  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Social Network...

Reading previous posts and comments from BSC test I realised that camera end to end performance have to have “end to end” redefined.

Up to now I was thinking that one end starts on lenses and the other end is the final projection in the cinema.

Very useful comments by Nail and David here:

I think I have to expand end to end to include scene lighting on the front end and proliferation of post processing knowledge on the final end.

If average DP and post house can’t process digital material optimally for this type of technology the most results out there will not be good.
So learning curve and education is as important in the digital cinema revolution days as the progress of technology itself.

But on the second thought, people that can use the competitive advantage of the new technology for its own success usually outrun the competition:-)

Arri will really regret not going 4k+ in the next year or so, as theaters gear up for 3D and 4k projection, the Alexa's appeal will drop for cinema use (should still be popular with tv though).

From my interpretation of /Film and Reuters, it seems that The Social Network won't be the first film to be screened in 4K, but rather the first film to be projected around the world in 4K due to the growing installation base of 4K projectors.

That said, I'm very uninformed, so let me know if some other film had wide-release 4K projection.

Hancock did, although as you point out, there were not a whole lot of 4K venues last year.

It is the first feature film shot AND released (wide) at 4K.

Once could argue that 35mm film has 4K resolution, but that's a different matter. In any case, I don't think there's been a wide distribution on 4K digital projectors.

This speaks to a question that I have for Jim. You are coming from a business history that is dominated by a rather high end brand. Where does the drive behind Scarlet come from? Are you simply creatng a product for an under served market, or is there a more personal reason for introducing photo quality to the mass video market at the prices you propose?

Wow, it's so cool that we common folk will get to work with these incredible chips...
Nice to hear a quote like this

I wanted to build a professional camera at the highest level... and a camera for the aspiring professional that he/she could afford.
