  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

shut up and shoot that Scarlet

Canon 24mm CNE.
On the final video I used Red Giant Denoiser II and it cleaned up the noise really nicely! This is lit with 2 Kino flos, in like 3 minutes. As soon as I got there the guy had to go, but I'm really happy with the image still.

I get asked by some peeps here if I am upgrading my camera, my 1,750 hours of operation Scarlet MX. Frankly, I can't afford it, but I always remind myself that its a sensor in a box, and an amazing sensor at that...

Same here brother.

Your work is inspiring :)

This was shot mostly in 3K at 48fps.

Used an F&V Ring Light and a 1x1 LED.

Most of it was env lighting and I had to fix the strobe effect in edit using a technique I found in Phillip Bloom's site.

Beautiful images!

I think it's a bit ironic that most of the people around here that I've worked with who own Red cameras and know what they're doing have Scarlet-X cameras. ;)

Every so often Ill venture over to the RED store and see whats up.

Im too deep into my Scarlets Eco to move up.

Its nice to know that I can upgrade mine (10K option) but the overalll cost is just too much.

One day maybe but for now, my girl has been doing it all for me :)

Recently I went from pre-ordering a Raven, to a Scarlet-W and then simply to buying a used Scarlet X because I was impatient and didn't want to wait till spring. Considering just how nice the image is on MX and how cheap the entire package came out to being... I'm wondering if I'll actually end up upgrading to Dragon any time soon. What made me finally jump on the RED bandwagon was shooting my friend's Scarlet-W. It's a beutiful camera with some pretty obvious advantages over any MX camera let alone the Scarlet. Once I got rolling with my Leica R's and S4i's, I was really just as pleased and blown away as I was on the Scarlet-W.

Outside of high fps / slow mo, extra resolution and the extra goodies that come along with shooting on a newer camera, I've got to say that your standard "24p" cinema footage with good glass looks so outstanding that it becomes kind of hard to justify upgrading just yet. Either way, I ddin't expect to be this pleased with an old beat up Scarlet MX. It's been about 5 years or so, but this camera really feels like it has a lot of life in it still.

The Scarlet at the bottom end makes you work harder for the images you want. I think a lot of Scarlet owners, like myself, have grown into making their images more and more beautiful. Rather than jumping to the next big thing, it's to make more from the thing you have. The learning curve always become more when you know more about where you are.

Still learning

Just having her in your hands and shooting at your own pace/mood is a great experience.

I picked up a GH4 for stills and now all the experiences from my Scarlet trickles down to the Panny.

If I needed high frame rates or drone shots then rent, beg, borrow or steal :)

Great post, .. and so true. Regardless of the camera we use we should always be learning.

I'm in a bit of a tough place with my Scarlet-x.

See I bought it used w very little time, like new really. Shot with it, learned the Red system, and actually
got some work that I'm very proud of. A short I shot with it has beautiful skin tones.
It really tought me about exposing the sensor, controlling noise, color etc.

But I did get the Epic-W 8k Helium. That camera is on an entire different level.
But I'm having a hard time accepting the fact I do need to sell the Scarlet.
I need to move those funds over into glass but honestly hard to let go of something
that produces such beautiful images.

Scarlet-x is an awesome camera

Damn man, let it go. That sensor and tech is a new beast beyond the Scarlet. If I could I would. So you should! And post results.

Sell the Scarlet and let someone else enjoy her ;)

As nice as some of the upgrades are, IMO Mysterium-X still has a place in cinema, even though it's not as forgiving as a Dragon or Helium.

That is one of the benefits though. I had to get used to working with a rather limited dynamic range and with harsh highlight clipping when shooting on a Cion, but the results were quite beautiful. Now that I have a Red, I'm still getting beautiful results, it's just easier... but for narrative work, I haven't changed much about how I go about lighting. And I don't plan to, other than learning new techniques to sculpt and control light.
