  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Short Film shot on Scarlet-X

Great short, I like the rigid cutting style, it really supports the narrative. Skin tones were super accurate and highlight retention was awesome. Only distraction was the focus pulling, other than that I was sucked into the story. Awesome job.

von Trier would be proud.

the beat at 1:01 is as cinematic as a vimeo screen gets. raw and honest, good work

Really great write up and short, Sebastian. I'm interested in the audio portion of the shoot.

I'm guessing you synched all of this by hand in Premiere and then once picture was locked, sent it off to Resolve for your final color pass? What mic was used?

I keep thinking having a Zoom mounted and feeding headphone/line out to camera for a scratch track would be a good solution to provide phantom power to mics since that's not an option yet on Scarlet. Probably would have to mock up a cable, though.

Sounds and images in service of a story, a story in service of helping the viewer understand what it is to be human. For me, this is film-making of the highest order. On a camera/tech website like this I guess I should say something about the images, but all I can say is the sound and image quality were good enough to become largely transparent. Like the acting, it wasn't distracting or overplayed, allowing me to put my critical mind aside and become immersed in the scene being presented, as if it were real. No doubt others don't share these points of view, but for me, this kind of film-making is what it's all about. So, thanks for showing that the Scarlet is capable of producing the kind of clean and clear images that can help draw me into a story, instead of keeping me at a distance with visual artifacts and tonal limitations etc.

Fine acting - but it's a shame that when he drops his bombshell that you did not shot over the shoulder of each of them so we could see both actor's faces and their reactions. Towards the end you have your actors face the camera more, which instantly was an improvement as we could connect more with the characters.

Story wise ... personally I would have more of a payoff for what you have set up ...

Scarlet footage, lighting, editing and color correction made it all look great.

Great work Sebastian I've been waiting for something like this, I was there, I felt the cold, I felt her pain. Now it feels like I really want my scarlet to arrive already.
By the way I am also interested in the audio, how you recorded it, what mic etc.

Funny thing, I totally think the opposite.. I didn't care about the guy anymore, I just wanted to see her reaction . I kinda like that it's unconventional as well.. If we all cover a scene the same way its boring.
i think it was really well done, even for a test.. It felt real.. Not staged.. Organic..
Just my opinion, not saying I am right or wrong..

Honestly, that was fantastic! We are all filmmakers/ cinematographers here so we are full of opinions and egos. So of course we would all probably do something differently, but lets not focus on that. Besides, I don't think I would change a damn thing :)

I loved the realism and organic feel of this piece. I enjoyed the editing and focus pulling. I though it was organic and it worked great for me. I was SOOO impressed with the cleanliness of the Scarlet image it almost makes me sick it is so beautiful! And for all the still lens doubters out there, this piece was shot entirely with a Canon 24-70. Yup, I think it is safe to say it produces gorgeous images ;)

Thanks for sharing this, it seriously made my night!!!

I also disagree that an over-the shoulder of her would have been better (and f- him!). It was so real I felt seeing her face would have been too invasive, since from the side I could see her face change color and tears start to well up in her eyes. Subtle can be more effective - forcing us to look harder and appreciate. Great acting on her part, all the way through.

I do have to say, though, the focus pulling was not seamless and was distracting in several parts. And I'm really not usually looking for those kinds of errors the first time I view.

Thanks for showing nice natural lighting with the scarlet/canon lenses. Nice to see.

Re: the film I really liked the use of sound. And I felt something sorta magical happened when he said "Im seeing someone else" - the wind/snow picked up which gave me the same cold rush she must have felt. This is why I love film..

Thanks Sebastian. Well done.

Nice CG effects of the hail coming down. Wow. Perfect timing and very realistic ;).

Wanted to see more of her face, her re-action to his words. Either OTS or turn them both towards the camera as it was done towards the end of the piece.

I didn't. It was the perfect framing for me. The focus hunting was the only thing I didn't like. I think the shot decision was excellent. It made me as an audience member trying hard to search for her expression. The director didn't give me but I could feel the strong emotions from that angle. We, the audience, are like a 3rd person in this scene. Also liked the editing and the sound. Good job.

I loved it Sebastian.

The searching, inability to see all things clearly, and non clean cutting, was clearly a choice and the point. Definitely works. I wanted to get a better look into her face the whole time also. But the lack of access and not always getting what you want is a powerful and very viable option also. As is an OTS CU though of course. Each would add different things. It's preference and choices.

But really, the blocking, lens and performance of the Scarlet is all by the by for me in comparison with the performances you got from you actors Sebastian. Whether you just cast brilliantly and created the right environment, (location would have helped - and how was the timing of that rain?) or whether you worked your actors hard to get just what you wanted. You brought to screen two very moving and organic performances. Congratulations.

Best Wishes

Lliam
