  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony A7r II - 4K internal want this!!

Patrick, if it had 17 stops of DR that would write in big letters on the main product page and be clearly stated in product's PR.

:)

240 at roughly 1080, higher speed gets lower resolution readout.

Yeah I read that now, so it is upressed to 1080 in camera? still looks pretty cool for the price.

Hehe, true... 17 is a bit high. On the other hand DXO measured a DR of 14.1 stops for the A7R and i don't think the Mark II will be worse here.

That cam looks really interesting, so many things done right, bravo Sony. I'm tempted to switch from Canon, for stills. Originally planned to get the 5DsR, but the A7RII has more to offer and that Canon sensor isn't that great, when you look behind the resolution. Even the AF with Canon-lenses seems to be usable now with the A7RII. Thats one of the hidden killer-features. ;)

Canon has to do something.

What are the rumoured specs of the 5Dmk4? I just assumed it'd be internal 4k ("5Dmark4k" has a nice ring to it)... But then again, if it's priced like the 1Dc/C-series, Canon can forget it.

Not much... Some rumours speak about two versions of the MK4, one for video-shooters and one for stills. 4k has been mentioned, increased DR too. 28mp sensors are being tested and some speak about another 18mp-sensor (which would make sense if they try to copy the A7S for their second version of the MK4). Canon is also developing a new Flash-System, which they want to introduce together with the Mark 4. Latest rumours speak about a release in early 2016 with a announcement in 2015.

Thats pretty much everything.

Canon should know by now there is no way around 4k-video. They no longer can't ignore what Sony and others are doing.

I'm tempted to sell both my 5D2 and C100 and get this camera. I just love the look from Canon's sensors though. I had a Sony Alpha when they first came out and eventually switched to Canon. Hmm. Decisions decisions.

I'd say it will stay 14 with usable ISO 3200.

I'd say that purely spec-wise Sony just announced three kings of each segment and Canon can "whistle to the wind" for that matter (local phrasing literally translated). Color science and tastes excluded.

On the other hand, that recording button is still in the wrong place, body size is still fiddly, and 3" screen is still ridiculous for video work. Somehow someone assumed that pro users want tiny pro cameras and prefer to fiddle and squint on a job. So you have an ultra spec photo/video camera with screen almost half as small as a consumer smartphone. So a mom can film her daughter's dance act with better framing potential than a professional shelling out $3200 and doing this for a living, unless going Lego style.
Which is cool for a mom and her daughter but for folks working with this, logic is out for lunch.

Btw, looks like that uncompresssed RAW for stills is being considered and after the online drama and spotlight on Sony it is reasonable to assume it is on the way. This type of blunder for a flagship with this level of performance would really be ridiculous.

A7 is more of a bridge/wide functionality/market gap filling camera and full DSLR ergonomics and functionality still rules particular professional usages because it is optimized for them, so Nikon and Canon still have a large market segments left. Samsung just got a slap for NX1 and the only thing it is superior in now is the 80 Mb/s H.265 codec.

Now about that 100 Mb/s 4K nonsense. This is back to 24Mb/s 1080p quality level (sort of).
Please raise it or go with h.265 Sony. Or both.

All things considered, I don't recall the photo/video product introduction of this magnitude.
Looks like Sony went: "World, now check this out". Bam/bam/bam.

Have recently tested the A7II with the 5 axis stabilization. Bottom line is if you are trying to hold camera steady for a still - the stabilization is great. Move a little and the footage is steppy if video is what you want. We had the Dragon with us with a Leica R 35mm on it - by comparison - the Dragon is a dream. The rich beautiful color and no motion artifacts at all. The Dragon with a side handle battery and a remote follow focus remains the one to beat. Now I realize different league etc... I feel like Sony endeavor to move a lot of kit with people believing this is going to work way better than advertised. In my view - it don't. And putting that same 5 axis to deal with 4k in the the upcoming unit - I am leery of it. GH4 is visually unpleasant but by using a small sensor they can get a slightly smoother shot. Prob across board is processors struggling to handle the data. With the 3500 (ish) price tag go find a fire sale Scarlet spend a little more and be way happier in my opinion.

Pat,

I don't have any files to share right now. And to be clear the A7II is 1920HD not 4K. The new A7R II will have internal 4K.
That said. I am out on a shoot with Dragon and an A7S and A7II in tow and will shoot some footage with it as a compare.
On a sunnier pro A7II note though - I tried out the new Sony 16-35 FF with OSS on it. And it was much improved.
Where it seemed to disappoint most was when you put Leica or similar 'dumb' glass on it - which reduces your IS to 3 axis that it felt too steppy.

Seems to check the boxes in the top 5% of Class for:
1. 4K Internal
2. High ISO
3. High Rez Stills
4. Image Stabilization
5. Size / Weight
6. High DR
7. Cost / Value
8. Auto Focus
You don't have to be the best at anything one thing to be the best overall travel / adventure / landscape / scuba / action / drone / event / gimbal / time lapse / stealth doc camera.

Higher resolving family of lenses to follow. I have the A7s and love it for star photography. It has night vision.

For me, the best camera for the job is the one I can carry ;-)

It is any info on the dynamic range? As long as it same as a7s im ok with it.

Good points. I really miss a smaller camera that i can always carry with me. Also i wish to have an option to use it as a B-camera for the epic on gimballs. Im very interested on seing a autofocus in action. Is there a batterygrip that can extend the battery life on it?

I have this one. Downside is that it takes a pair of the weakass Sony batteries . . . not Eneloop AA's

The AF on the current A7II is excellent in continuous mode for video. Handled reasonably it will go where you point it in a nice easy way and you can click a button to cross check your peaking as you go. The DR is equal to A7S - and the extra stills power is great. The A7RII will be a little monster on a gimbal - and based on what I have found with the 16-35 FF OSS lens maybe be reasonably stable just bare and naked. I have not found the battery thing to be too crazy. I mean compared to a redvolt you get a lot more shoot time.

Just looked ... and a Gold Mount plate as well ... and a E Mount to PL Mount Adapter ...Wowzers! Who knew??

You can adapt the Sony E Mount to just about any lens mount ever made. PL, Panavision, Canon, Nikon, Mamiya, Hasselblad, etc. It really is a great system.

I have mounts for "E - Everything" . . . why let a body brand dictate your lens choice? So many great FF lenses out there from Nikon, Leica, Canon and Zeiss. Leica 50mm F.95 at ISO 52K . . . puts the Milk in Milky-way :-)
