Hello,

I am planning to do a skateboarding video. Back in the day everything was shot with fisheye lenses. Not sure if anybody on here is doing skateboard video's.

But I am about to get a new lens, but not sure which one. Still wondering if I should get a really wide lens without distortion or a fisheye lens. I dont mind the distortion, I quite like it as it adds flavour to the visual imagery. (however I could re-use a wide lens in more occasions like Immo etc).
I am shooting with a ursa mini pro atm, and there are a lot of options out there. Does anybody have a recommendation on a awesome fisheye lens (EF,FD, C/Y, leica-r mount) ?

Thanks!

Cheers

If you want my opinion, fisheye lenses are affectations which belong in 1993. To be blunt, they suck. You can still use them and correct the distortion afterwards, though.

There is room to be unique in this specific genre. If not unique, then at least engaging and dynamic. E.g. if there isn't an IMAX skateboarding film, then maybe you could make one.

I'd say - both. They are too different in the image they output. I do love Fish Eye a lot for action sports - it can often produce a unique perspective, which doesn't exist in the real world at all. While rectilinear wides can produce a rather clean image, they are pretty boring when used on static shots. Fish Eye is not the best choice for moving shots on the other hand.

Main Question

Main Question

Are you making a Skateboarding piece for Skateboarders, or for the general public.
For Skateboarders-Fish eye
For General Public- Wide angle

Thanks, What are the best fisheye lenses out there?

People are just starting to get into the zero-d wide angles in skating and bmx. As someone who has been watching and shooting those videos for years, fisheye wins it for me. To me, it's extremely satisfying watching a well executed fisheye follow film line.

In our upcoming feature Radius we use mainly a G.L Optics 12mm @8K and a Arri Ultra Prime 8mm @5-6K for all wideangle skateboarding shots.
