  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Southland" to be shot on RED?

i will never forget to tune in ... :)

yeah, i noticed the unique look (blow-outs can look realy good :-)

what i've seen so far ... i think all dept. have done an wonderful job
... especially in the circumstances (RED, new workarround(s), new post ... )

btw: we have to stop this discussion whether 35 mm or RED is the better way !

and i have to say i love film ... but thats an aesthetic issue.
sometimes it's an old 16mm or an MiniDV ... you name it

for this show the RED is the right decision ...

and to make a point:

why would someone shoot in IMAX-Format (more precisely some sequences)... have you seen "The Dark Knight" ? (here we go;)

is tape better then P2 or SxS or CF or ... ? (and boy was i double-minded at first ...but it went well ... )

i know, the RED workflow is not set yet ... but i think the frist years of film wasn't that clear too !?

sometimes you have to invest (time, money, patience) to become something new worked out.

Just began watching episode 5 and noticed the DP is J. Michael Muro. That name brings back memories... Street Trash was a hoot! I hope we'll see a Blu-ray release one day.

I think it is a great look for the story being told; a pseudo documentary style drama that goes behind the scenes of their daily jobs - keeps you on your toes when watching with that balance. Let's not forget the audio, there are also some very interesting creative audio choices as well - especially with phone calls..

Michael

yep... nice ... very short, though ;) it would be nice to see more of this stuff :)

not to get too much off topic here....
But, I'm actually very surprised no one has posted more BTS footage - from any project...would make for a very interesting thread indeed.

As for Southland....
I have seen almost every episode, and I'm blown away by how this looks.

Cudos to the entire team!

Anything shot on a film set must - and I mean must - be cleared in order to be publicly exhibited, and that very much includes Internet postings. This is true regardless of whether actors (who often have contractual kill rights and therefore must give their consent for any clips used for any reason) are present in the footage. Anyone who knowingly posts footage they or anyone else has shot on a show on which they work without proper clearance would likely not only lose their current job, but cost themselves future work as well.

Nice! Glad to see that video ended up making it online. The original's still sitting on my desktop. :)

Brook:
Saw 1st A.D. Derek Johannsen at the top of the clip. Worked with him for 7 years on CHARMED. He is an awesome guy and an awesome A.D. Say hi to him for me the next time you see him.

I totally see your point, and know those rules as well....I was referring to footage of the camera being prepped, re-setup, things like that. Not actual footage of scenes being shot.

i know ... thats too bad :crying:

time to write NBC ! ;-)

The same rules apply. In fact, probably more so due to the potential for embarrassment.

is/was this an set or "real location" ? (looks real to me ... space, light and so on ...)

Yep, it's a location. The only set we have for the show is the police station... which is built into a real office overlooking LA [no trans]. Everything else you've seen is a real location... 168 of 'em in season 1.

Will do!

It is true. I couldn't take BTS video and just post it without entering a real world of hurt.

That said, the more positive reactions there are to clips like this... the more likely it is that more clips will show up online. That clip was shot by a crew member on a whim for marketing. :)

so, i react totally positive ! ;-)

sorry folks ... that wasn't a meaningful statement ;-) but i have to kill some time ... while i'm waiting for motion to "render" a "RED-like-Slomo" on that Cannon XH-A1 footage

but i have to say ...watching - RED-Shows like southland inspires me/us here in old europe to try new stuff (shooting techniques, cutting styles, story telling ... an so on)

and i do not speak about stupid coppering ... that would be very lame ! for real !

just saw the last southland episode for this season :-(

btw: what an ending ! (now we have to wait till fall, i guess)

On the RED-Side nothing unexpected ;-) everyting great
sometimes i'm still wondering about some shots and how the heck you wangled this
("on the car" - inside / outside handheld camera ... )

i love the color grading... nice crushed black's ... "popping" "fresh" white's ;-) not to
saturated ... good job ! ( i don't watch(ed) out for noise ore something ...;-)
