  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony F5 and F55...

Sony has perhaps the widest and deepest sensor portfolio in the biz right now. I'm just impressed to see them use a 16bit color space in the F55 - the Sony of not that long ago would have kept that exclusive to the F65. Thanks due once again to Jim and the Red Team for changing the marketplace.

I dont think Red can take credit for the introduction of 16bit ad and recording into the F5.
Here is the history lesson :)
Sony introduced 14bit ads in 2005 with the Z1. A year later the f900R had 14 bits. 14bits came out in a prosumer cam before the flagship HDCAM camcorder due to the product cycle.

Six years later Sony introduce 16 bit ads, so given the historical time frame we were due for 16bit.
They don't seem fussed about the rollout of highest spec ADs, seems that as soon as they are ready they install them across the board....the latest broadcast camera the HDC 2500 also has a 16bit AD (as well as a 12bit output).


If you haven't guessed the engineers of Sony consumer and Sony broadcast/digital cinema are drinking budddies.

Absolutely beautiful demo -- but it'll be interesting to see how the F55 works on the battlefield.

I'll take your word on the timeline of higher bit depth A:D chips appearing in various Sony products. That said, there are numerous examples of Sony selectively offering technical advancements in some products but not others to insulate market channels. The more dynamic marketplace of the last few years has made that strategy much less tenable.

I maintain my assertion that RED's offerings/price point have impacted Sony's choices, as well as the newest cams from other manufacturers.

BTW, I have no idea who inside Sony likes to lift a glass with whom but Sony has a well earned reputation for lack of communication between divisions/groups. If they are doing better at that these days, props.

It looks very good. Is it just me or does the footage look a bit sharper on the clapboard than on his face?
