Shooting S35 (5K) with Monstro VV

Hello,

I'm shooting a short film next week. 2nd time working with rental company Vantage Paris with their Hawk V-Lite 1.33 Lenses that I love, unfortunatly the 8K Helium that I asked wasn't avaible for us, so they gave me an Monstro VV option.
Testing today, lens coverage is between 6 and 4k depending on lens coverage (will shoot in 5K).

I was wondering if you guys have any experiences with 8K VV cropped in S35 mode regarding noise / iso performance and DR. I had to prep in a short time and wasn't able to make some keylight test... ugh !


Any info would be nice !

If your happy with helium then Monstro will be fine.. Monstro is less clippy than Helium with more DR. I also find it cleaner mm for mm and def pixel for pixel.

Same comment from my side.
I shot a TV show last Fall on Monstro mostly cropped at 5K and result was really good.
I own both Helium and Monstro and I have to say when cropping I definitely prefer Monstro.

Real, real familiar with this.

You'll be fine likely up to ISO 3200 with Monstro near S35 with the Standard OLPF, this is a net result from a recent test to sort of figure that out even. I'd still recommend ISO 800-ish as a general starting point. I've kinda been using Monstro a lot in 3 ISO ratings lately. 400, 800, and 1600. Though my last shoot I went 500 and 1000 oddly.

Anywho. Format size. For the purist, 5K FF is about the exact width of the Super 35mm format:

5.5K FF/5.5 HD is also the approximate image circle of S35 4-perf and you'll find a lot that covers 6K FF as well.

Everyone is different with respect to exposure strategies and sensitivities to noise but I personally wouldn’t shoot Monstro at 5k/3200 without either... the appropriate post in place or a test...

First day with this setup, I just came back from the other location for "pre-light check up".

Damn, I never had a camera that has that much dynamic range, it's so difficult to blow out anything or to crush anything in the dark. That sensor is crazy good, so soft and pleasing, it crush the Helium for me !

Yes I agree. Monstro to me is by far the best 5k camera I ever used.
