  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Something New....

btw - all you epic folk... I look forward to buying up your CF cards in the marketplace ;-)

Heheh, me too. They're amazing cards to use in your DSLR, too (for stills, of course...). Then again, let's see how long we want to hang on to a regular still camera, with Epic being a DSMC... Red Team? Time to get rid of that old system? :)

One point on pricing (especially as it relates to US citizens) is that the US dollar is emulating a Stuka dive bomber right now in comparison to currencies like the Yen.

As I type this the JPY/USD ratio is at 83.94 yen to the dollar.

Given that Red's manufacturing is probably largely Asia based (not necessarily Japan, but I'm based here so that's my point of reference for argument's sake) they are having to either absorb that disparity or pass it on in the form of price increases on various components.

So that will account for around a 15-20% increase in apparent pricing as seen domestically in the US, even though looking at it from Tokyo the whole Red package is getting cheaper for me every day!

Just wanted to add a bit of international perspective to the prices as food for thought.

Cheers,

Paul

Had it not been for my early adoption of the RED ONE, there is no doubt EPIC would have been beyond my means.

Good summary right here.

The new technology is great, and I'm all for tricking out my new EPIC-X with as many bells and whistles as I can afford. My issue is that I don't want to spend another $3000 on my current RED ONE, which will become my 2nd cam and won't see the same action. I'm pretty happy with my current mix of CF and drives for my RED ONE and would just like the cards, at least, to continue to be supported.

I'm concerned that, if 16gb cards are EOL'd, just like the RED Drives seem to be gone forever, that SSD becomes a forced upgrade, due to the obsolescence and scarcity of media. Please don't let that happen. I just want to be able to replace the old ones when it becomes necessary.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this - a lot of Stage 2 upgrades will be faced with maintenance on 2 cameras, not just being able to afford the new one.

This new REDMAG seems like the perfect balance between Compact Flash form factor and REDRAID capacity. You may be right Jeff. CF may be a thing of the past unless capacity increases. Otherwise, the only thing going for it is compact size.

I have always hated CF, I can't figure why they are so popular, maybe its just my cards, but, I can only shoot in Redcode 28 and limited speeds and resolutions with CF. The SSD is one of the main reasons I want the Epic it is both compact and super fast. Bring on the 100FPS 5K.

One other thing you'll need to factor in to the final cost of going with SSD media is the cost of upgrading your laptop etc with SSDs as well, if you want to get the maximum offload speeds touted here of 150-200MB/s. And they'll have to be bigger SSDs too (like 512GB) if you plan on shooting more than 256GB per day. Double all that for stereoscopic camera backups...

Either that or larger RAID0/1/5 (etc) arrays which can take advantage of the high throughput.

I foresee a lot of 4x 1TB 2.5" laptop drive arrays in the near future for professional Data Wranglers who want portability and secure backups without breaking the bank on large SSDs....

Cheers,

Paul

It will need the REDstation.

What about a firewire or USB on the camera body that reads the SSD? This would be good for travel or other really light weight set ups. Just plug the camera into the laptop.

That is to say, have the slot portion be switchable between CF and SSD slots without needing to build/buy all the parts and shell around it?

How about an adapter?
As big as an SSD card but with a small slot for a CF card. That way, you can use SSD or CF in the same slot... that should be possible no?

The most important (!) question to ask in relation to the new module is whether or not it will still say Mysterium-X on the side of the new module? ;-)

My thoughts exactly. Epic is looking like a $40,000 camera investment, once it's all said and done. And we know it's never all done or said. Much to consider for those of us on a budget. Did I just say budget? :smilielol5:

Still WAY cheaper than Alexa (less than 1/2 price)... and what sounds like 10x the features. This is why there is Scarlet for personal owners, one can always rent the EPIC, if they dont feel they will recpup their investment.

Be smart people, if you dont think you can recoup the investment, then by all means, RENT DONT BUY!

@ Steve Freebairn, we also LOVE 16Gb cards, for the sheer ease of media management offloading and back up seems to much easier to manage than the hours and hours of footage we shot on RED DRIVES last week.

@ jarred, deanan, et al, this is awesome, love all the different flavors of drives, but especially the faster offload speeds... well done RED TEAM!

Hehe.. I wonder if the new status symbol for R1 owners will be to have the giant "RED 1.8" SSD" on the side of their cameras, as it is shown in the pictures here? The camera shows itself to be MX when you turn it on.

64GB is the perfect reel size. Over 11 minutes at RC80!! You would still get 3:30min at 2.5:1 lossless.
Though you'd probably break out the 256GB for lossless, and get over 14 minutes!

And for underwater, heli, etc, the 256GB give you twice the capacity of the RED RAM for less $. And they are smaller and built into the camera... good stuff, no, great stuff!

RIP CF. This is great.

These are Custom RED SSDs. Off-the-Shelf SSD's do not have a high enough wear rate on their connectors.

You will need the RED STATION to read them, and like Deanan mentioned, they are wicked fast.. as our Media always is :)

64GB SSD $950.
128GB SSD $1800
256GB SSD $3200

R1 SSD Camera Module $1500
EPIC SSD Camera Module $2500

WHy are people bitching about price? When the performance gains alone should pay for the upgrade (less hours for DIT to be offloading) do the math.

16GB vs SSD MATH
64GB SSD $950. = (4 x 16GB @ $300 = $1200) SAVINGS of $250
128GB SSD $1800 = (8x 16GB @ $300 = $2400 = SAVINGS of $600
256GB SSD $3200 = (16x 16GB @ $300 = $4800 = SAVINGS of $1600

So capacity for capacity, it IS cheaper than 16GB CF Cards... and that does NOT include the $ saved on the DIT's reduced overtime.

spent almost 3 hours offloading a RED drive using R3D data manager, off the fw800. We were getting kicked off location too and I stood my ground until the backups were done. Faster offloading time is essential.

It's not without a good reason that RED announced SSD 1.8" module just two days before IBC starts in Amsterdam.

Something is huge going on behind RED curtain.

Could be something that I wrote here.

If this option could happen that means your RED1-MX can serve you in the next 5 years very fine in any comparison with the competition.

The RED ONE Empire Strikes Back.

The SSD pricing seems fair to me for what is being delivered. The setup for me is $8900 less whatever discount I get for upgrading the CF module on the Epic X. That's not cheap, but quality storage never is, and I'm getting 5K@120fps lossless RAW recording that I can hold in the palm of my hand!!! It's amazing how quickly we get jaded. Epic is amazing!

I'm very happy with the announced size, weight, capacities and transfer speeds (yeah!) for the SSD modules, and the cost is acceptable. Well done, RED. :cheers2:

I have no interest in using CF cards with Epic; that's like putting a Yugo engine in a Ferrari.
