Significant Update...

(snip) DSMC Side Handle not that far short of doubled in price: from $950 up by $800 to $1750. Can I be cheeky enough to ask what's happened there? Is there some huge new enhancement to it that we don't know about yet?

My guess is that it turned out to be more expensive to make than initial forecasts.

Not sure what more it could do, other than I'd love to be able to mount it as a handle on a hand held rig.

Cheers - #19

Will a non-RED One owner (Stage Last) such as myself be able to take advantage of these 2011 prices as well? I'm saving my pennies and attended the remote REDucation in NYC--just waiting for my turn to make a deposit! (:

Ok now I'm excited!
Given that the turn around time is less than a week on the Ms, I guess we can look for the Xs to roll out at a similar pace once balance is paid up.

Providing that they have opened up Stage 4 before 31st Dec 2011, then yes.

Uli posted this:

Since we can't place orders yet for stages beyond 2: will all stages be able to do so before the end of the year?

Jim's response was this:

Of course.

So this tells me that Stage 4 will be open before 31st Dec 2011, therefore, yes, Stage 4 can take advantage of these prices provided you order and pay your deposit before 31st Dec 2011

Steve

That's if all the other stages are fulfilled first. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

Significant Update... and a significant increase in price for some things. It was kind of expected anyway. Just wish there was a significant update on the release of Scarlet. Anyway still great news.

I too am worried that a price increase is going to put me (and possibly most of would be buyers) out of the EPIC-S train.

I can afford around 12 K, around 17 K I cannot.

17K is the RED One crowd. I though the EPIC-S was geared at the upper AF100 crowd.

Hopefully there will also be a window to get one at a lower price.

I stand by my statement that $35k is still a great price for all that Epic-X does, a better price/performance than any of the competition.

But I'm having trouble wrapping my head around a Side Handle that costs as much as double what Nikon or Canon needs to charge for a Side Handle with a camera attached.

At least the same can't be said of the battery and battery charger (as was the case with Red One)...

Thanks, Steve. I'd thought that Stage 4 was open to all, but when I went back and re-read Jarred's stage clarification post it states that Stage 4 will be "Available to RED ONE camera owners"; my heart sank a bit.

Negative, RED announced the drives will NOT be supported at all, as of April:

Thanks for that link, Mike.
I'm not going to shoot the messenger (especially after reading your interesting comments on that thread), but...

DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!!!!!!

That is such a massive shame.

The 256GB SSD cards are how much???

Hang on... I just read this later in the thread...

Hurrah!!!! That's better news. How much is this module?

What? I thought Stage 4 was open to all. Here is the exact quote from the Clarification post:

STAGE 4: Purchase EPIC S35 Brain

Available to RED ONE camera owners that were invoiced by RED or completed the official RED ownership transfer process after May 22, 2010 ( as well as all non-RED ONE owners)
Cost is $28,000 for 1x S35 MYSTERIUM-X brain with PL mount.
Will begin shipping once all Stage 3.5 orders have been notified they are ready for delivery. You must take delivery within 30 days from notification that your order is ready for delivery . Notifications go back to the order of date/time order placed.

Check the date, Anthony: that was in 2009. That's Jarred in 2009 announcing the module... which he cancelled in April 2011. Sorry.

I still think they should make the module myself. It can't be that hugely complex, and it would allow people the option, if they so wanted. If RED don't change their minds and make it, I hope a 3rd party outfit steps up to the plate with a module that had similar functionality.

THANK YOU JIM FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT! Eagerly waiting to hear specifics on stage 3 package. Once again thank you for the Titanium PL mount, that was an amazing upgrade!

Keyboard!

I thought it, you were brave enough to say it :D

Actually that side handle pricing is a bit of a bummer... Jim, Jarred, help us a little here. Couldn't you make a dumb one? Identical ergonomics, same lump of alloy, but minus all the smarts? Just the battery compartment and the record button, ditch all the other controls and LCD etc. and make it for a couple of hundred bucks?

Does this motion have a second? I really wanted one for certain types of shooting, but at $1750 it looks a little silly.

*edit for clarification: if you don't, I'll still order the original - at $950, before the end of the year! But I think you should make the 'dumb grip' version, and if you do I'll buy that instead*

Mike, I'm wondering if some of this (no drive module, no dumb side handle, etc) is just to allow some room for 3rd Party manufacturers to make some accessories?
