  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shane's Inner Circle

Just like Betamax was Beta? ;-)

"I want them chasing ARRI."<snip> " but the overall consensus is that the Alexa looks just a little bit better."

Running backwards ... doesn't spell Red :-)

When Arri manage to digest 6k in a small form factor, or are able to extract more colour rendition in a smaller pixel size, it will be Arri following the giant footsteps of others.

In-camera Film LUTs is what doctor ordered, especially for the old-school cinematographers. Basically a kind of built-in FilmConvert analog look emulation. I doubt that's gonna happen anytime soon, but if done correctly it could turn a lot of heads. Amira's internal LUTs option is insanely popular, as far as I know.

In the almost total absence of traditional 'marketing' - it seems that RED really relies on early adopters and this group of 'Fanboi's' to use and spread the gospel.

Which is where all the upgrade deals come into play.

The early adopter thing is completely over. It's been announced. Epic Dragon was the end of the line.

So what you're saying is the first people to jump on Dragon to Weapon upgrades during N.A.B. aren't early adopters?

no. the benefits of being an early adopter have been exhausted. Red have stated that there would not be further deals or cue, for early adopters, the carbon people are at the front of the line.

Ahhh Got it - so there are no discounts for the people who order Weapon during N.A.B.; nor will there be an upgrade program for those who own Dragon before N.A.B.?

I must have completely misunderstood, excuse my naiveté.

None of that has been announced. I am basing things on what we know. After Dragon RED let people know that the cue was changing and it would be this way going forward. I can't comment on what RED is announcing at NAB because I do no know and I do not work for their company.

There is an upgrade program for people who own Dragon and RED has stated that it might be wise to get in on Dragon before NAB.

Glen...

By "Early adopters", RED used to mean people who got into the RED ONE before it was even a camera.
And I guess that's what David is answering to.

Sure. RED does things to gauge the initial market and reward those who believe in them with discounts.
So in that respect... But what is wrong with that?

There has traditionally (wow. Gee... Saying that word when it comes to RED) been a huge advantage (in rentals) in being an early adopter (in your sense of the meaning) with RED cameras.
No reason to believe that that has changed when it comes to Weapon.

I guess that is a good reason for queuing up...

I'm using the Formatt Firecrests for literally everything now. 4x5.65" and 77mm Screw-In

Phil, since you own both, I'd be curious if you see a performance difference between the two for the different thickness (just received a screw-in set for my Scarlet MX but did not have time yet to test It properly).
Thanks!

Finally someone who understands what I was talking about... Forums can be so difficult to get a point across.

By 'Early Adopters' I was referring to those people who get the newest first (that is the meaning of that phrase outside of the Red ecosystem) and then by having and using those early cameras they evangelize for RED.

RED helps out these early adopters with discounts (Never said I had a problem with this, as I've benefitted greatly) as a cheap (from a marketing sense) way to get the cameras out there.

I have no idea what David read into my initial comment.

Watching Part 1 now… such great info! Shane rocks! (Phil is reduser's own "inner circle"… Phil rocks too! ;) )

edit: I wish he had looked at Firecrest NDs which is what I bought on Phil's reco sometime back

I think his lighting schedules are inspiring and learned a few bits. The things he shows you are pretty basic for the price but I learned a lot.

What I didn't know is you still have to pay for the really cool stuff. So only 50% of the site is usable. That was a big bummer.

Still I thinks it's worth the money so far because her really takes the effort to tell all the ins and outs and details in making films. And goes all the way in detail.
I will make my DOP decisions easy'er and more confident. Also, Shane has besides knowledge a terrific style he gets out of the image.

Nice shout out which was a surprise.

Next time I bump into Shane I want to talk about his IRND notes. Because they are a bit conflicting and you can see a noticeable tint when using the IRNDs, which is why I don't recommend them.

I used to follow shane's blog since the very beginning, I was still shooting DSLRs and and read every single post on his blog for a long time (besides every other blog dedicated to DSLRs and digital cinematography in general)

I stopped because he began to contradict himself too much. One day he would say he loved the C300, the other day he would say he taught it was videoish. Then he would say the Alexa, was the best camera he had ever used, then he would advocate the C500... Among other things that started to piss me off. The entire time I read his blog, he never even acknowledged the existence of the EPIC (or any other RED camera in fact), the only time I know he did, was in a podcast where he briefly said that the Epic was a good camera for science fiction, but I once read Philip Bloom responding to someone one facebook that Shane hated RED.

This two blog posts about Dragon are confusing, first of all, he's saying that Dragon has IR contamination problems. This is the exactly opposite of what everyone on this forum is saying (and some like you Phil, are showing), his prints don't show any sing of IR contamination either, but yet he says they are there.... He's also saying the higher ISO you go, the less highlight protection you have...

I think you should start a blog of your own Phil, the content you post in here is far more scientific and relevant than anything I've seen on shane's blog. It would be nice to have all the invaluable information you posted here, gathered in one place. You are the most didactic person I know.

Just curious - is Shane's Inner Circle worth the price of admission?

I joined as an impulse buy out of curiosity. The lighting setups are kind of interesting. Probably won't renew though.

I would definitely subscribe to "Phil's Inner Circle". One of my favorite Redusers.
