  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

shut up and shoot that Scarlet

Thanks all :)

The main 'dancing' part was shot 3K wide screen 60fps on the lowest compression setting - maybe 8:1? Not too sure. The strobe stuff was shot 4K WS 36fps - with the strobe 60fps was just too slow. The singing was 4K 23.976fps.

This is great. I get people saying to me, "so a Scarlet can't do any over cranking right?" Uh...I shoot some cooking @3kWS 60 fps all the time, and you know what, it looks pretty good.

This was shot on my Scarlet Dragon w/ Nikon 14-24mm 2.8@21mm, wide open, 4K-24fps Iso250. I used this shot to play with some compositing techniques. Graded in AECC14 with some Magic Bullet help. The sky was replaced but Prometheus was really there re-fueling to my surprise.

Nice juxtaposition on the two videos, a very natural look and a very stylised. Both look great.

My deliverables are only ever 1080p, so I'm more than comforatble shooting 3K 48 and 60fps where appropriate. I would like the frame rates of the Scarlet Dragon mind you....

I have to say "me too" my friend....

My Instagram is composed of like 80% Scarlet (MX) framegrabs, usually testing different stuff (LUTs or exposure tricks or lighting, etc)... Maybe I should post some here...

Love the feel of it.

If Im allowed to critique why is the smoke/haze blue at last few frames before fade out?

Eric, it's https://instagram.com/mikepdot/... In the future I'll try to post some stuff here, but honestly, its mostly just me foolin' around in RCXp (like not finished/real colour grade by any means).

Thanks I have the same prob just no time.

I have two features and a some shorts too post but grading has been on back burner for most of them.

Ive just been mostly "shut up and shoot" of late ;)

Great shot, this is from a motion piece?

Yup, but cheated a little. Filmed during a circus performance and he was hanging by a wire, moving himself in slow motion. Thought it was a nice shot in any case so got rid of the wire :)
No wire in this one though.

I went to Traverse City MI, experienced a helicopter ride for the first time. Just looking at the footage, so perhaps more pictures soon.

Adam,
Curious about your helicopter shooting. Did you use a gimbal at all?

Adam,

Is that a layer of grain that you added to the second image?

Sadly, I did not have a gimbal, but even if I did, it probably wouldn't even fit in that front seat, it was pretty tight. Had to take off my small monopod just to sit down! I got some cool shots, but my shutter was 1/48 for a bit, so the footage is cool looking, but too blurry for stills. I upped the shutter speed for some, but those shots were meh. Only had 15 mins up there, so not much time to even swap lenses really.

Adam,

I did add grain to that shot. I shot at 250ISO, and there are times where I really WANT grain. This is one of those times. Just adds another 'something'.

I agree! I think it looks quite beautiful. It gives it a sort of periodic look.
