  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony A7r II - 4K internal want this!!

Interview with Kimio Maki (Senior General Manager, Digital imaging Business Group, Sony Corporation)

http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2015/06/16/sony-qa-the-must-have-sensor-tech-of-the-future

"Sony RAW is compressed, not uncompressed. But if we're getting a lot of requests for it, we should make such a kind of no-compression raw."

"And so we recognize the customer's requirement, and actually we are working on it."

Q: "Would you be able to provide uncompressed raw as a firmware update, or would it require new hardware?"

A: "Right, yes. So... not hardware."

All compression is a bad thing? I love this website . . . compresses my PDF's etc to a fraction of their original size without effecting quality. That is what elegant software enginerring and powerful algorithms are all about:

The desire for uncompressed capture on A7 series cameras stems from one particular compression artifact that occurs on still and motion frames "occassionally".

Please expand. Why not just fix the compression algo?

That would be a question for Sony. Don't know why it hasn't been addressed yet that way.

Still no word on how EV-2 to EV+17 (or whatever) translates into useable stops?

It doesn't. That was the exposure value range, not sensor's DR.
And it was for RX line, due to 1/32000 shutter capability.

14 stops would be realistic expectation.

Since a7s seams to have this issue it would be strange if sony did not fix it for this new camera.
What would be the easiest way to avoid the leaking?

Joel,

One of the great strengths of this camera line is the plethora of adapters allowing you to use almost any lens. The downside of this is many of these adapters aren't built very well and are the source of the light leak issue. I use exclusively the Novoflex adapters, and have never encountered this issue. With the a7 r ii I'll be purchasing my first "smart" adapter, hopefully metabones has it sorted by now.

Also the camera mount was beefed for the new models.

Anybody heard something about it having light leak issues?
http://youtu.be/BXFpWjggml0

The presentation claimed a new lens mount that avoids the light leak. There was a Fotodiox E mount replacement that remedied the issue on the A7 series cameras. It is a matter of the material and the amount of play on the stock mount. It is supposed to be fixed with the A7rII by beefing up the mount. Or just buy the Fotodiox mount that replaces the stock mount.

Great news if this is correct! I only heard the A7RII sends out an 8-bit 4:2:2 signal and the Shogun records in 10-bit but I think planet 5d should know better so Im hoping its true.

This means that straight out of the gate, the a7R II will be capable of bypassing its internal compression in favor of the much sturdier, 10bit ProRes and DNxHD codecs.

"While this is solid performance for a camera as small as the A7R II, Sony leaves room for users to go a little more professional by enabling uncompressed HDMI output of the sensor’s 4K signal.

This allows devices like the Atomos Shogun to capture 4K video to 10-bit ProRes or DNxHR codecs at an impressive 880Mbps, which provides a loads of benefits over the A7R II’s internal 50:1 compression."

I take a bit of chance and preordered one a while ago. I think the wobble should be ok in s35 but in fullframe it will be worse. But who knows before we se it. Its one thing on the paper and one in real life.

I wanted a camera that I can have on me every where I go. I can't stand mobile videos or the fisheye look of the gopro. But this seams to have good dynamic range and subsamples down to 4k in s35 mode.
So If the harsh compression does not kill all details It will be crisp images since it does not have an olpf filter also.

Not sure If its will be worth to get an shogun for it. I think a shogun will only record 8bit from the camera but you will get 4:2:2 in proress hq instead of h264 heavy compressed. Guess we just have to wait until its actually is out before we know.

The source for the clean 10bit hdmi output from Sony A7RII comes from this info on Atmos Pressrelease:
True video professionals need the Atomos Shogun to up the anti with 880mb/s direct to 10-bit Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR, drastically improving the quality from this amazing sensor and by-passing the cumbersome 100mb/s at 50:1 compression that is offered internally.

The 4K recording, apart from being the native codec for NLEs, is also 4:2:2 colorsamplingand 10-bit color depth that enables the freedom in post production to integrate 10-bit effects and overlays.

In this text I can't se any promise that the actual signal coming from the shogun is more than 8 bit thoe I think they should have specified that and planet5d should verify it before writing the article. Wich I hope the did.

It sends out 8 bit 4:2:2.

The statement mentions what Shogun records, not what camera sends out.

Thats Is the way I have understand it too, but with the exception of the planet5d post and photographybay. I think they should specify the incoming signal better next time.
Will be interesting to se tests with the shogun later to se if that is worth the money.

Cheers!

As matter of fact, it is rather the opposite:

E :-)

Does anyone know if the night performance is comparable to the A7s since it has this huge sensor now?

Back-Illuminated 35mm Full Frame Sensor promises to be something...

"Low light performance was the third big surprise. I wasn’t expecting great things from a camera with such a high pixel count – I was wrong. The camera acquits itself very well even at 6400 ISO."

http://www.newsshooter.com/2015/07/...sions-hands-on-with-the-surprising-4k-camera/

Still can't compare to the awesome things the A7S can do in low light.. plus the rolling shutter is kinda bad, wonder what this 5 axis stabilization is doing..
