  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

“Set Up”- Bruce Willis, Ryan Philippe and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

I remember seeing this movie a while back, and thinking about why they would color like they did. Firstly, the movie isn't atrocious but it is in the same realm as those bad Val Kilmer/50 Cent/Cuba Gooding Jr. straight to DVD movies that are coming out every six weeks. Not sure why I went off topic there for that sentence or where I planned on going with it. But anyway, yes, they butchered that one in color correction, and I'd be curious to see what the original footage looked like. I've seen a lot of underexposed imagery that just didn't fair well when being colored, that made it go all contrasty, similar to this film.

There you are again. Why would I have to be here to 'hurt your community'? Is this a cult or a camera forum? You are scaring me....

Although I prefer the Alexa, I nonetheless am interested in other cameras, such as Canon and Sony and of course, Red. Is that ok with you? I promise I won't use CAPS LOCK to hurt you...

I think Red is a wonderful camera, and an incredible piece of modern technology. There are wonderful, talented people out there doing incredible looking images with it. But it does have a couple of issues that I want to understand better. Hence my reply to this thread, because highlight handling is one of them. (And people with your attitude is another...)

Can I please go now?

Caps lock all u and I welcome all discussions you just seem so angry for no particular reason.

I'm not angry, at all! Maybe I just got a little defensive with your posts. But nothing to the point of getting me angry.

Olive branch extended. Alexa is a good camera, for my needs it doesn't make sense. If you like it more power to you but I will leave you with this, I am up for a friendly shootout/side by side comParison if you'd like.

Maybe the Dragon chip will convince me out of Arri. But to be honest, at this point in time, it's only really a matter of personal taste. To a certain extent, specs don't make up my mind when choosing a camera, I look at an image and test it with my eyes. I absolutely love the look of Social Network, in my opinion, its the first film to really make the best use of what a Red camera can do, in an original, fresh, creative way. I just wished it weren't so dark, but I do love the look.

So, when 'judging' films that were shot on such and such camera, it's really important to take into account who shot it... I loved the Alexa shot 'In Time', but hated 'Tower Heist', I couldn't believe they were shot with the same camera...

Well the Colorist was Scott Gregory and he knows what he is doing, just look at Memoirs of a Geisha, and the dozens of other high budget films he's worked on. I haven't seen the mentioned film, aside from a heavily compressed youtube trailer so can't judge whether I liked their creative choice.

Well there is more than cameras that are tossed in the mix when making movies, and as all ingredients add flavor it's quite difficult to sense what is what. Personally I view Alexa, RED and also material from most other digital cameras in my daily work on 3 different, side by side, reference monitors on a daily basis while sitting in my flame doing EFX work. Most often I also have the raw source and the graded source side by side. And I can tell you there are crazy decisions made in grading, ill DOP/director judgment, Ill knowhow among colorists, Bad workflows, etc. And this is not in the low end of things I seen international feature source material being laid out raw to SONY HD CAM and then graded... oops, it looked terrible and the little mishap pretty much killed the "Viper era" here in scandinavia. For some reason the camera was kicked out instead of the misused HD CAM deck that actually was the error with it's super high compression codec. Just to mention one anecdote.

So true. There's a whole lot of learning to do in regards to digital workflow. I have also seen the most ridiculous things being made to Alexa and Red footage, only due to bad media management, or just plain lack of know how. In fact, the digital workflow its much easier and much more 'artistic friendly' than film workflow, but a lot of people still don't know how to understand the use it to their benefit.

This film seems to have done everything right. It's probably just an artistic choice and (in my opinion) pushing the files in a direction that the MX sensor doesn't handle very well. I have seen that kind of clipping in other films, maybe that mixed with a high contrast grade, makes for a not very pleasant look.

Why would you choose such an idiot fake name to write some informed comments? Were you planning on bashing only, but turned out it is possible to have a civil conversation around here? If you really respond by the name of Caralho you might be used to having people being sent in your direction wrongfully upset with you. Poor Caralho. I suggest you come forward.

Dear Nuno, if my conversation is not civil enough for you, then I suggest you go somewhere else. I choose whatever name I damn want to use, and it's not up to you or anyone else to tell me otherwise.

Don't act like you're in some sort of authority to say I'm bashing. When did I disrespected anyone? Are you aware that you were the one to bring that nonsense up? And who do you think you are to suggest 'to come forward'? People like you are the reason everyone looks at here as some sort of crazy cult, alienating a lot genuinely interested people away, and giving other amazingly smart and interesting people here a bad rep. I'm here to look up information, engage in conversation and try to feed up my respect fro Red. But its people like you that make that job increasingly difficult.

The forum administrator tells you otherwise:

"REDuser is a Real Names only community. First names only is not acceptable. We prefer that you use your full first and last name, but there is more than one option available. Any new accounts that do not register with their real name will be suspended."

Your Nick is offensive, and to the portuguese community that read this forum it can only do harm. I suggest the mods look up Caralho.

I have done. I seriously cannot believe it's your real name, and this is a real names forum.

Graeme

That's fine by me. But this is my real name.

Is that really true? Your name is really Caralho? I really doubt that. This is a real name forum and you should ask it to be corrected. And if that is your real name, then I feel sorry for you, and you should ask your parents what they were thinking when they gave you that name

...And yet, I know real people who's last names are "dick" or some variation of "cock....". I had an employee in the late 90's who's real name was Harold Dick. He would always introduce himself as "My name's Harry... Harry Dick". And he always got a kick out of it. I went to high school with a girl named "Cockgrasp".

Actress "Olivia Wilde" was actually born "Olivia Jane Cockburn" -- just sayin'

You are so boring...

You're not helping yourself. If it's truly your real name, just state that and move on. I can understand why people are skeptical. I would be too, but have enough life experience to make me take pause. And while this is a real names forum, I'm 99.99% sure there are plenty of people here still using aliases. People are defined by their words and actions, not their names. Your name can be "dick", just don't start acting like one.

Wow Jeff...haha I can't imagine how many jokes that girl must've got...I had a teacher once named 'cockburn', science teacher actually so with that said...names are names. I highly doubt he chose his last name but this is totally off topic and doesn't benefit the thread.

I saw Set up...I'm actually stunned it was shot on RED....it can't be totally shot on RED, it just doesn't look as well...nice? I mean that in the way that, it looks like it was 1080p kind of cam, EX3 sort of look. I know dirty can look good but this is the whole look that it seems they've pushed stuff a bit much or rather they really didn't know how to expose or color correction went wrong...

I'm assuming that this is just the style they went for and that it, on their part, it was bad processing of the footage possibly? Kind of sad really...the story was just a bit...well never mind. Looks wise though, like I said, can't believe it was RED footage but then again...I guess anyone can make good footage look bad when processed wrong... was it possibly intentionally this way?
