  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

Let's put it this way, $5,000 to get my Red one going with 3 SSD cards for this would be more palatable if I knew the following:
-If Epic wasn't going to ship until 2011. I'm wary to dump $5k into something other than getting Epic if it's about to ship in Oct or Nov.
-If I knew that 64gb SSD were fast enough to enable use of all datarates on Epic, then I could think of that as investment towards my epic and a shared storage pool. Or I roll my Red back to CF and push all my stock of SSD towards my Epic.

The title of this thread says 'something new for Red One'. it doesn't say they are phasing out CF on Epic, only that they've already fitted epic with SSD side modules. I would image you can still use CF on Epic unless you opt for the SSD module on purchase.

With the limited funds I have, I'll stick with CF and hopefully if I want to shoot higher frame rates at 5K then Im guessing I can plug in my existing Red Drive.

Wow .. Wasn't expecting that high
Just a general question... Why RED media always 3X expensive compared to third party SSD?

Any sources for a 33% of the announced RED price for as fast 1.8" SSD's ?

RED Download Stations

RED Download Stations

So, I've ben lucky enough to have been using the new RED Download stations and they are incredibly fast.

I'm reading from RED 16GB CF Cards and writing to a Maxx Digital Evo 4k using R3DDM. The readers have been extremely reliable and trouble free. They are so fast that I've been "ruined" in a way. The other day when there was a company move and the equipment was stuck in another location, I used a lexar Fw800 reader and really felt it. Seriously, I used to think that the Lexar FW800 reader was great (and it was), but there is a new player in town.

I've got a 4 port card from Maxx Digital (it's the same one that Lacie sells) and it performs extremely well on both Leopard and Snow Leopard. I'm talking with Atto to see why the H380 with fanout cable seems to slow down (as in with any esata device, not a RED specific issue).

I can't wait to use the new 1.8 RED Mag Download station because the download speeds will be even faster.

* a note about the pictures, I get similar speeds without the 6th USB RED station, I wouldn't recommend USB for downloading, save that for Mice and Keyboards :) Also of note, the finder copy was just for a screen shot, I always use R3DDM to download media.

It would be great to know info like this.

Same conundrum as the MX announcement. Something new - for a camera I am trading in....when? (I'm Stage 3). Not sure if I want to drop 5K on something I'll be trading in (hopefully) soon.

Makes for interesting business planning.

On the brighter side - this is a great advancement!

awesome to hear, thanks for sharing Steve! good to know on the 4 Port card

So, Deanan-For offloading footage from the SSDs in the field, all we would need is the $250 module and a fw800 attached to a computer, right? Just making sure. This sounds much better than lugging a RED Base Station into the field.

The RED SSD media you buy for R1 will be compatible with Epic so you are essentially buying it for both R1 and Epic except on Epic you'll be able run at ~3-4x faster.

The 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB media all record at the same datarates.

Also, I apologize if I missed this, but these are 1.8" SSD's and modules. Are there actually going to be 2.5" models as the store says or are these replacing them?

Thanks Deanan. Are you saying that the 1.8" SSD will be capable of recording all datarates that EpicX will offer? I'd hate to get half way through this only to discover that what my EpicX really needs for all datarates is a 2.5" SSD or something else

Very cool Deanan,

will these support the 2.5:1 compression? or will that be a future module and media?

Yes, I've done that many times already.

Sean, Dylan,

If you have a business model that will pay for at least part of the initial investment, then buy it. When you have to turn in your R1, take the SSD module off, and I am sure there will be more than enough buyers for a reasonable discount on here.

Just an idea. YMMV.
