Screenwriter is a solid app that's comparable to Final Draft feature-wise.

If you have no money and you are just starting out and learning, then CeltX.

Its free. Can't beat free.

Sample scripts? simplyscripts.com

Lots of good content to read on that website.

When you grow up, I recommend Final Draft, just because its easier to go from there to EP scheduling/budgeting.

EP Scheduling and Budgeting are THE standard, and you want a screenwriting application that plays well with both. Final Draft does.

Can't recommend Adobe Story, because I'm not sure how well it plays with the EP tools.

I use Movie Magic Screenwriter.

I'm very satisfied with it, and how the navigator there works, the features and the customer service. But it hasn't been updated in a long while though (the same can be pretty much said of Final Draft, although they had their 8-update is more recent then MM 6.

Fade In looks very interesting, and I love how it works on all platform, the developer really seems to care, and how there is immediately some mobile apps to go with it. But I didn't feel as comfortable in it as in Movie Magic Screenwriter, and I'm probably going to finish my current work in MM, whatever I use next.

I bought Scrivener too on the App store, but haven't really used it yet. Seems to have a nice feature set.

Final Draft.

ScriptsPro on iPad/iPhone - Sometimes I'll be on vacation and start writing stuff on this. Easily exports to Final Draft etc.
Index Card on iPad - great for outlining scenes and ideas and arranging them.

I'll second this. I use FD 8 at home on the desktop along with Scripts Pro when I'm out and about. Although lately found myself using Scripts Pro at home too since it has just about everything I need feature wise including iCloud which is cool.

I think we have a second & Third (i.e. Al Lougher & George Elbon) ....

I have also cut over to FDWriter on the ipad for 90% of my script work and only use FD8 on the PC when i want to re-arrange things via the card interface. FDWriter & FD8 integrate perfectly together now - when you read your email on the ipad, all you do is click on the attachment and you pop into fdwriter(so you can send to your email from either fdwriter or you pc, and just 1-click to fdwriter to start editing). Also with the "split" thumb keyboard on the ipad, i find i'm writing fairly quickly now and am doing about 90% of my script work on the run on the ipad(on trains, traveling, walking, coffee shop, etc). All the xml that I use moves perfectly between fdwrite and fd8, so there are no worries on all the tags.

Also I do all my paragraph add's with Siri ... it really is nice on the ipad (saves a ton of typing ... plus i think i write a more "natural" dialog when i speak it into the computer).

Hi Patrick,

that's a REALLY good point about dictating your script dialogue to help it sound more natural! Never thought to do that before but you've just made me realise why my dialogue is probably lacking compared to my descriptive prose.

Good to meet you at the recent SF Reduser group too!

For myself, I use Final Draft 8 on my PC and ScriptWrite on the iPad. I'm very curious about FDWriter though in regard to making sure all the XML stays intact between transfers. Fade In sounds interesting too, expecially since I use Android, iOS and Windows interchangeably :)

Incidentally, I just bought the new iPad Mini and a Logitech K810 Bluetooth keyboard (which pairs with up to three devices) and it really is a very cool way to type on your iPad!

Good thread!

Cheers,
