  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Screenplay / Script apps?

Are you looking for a particular platform? Are there any other functions or features that are important to you besides a template? What kind of writing do you plan to do, what kind of templates do you need?

Thanks Scott, Windows or Android....

I've never really thought about script writing before, but had a good idea and want to see where it goes... I think the idea has enough legs to be a feature, but might be too much for a new comer? I've always been good at creative writing, so just need to get to grips with the actual structure of script writing. Something easy to use, with simple templates to follow.

I switched from Final Draft to Fade In. It runs on every platform (including iOS, Linux and Android). It's only $49 too (there is a trial). Is it really better than Final Draft? Yes, much! Check out the trial.

I also have been using Scrivener too lately. Fade In will import scrivener files (and Final Draft and pretty much anything else).

Yea Final Draft is like a defacto standard. If you think you will be sharing or collaborating with anyone you will want to be sure that whatever you choose plays well with Final Draft. Most others will open FD files, some will save in FD format.

Celtx is free to start, and offers a mobile app and online storage/synch. I believe it imports Fnal
Draft format. You might try dabbling in that.

Thanks guys, i'll test these out... I just noticed that DVX has a script writing sub section, although I feel more at home over here...

I've decided to try my hand at a short script first, a fairly simple narrative idea I have that I could also fund and direct... Then i'll think a bit more about the feature idea (it would be a pretty complex piece and certainly something I couldn't fund myself, so I think too much for the 1st attempt).

Any other advice or resources would be more than welcome.

Thanks again, Jay

Another vote for Celtx. Used Final Draft for quite a few years - it's compatibility with scheduling software was always a bonus and made it a bit of a must.
But I got tired of the upgrading. So another plus one now for CELTX - great program - free and better now than what you paid for in the early years for with Final Draft.

I'm also interested in Adobe Story currently - it's integration looks terrific and if I had to back a horse in this race long term it would be Adobe - because I think integration is the future and Adobe looks to be all over it.

Final Draft.

ScriptsPro on iPad/iPhone - Sometimes I'll be on vacation and start writing stuff on this. Easily exports to Final Draft etc.
Index Card on iPad - great for outlining scenes and ideas and arranging them.

Al,

Is it possible to import index card into ScriptsPro? I had a bunch of stuff that I had to copy/paste to move it over: serious drag. Then I found Storyist. There are iPad and desktop apps. You can start with index cards and lay them out next to the manuscript, shuffle them around etc. it's really nice. You can arrange them in an outline, add notes and images.

One shortfall is a lack of robustness in the naming of characters. It is intelligent about filling in the names for you as you type, but they don't exist in a database like Final Draft, so there is no easy way to change a character's name once you've started. You are stuck with find/replace... Not optimal.

It's not for you though Jay. It's OSX only. Sorry.

Edit: the mobile app is iOS iPad only, so if you are into iPad you might like it.

I liked the look of Movie Draft SE on the Mac App store £20.00. Has some great reviews. Not used it much but seems good to me. Will feed back once I'm more familiar with it.

Thanks, I feel a little validated then. It seemed simple enough that it should have worked as .txt even, but I got nada.

If index cards are integral to your methods, look @Storyist. It's not without it's trade-offs but it is strong in areas that ScriptsPro is not.

Scott let me give it a try. I'll get back to you.

Update: I could not export from Index Card to Scripts Pro.

It's part of creative cloud package, perfect.... I think that is the one for me.

Adobe creative cloud is the best deal i've ever known... I still can't wrap my head around it!

Yes Adobe Story looks killer integrated into production. Let us know how you like it!

Thanks I'll give that a try. In fact ScriptsPro has been crashing on me lately so maybe time to try something different :)
