  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Short Film shot on Scarlet-X

I quite enjoyed that, and I was really surprised how sharp it was where it should be and the amount of detail in the image. Even on vimeo.
At which compression ratio did you shoot the movie?

Nice work. This is truly festival winner stuff for me. Like seeing a short with little or no Fx with good story telling and acting. Apart from that I think that this short is proof what the Scarlet is capable of. I was always afraid of Canon glass having to short depth of field somehow but I think you portrayed it superbly. Makes me more confident to start off with Canon glass. Even though I know that pulling focus on canon glass is difficult. But I think its better to start and then move on to PL glass when budget allows than trying to build a system with a set of PL glass in many years. I want a Scarlet quick. :)

I think this is really excellent. It is simple, and so effective, so well acted. The edit timing is perfect. And the footage image quality is simply exquisite, rendering of skin and the clothing, managing the highlights - beautiful. No other way to describe it. The very few previous examples of Scarlet footage I've seen have looked good to me, but this id the first I've seen where the image makes me really quite anxious to receive my camera.

Scarlet-X performs well (maybe the DoF is too shallow on some shots) but it looks like again that boring european dogma style...

I know it's only a test but multiple angles, tripod, etc... must be used properly. Even on a video project it's a mandatory.

I disagree. Nothing is mandatory, especially use of multiple angles and tripods. Whose to say what shots are appropriate and when to use a tripod? Oh right, the director.

Good looking footage, nice acting and editing.. But i was expecting a better plot point..

Beyond comments of story-telling merits, want to express on-going thanks for behind the scenes feedback, opinion and details of how the Scarlet performed!
continue to follow your blogs with great interest.

Looks great. Really enjoyed the test. And I think the long drawn out comments on vimeo criticizing you as a filmmaker for not making an award winning test film to be hilarious. It seems that they all missed the point.

Very nice. Without realizing it, I forgot all about "Scarlet" and all my concern went to Margarethe. I liked the cuts, composition, and the storyteller's approach. Thank you for that.

This is the finest film I have ever seen in my life. It's absolutely amazing to me. Everything about it. The timing was outstanding, The acting. The characters. The weather. The color. The lens. The story. The music. I even thought it was 3D holograph because it was clean. And someone said the hail was CG. I was like how did the weather know how to do that? The focus and clarity was CHILLING. Gave me the Shiver. Even more so was the metaphor, subtext of not continuing down the road, turning back and abandonment on an emotional and spiritual relationship...especially when looked back at the road ahead before turning back and her stumbling (thought I don't think that was scripted, it was a good improv to keep playing it in the next cut)

I feel I matured as a film producer just watching it. Thanks. The scarlet is incredible, I can't wait for mine to arrive because I see it doesn't take big budgets to do POWERFUL work. Also don't mind spending money of at better lense now.

Are you serious ? Is it a troll, isn't it ?

2 people are talking and there's no shot/reverse shot cut, no exposition shot, no large shot, no framing at all, and you get random cuts with a lot of silence. Looks like more an vacation video shot handheld with a 20 000 $ cam. The only positive thing here is that the Scarlet performs very nicely.

Dogma style is not art, it's just plain laziness/unprofessional. It's a caricature here of that style that almost killed the european cinema (fortunately not in France).

He's out and shooting though and that's all that matters : )

Maybe you don't know this, but many Hollywood films and directors, like Traffic from Sodderberg, The Bourne Series, etc. Got their "Cinematic Language" and visual style heavily inspired on "Dogma", which got inspiration from the Cinema Verite movement in France. Dogma was a Cinema Statement, a movement, with an ideal behind it, and it worked and created a breath of fresh air in World Cinema, both technically and in terms of performance and direction. While I'm not the biggest Dogma fan, I have to say some Dogma films are fantastic, and Lars Von Trier, one of its pioneers, whether you like his style or not, is a Master Filmmaker.

You should really try to see more than what "meets the eye" superficially in films. This film is full of subtext and layers beyond the apparent simplicity. The script is also very interesting. The performances spot on.

By the amount of likes on Vimeo and views, I think it captures the audience's hearts. Maybe you should look into why its creating such a positive reaction in the audience and try to see what others are seeing. One thing is to dislike by personal taste, the other is to criticize and dismiss the value of the work.

Do you know that the "Dogma 95" movement DIED in 2005 ?

It was way overused...and even the TV series "24 hours" used that kind of camerawork. Actually, my grandmother is doing great Dogma movies with her iPhone...

Armond White : "the manifesto that brought filmmaking closer to amateur porn".
He believed the movement would be rejected as insignificant by film historians.

From my point of view, dogma style is only a humbug, showing only the laziness of a director. Nothing more. Too bad, that some naive viewers see "art" or something else there.

Well, A Dogma Film won the Grand Jury award at Cannes (Breaking The Waves). They sure are a bunch of naive idiots there...
