Anyone have any experience with these? I thought I was all set purchasing the Cinevate Durus and Titan Swing Away MB, but after hearing some posters say "stay away," I'm a little anxious now. I would love to get both for around $2600 total. I hear that Shoot35's gear is made of quality parts, just haven't ever used it.

Hi

I have the old Version 1 Follow Focus from Shoot35.
It's an OK tool. Not the best on the planet but considering the price it does a very well job.
I had an issue with internal sprockets wearing off because in the first model they were made out of plastic They changed it without extra cost. So no problems here.
The version 2 is all metal parts and will outperform my V1 I'm sure.

Again for the price you can't go wrong here.

Hey Chris,

If you're interested in a swing away matte box that has 2 4x5.65 rotatable filter trays (with the option of adding more), take a look at our microMatteBox. Also take a look at our microFollowFocus systems. All quality parts made and shipped from Texas. The microFollowFocus | Blue has been getting some great reviews around here, and it is currently my favorite product we offer. With backlash adjust and the option to add a second side, it's one future proof product.

Loren, I am interested in using your mFF|Blue with a RED One and Nikon glass. I'm confused about whether or not the microFF|Blue has a reversible gearbox to compensate for the focus direction on Nikon lenses? Could you please clarify?

Sure Tom,

Currently the gear box does not reverse the direction of the pull when you swap the side of the gear box around, all it does is put the drive gear closer to your camera so it can still make contact no matter the situations.

Thanks for the quick reply, but that is too bad! That is definitely something that you guys should investigate. I know a bunch of folks who shoot with Nikon glass who need that feature.

I received the matte box and follow focus from shoot35 just a couple of days ago. I was surprised at the excellent build quality for this price. It's not a $2000 matte box and $3000 follow focus, but for what you're paying, I would say the value is extremely high. Both units are also adjustable in about every way possible, which I was happy to see. The follow focus has an adjustment for the internal gearing as well so you can change the 'feel' of the follow focus to suit your taste.

Again, I've only had these a few days, but so far my only complaints would be that I wish the filter frames for the matte box were a bit stronger (i don't think they will break or anything, just wish they were a stiffer material), and they sometimes catch a bit trying to slide them in... This unit also only supports 4x4 filters, so with extremely wide lenses you may not be able to use this matte box with filtering. I've discovered that you 'can' still use the matte box without filters on extremely wide lenses by 'pushing in' the rubber bellows and moving the lens further forward... pretty easy to do.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to answer!

Post some pics if you can! I'd love to see the matte box in action.

Ian,

I'll have to do it mid to late next week, sorry... i'm out of town now for a few days and can't take pics as my camera isn't with me! I'll post pics when I can, though...

Greg
Hey no worries Greg. If you get around to it that would be great.

Hi Loren. I have used your matte box and though it is very solidly constructed there is nothing micro about it. It is large and unwieldy particularly for the new breed of small cameras. Have you considered making something smaller and lighter? If it was the same quality as your current mattebox at the same price I would buy it for sure.

Well, this thread certainly got my attention. Based on what the feedback has been it sounds like this would be a great mattebox option for me. Fully kitted out with flags and adapter rings for all my lenses I'd have enough money to get some really good NDs before matching the cost of the basic O-box WM that was my old first option. I'm using mostly stills glass with different diameters right now and this would probably do exactly what I need.

Harrison,

That was my plan exactly... got the shoot35 stuff, and spent more money on filters. I actually got the new Schneider Platinum IRND's the other day from Filmtools. Thier website had said they were not in stock yet, but I contacted Schneider and they said they were being shipped, so I called Filmtools and they said they had some in but already sold, and didn't know when they'd get more. I placed an order that day figuring I'd just wait in the queue for them... but I guess they had some because they were in my hands three days later!

Still haven't had a chance to test them out (out of town currently) though...

Greg

Wow... for anyone concerned about shipping time for Shoot35 products from the UK, mine (ordered thursday) is supposed to arrive in Montana on Tuesday. Hot damn that's quick!
