  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony A6300 announced!! 4K internal! S-log3!! 1080 120fps! 4K for the masses :-P ;-)

We get a lot of people around here poo pooing cameras because they do cinema when they might be perfectly suitable for straight to bluray, DVD or even digital TV, the bulk of the market.

So is this camera suitable for any of the TV uses?

Has anyone tried the Metabones with the new firmware that supposedly should make AF faster? Just got a Sony A7S II and a buddy of mine ordered the way cheaper Vello adapter with no electronics to get us started with our Zeiss CP2's... considering the Metabones to support my other Canon lenses for AF.

Hi Andrae: I tried looking for the right Vello adapter for my CP lenses to Sony and got confused with the different models. Which adapter is your friend using? Any complaints?

Thx

I Have the Metabones mark IV with the A7S (I), it's very very slow, or unusuable for me.

Hi Chris, I like using mine. Regarding video it has horrible rolling shutter. But put it on a gimbal and you should be fine. I've mostly used mine for shooting photos of sports and Behind the scenes video on a gimbal. I've never used it with an external monitor though. But I never imagined buying one to replace gear but instead just be a complimentary camera when I just want to carry something small.

Thinking about picking one of these bad boys up...not a lot of feedback from RU's who own one yet...lots of stuff online though, but I value RU's opinions more than anyone else's. RU's happy with this camera?

Quick review on A6300 after shooting on a music video with 2 FS7, 1 A7RII, and A6300.

Positive reaction---

1. It's quite match well with other camera to A7RII, and FS7 (I usually shoot on Slog2 with my fs7, so matching between cameras weren't difficult)
- I personally own FS7 and A7RII and I find myself a bit wasted my money after I've used a6300. It's because all the highend jobs, I mostly bring my Red not the FS7. (Of course FS7 is renting almost everyday, people love it.)
2. Image quality is great for what you paid for.
6k to 4k down conversion? I don't know whether this is true or not, but certainly it's sharp enough to use it as C-cam for your needs.
3. Sensitivity is not bad.
- I have shot on iso 1600-2000, but the noise aren't as bad as I expected, again Sony sensor nailed the sensitivity
4. 24mpx still photography? it's great! if you had a6000, you know what you will get. A6300 is exactly the one you've really wanted if you felt a bit off having a6000.
5. Super compact. It means you can bring three of these camera while you can bring one Red camera. In the documentary situation it is quite useful. - Even comparing A7rii, It's super small.

Negative reaction---

1. I hate sony's battery solution.

2. Some argues that there is over heating issue( But again, I do not use a6300 as my main camera, so I wouldn't shoot more than 10-20min with this small camera, so it doesn't bother me.)

3. 8 bit really suffers if you shoot in slog3 (A7SII is 8 bit as well, and I see many production used it, and no problem what's so over)

4. You need to invest on adapters (No one uses stupid e mount lens, everyone buys speed booster or, pl mount adapter)
- Note: Manual focusing on E mount lenses are really painful.

5. TOO SMALL FOR MY NEEDS
- When I put the cp.2 on the camera, I couldn't simply put the camera on the tripod, because the camera is way too small. It means you might need rig, again it means your camera gets bigger and heavier, which against the great thing about this camera.

AT THE END

I LOVE THIS CAMERA. I am going to shoot a super indie feature film end of this year, and we will shoot with single red camera and two of these small cameras for any kind of milticam OTS dialog shots to save some times. I really don't mind using this camera on the indie/ poor TV Pilot.

I remembered myself that I used to shoot local commercial with FS700, or FS100. People loved the quality from there - Again, it's so funny thinking of shooting on AVCHD(No slog2) 1080p quality hahaha comparing to This nice XAVC-S 100mbs with slog2
People constantly trying to get the best camera, but I feel like we are facing to certain quality limitation where people actually might not mind what camera we are using as long as the result is great.

I really hope this finds you well.

Thanks guys! Yea, more looking to use it as stealth mode when that's called for as well as some low-light use. I'm well-aware of the RS that plagues this camera though...which is why I'd prob pick up a Z-finder or something similar to help with support.

Thanks again!

Autofocus in still mode is okay with adapters ? I will take the Sony E 16-50 mm and 55-210mm for just 200 euros more in the bundle kit. It can be useful for Run and Gun on exterior.

And what do you think about the colors ? I'm very afraid about the sony color science, I hate the skin tone on my A7S, I think it's the same with the A6300 but hope there is some little improvement.

People say it's not as good as 5DMK3 or Nikon d800,D4/D5 but i think it's as good as D80, D3/D3X (Older nikon camera) if you use Sigma adapter with sigma art lenses. (I both tried with A6300 and a7rii with sigma art lenses)

It's a shocking improvement to me.

I just received my A6300,

Quick test :

- Autofocus in video mode is interesting
- I can't distinguish the image quality of the A7S and the A6300
- Rolling shutter is horrific

I agree with Malik.
RS is indeed horrific. Also, I was not impressed by the image at all. Focus peaking seemed to do a decent job, though. Overall, not worth the $1k

Color response has been taken care off, solution can be found by investigating the link in my signature.

Rolling shutter is what you get for $1000 in a large sensor ultra-compact 6K to 4K real time scaling, primarily stills camera, and higher expectations are at this point unrealistic. This already is a technological achievement.

S-Log is not designed for 8 bit compressed material and works when you don't have gradients in upper luminosity range, because log curve compresses that range significantly.
