  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Snowboarding & Skatebaording Short

for most of the individual shots i think it was great, but my point was about continuity and the overall thing. in a short trailer, it may be acceptable - but imagine 45 minutes or more of just slow motion. true, there will be some interesting shots, but it makes more mundane scenes plain tiresome. i counted, and there's a total of 10 shots which are not slow-motion, two of which are timelapses at the beginning and end (which by the way are particularly effective, namely because they are limited and open and close the film). but that may account for something like 1% of it at normal speed. in my personal preference, that's distracting and a bit overdone. i don't need to see every kickflip and 360 flip and nosestall in slow motion. some of these shots were great, and really needed to be in slow motion, and i was so glad that they were. others, not so much. seeing something in slow motion puts emphasis and attention on movement, much like italics or boldface type. however, when you write an entire essay in italics or bold, it does not hold the same effect. it becomes the norm, blends together, and it's not so special anymore. slow motion is a powerful and effective technique, but it can be overused to the point where it becomes either redundant or simply uninteresting, except on a shot-by-shot basis. personally, i would recommend reserving it for the more epic sequences to place emphasis.

i say all this to be constructive. i'm not bashing on this work, because i do like it overall. i simply think it has potential to be more effective and stunning in some areas. i'm not saying you must redo the entire thing, but i think it's something good to keep in mind as you continue to produce excellent work. just my own taste - and i like pepperoni pizza. all that extra stuff gets in the way of tasting the pizza.

Grades

Grades

You should try to use at least a 90º shutter when filming the Skateboarding, and almost all of the Skateboarding looks washed out. It would look Phenomenal with a little contrast. The mountains behind the Skatepark are gorgeous/ but its hard to tell because of the low contrast, contrast will also help make it look 10x sharper.

BTW the Snowboarding looks fantastic, Lots of Contrast and details.

Hey Alex/ Paul

I like my grades to be subtle and not over do it unless the director is really going for a pushed look. On the day for the mountain shoot I used my secret double polarizer combo to act as a fluctuating ND and aided to a the pronounced clouds and sky. For the skate footy we didn't have ND or polas as the lens was too wide and clipped on my 14mm with the 4x4 filters.

So the snowboard stuff came out more contrasty. I have another grade with some more pushed images and tried some washed color/ duo tone with vignettes, they all have a purpose just depends on what is wanted. All of the edit was graded in COLOR and loved the FCP roundtrip workflow.

It's funny I got into cinematography by filming skate / snowboard stuff when I was a teen 10 years ago and have just gotten back into it after shoot dramas for the last 8. It's nice to come back to it with a more cinematic approach, and a more controlled look when shooting for what you need/ want in the editor.

As for Paul's suggestion. I find it a yes and a no. As for this edit I really only wanted bangers for it and was going for the slow-mo look/ feel. I only wish I had more really good shots. I had some more filler but didn't find it worthy of the final cut. As for most of the shots I find the slow mo-runs too much before and after the tricks and it's not the trick themselves that bother me for the edit. I wanted the piece to to run the length of the track and didn't want to comprise that. But I guess editing like cinematography is always a beautiful comprise in some measure. Or at-least as my experiences have taught me.

Best Pictures to all

Nice edit my friend. nice to know there is another red just over the wheat fields.

I also have the red primes as well if you ever need for a project or shoot and could work out a reasonable price.

Thanks Aaron, funny what you can end up with you go out just for fun!

Thanks for the offer on the RPP, and the rentals. Let's chat as I do have a few projects coming up. We normally use Zeiss Master Primes, or Zeiss Super Speeds. But I would like to see first hand what the RPP can do. I have family in Okotoks, and we visit often. On the flip side, let me know if you ever need any post services, would be glad to help out.

cheers

i hear ya man, great work.

the slo-mo does work perfectly with the music in the edit, i think maybe what gets me more is the extra time in some shots... but you're right, sometimes you just have to make some choices in editing - and it's probably better to use the higher quality footage and just let it run a bit extra than adding in filler...

again, great work - i really love some of the snow shots you got.

peace.
