenty of room for the optics. At least there would most likely be enough FFD adjustment range to compensate for the focal reducer's effect.

No one knows the backfocus adjustment range? can someone with a camera test it out? Just imagine how easy it would be to add a focal reducer if it could just go inside an extension tube, no need to even mess with the mount.

I would love to have a medium format > 35mm speed booster... I've heard Kipon are releasing one later in the year.

Ben,

The Kipon medium format SB looks like it's designed for E-mount cameras unfortunately, although they do mention that there are other versions in the works.

A medium format SB for RED does seem a lot more achievable compared to Canon or Nikon mount speed boosters, given the longer flange focal distance of most medium format lenses.

I'm looking into creating a DIY Pentacon Six speed booster mount currently, as P6 is one of the longest FFD mounts possible. Have posted about it in another thread, still not sure if it'll be achievable with proper back focus or not, but when my Mir 45mm f3.5 arrives I'll find out

Well, if the A6300 shapes up to be as good in practice as it is on paper, I expect a lot of people to want an FF35-to-APS-C e-mount speed booster...
