  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shot on RED - Raven

Mostly shot 6:1. ISO went as high as 1600 and fps as high as 120- sparklers. All natural light- we didn't even mess with the practicals. Choice was on or off. We all work on pretty big crews so going out as a group of three is super liberating. We are working on doing this as a very dogme95 style film. Very honest, very raw, with the story taking the lead. Shot Rokinon glass 14-85. Lots of the 24 in there. Lots of people ask about or are hung up on the crop factor- easy to compensate for. Super tight bathroom shot was the first time I used the 14 on the camera aside from a couple of tests.

Django, this isn't an open show and tell thread. This is specific for Fishbowl. If you'd like to share please start your own thread. Thanks!

You mean to tell me that this thread was created way back in April, for the sole purpose and anticipation that Taylor might shoot a film and show it to us in July?

Oh just reading back and putting this into context- by no means is this thread about my film just all things shot on Raven. So the more the merrier- thanks for looking out Brandon, very strong visual statement Django. Can you tell us more about the project? Short? Feature?

Really keen to hear more about this - especially how the Raven goes with a small crew and an intimate shoot. How have you found the audio?

I wasn't rolling audio on this shoot but have used it for doc/ commercial stuff as back-up. Sounds pretty darn good. Working on a custom pig-tail for my confidence cable so there are no adapters involved. On a quickie i would have no problem with the internal audio.

We will add some personnel to the next shoot really just to lug things. I tend to want options and my "small" kit is three pelicans full. One for glass, one for the camera, and one for all the support gear. You get worn out lugging that stuff- But as far as building a small usable rig the camera is great. I'll post some pics this afternoon of the camera build.

Damn nice! Love the skin tones from my Raven too. Was it ISO 800? 3:1? I am thinking of getting another Rokinon, the 50mm as I have the 35 and 85mm which are both awesome.

Get the 50 you'll love it. I'm after that sigma you have. Your getting gorgeous stuff man!

I got the opportunity to escape to Arches National Park in Moab, Utah while on a job and shoot this quick Raven test in 100+ degree heat. .

Wow, glad to hear everything went well in heat like that. Too bad you couldn't shoot closer to sundown! Always more fun shooting landscapes at morning/dusk than broad daylight.

Rokinons do have a great organic character. I always found that amazing. They are not that "digitally sharp" and somehow I tend to like them. They are affordable and that's probably the reason some people stay away.
6:1 seem to be a lovely option. What is the compression that most people shoot with in Raven?

I'll guess that it changes project to project. For non-projected I figured between theatrical (3:1-4:1) and TV (7:1-9:1) would be the sweet spot for this project as far as data rate, mag usage, and quality are concerned. I just did an interview at 11:1 + ProRes and I plan on really digging into it next week. Interested to see how malleable it will be in post. I dont think there is any particular favorite that has emerged nor could really.

Here are a few quick screen grabs from a fashion gig I had last week. Raven with the Sigma 18-35. 96fps in 4k. No color correction just straight from the camera with DRAGONcolor and REDgamma2.

Looking great Tony! Between the work I've seen from you and Michael I'm sold on that lens!

LOVE seeing raw stills/video with lenses I actually have (Sigma!). Keep the footage coming - the longer I wait for my Raven, the more time I have to think about my purchase so seeing great footage is a plus.

First video I've shot/edited in about 6 years
First time ever using a RED
First time ever using Premiere
First time ever color grading/working with raw video clips.

All handheld with either a 16-35 or 24-70. The track is super backlit during the day.
