Sensors are the heart of every digital camera. The company that has the best sensor is most likely to have the best camera.

We at RED have put a tremendous amount of our resources towards sensor development. We do it in house. We do not have outside companies doing the work for us.

There are 3 main characteristics that need to be addressed in sensor development... (no particular order).

1. Dynamic Range

2. Resolution

3. Frame Rates.

Some companies will tell you that 1080P is "good enough" and that dynamic range is all that matters. Not so. Everything matters. 1080P or 2K is not enough. 60fps is not good enough. And dynamic range is the holy grail.

There has been a leap-frog effect recently going on with sensors. Someone has more resolution... then someone has more dynamic range... etc.

Dragon is fire-breathing for a reason. It does everything... times a million. It will have more native dynamic range than any digital camera ever made... way more than film actually. It will be 6K. And it will run at speeds that you expect, over 100 fps.

The incredible thing is that the Dragon sensor is an upgrade. You don't have to buy a new camera to get the advantages of the Dragon sensor. You just need to own an EPIC or Scarlet.

RED is designed for the shooter.... and the owner. We believe in Obsolescence Obsolete. We don't pick your pocket. We are you.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion."

We need you. Our program doesn't operate without you.

There are no more excuses with your cameras, they are within reach for anyone who is serious. We should also be proud that they are made in America.

Of course. Color has been improved all along the way and will continue to improve. The beauty of this is RAW. Whatever you have shot only gets better with every new color science release.

Jim

What about color reproduction? Any improvements there?

Oh man,
I hope that dragon can improve the frame rate performance of scarlet (@ 4k and 5k... 6k is a mirage) and the latitude.
But honestly I'm very satisfied with the "old mx" ... It has changed my life. Thanks RED!

Once Dragon lands and likely some forth coming unannounced accessories I think there will be another mass exodus towards the Red camp again. Get on the Ark. You don't want to go extinct!

Sounds like everyone is gonna be chasing the dragon. Can't wait for the upgrade program to start!

I have decided to stick with MX Epic... Love it as it is...

But your teases makes me hunger for dragon, smartguy! :)

Still love the MX on the Epic.

The biggest budget features have been shot on EPIC MX. There is certainly nothing wrong with the current EPIC. But everything moves forward. The Dragon is a monumental leap in technology. We are just happy to make this available to our customers as an upgrade "if you want".

Oh I want it alright. Don't even need it because the Epic is so awesome already, but the leaps you are talking about for only $6k is a no-brainer! Will just be so cool to see it in action!

I have no doubt the technical specs of Dragon will be nothing short of amazing. What perks my curiosity is the logistics of the upgrade. Especially as a Scarlet owner.
In any case, thanks for the updates Jim.

Can you PLEASE just buy Avid?! :) :) :)

I have grown so ill from witnessing their inability to understand the market and what their customers actually want.

It feels like you guys have done more development in RedCine and RedCine-X than Avid has done with Media Composer, Symphony and DS over the same time period.

Any chance the dragon will be able to do focusing in post? Remember Jim said something about Red developing this technology...
