I just got a last minute high profile job starting on Tuesday, and need to get a scratch track solution working on the Scarlet by then. The two tools I have so far are the Rode Videomic, and Sennheiser LAV's. I also have a cold shoe on the way to be able to mount the audio, but I know that the Videomic will not work with the Scarlet without modifications. Is there an easy answer out there? If I was going to use this:

With the XLR from the LAVs, would that definitely work? What is a cheap shotgun microphone that will work with that XLR plug?

Sorry if this has been tackled before, but I still have not found a definite answer, especially a solution that you can get on the fly (Wooden Camera A-Box is backordered).

For a scratch track I've been using a Sen ME66 into a wooden cam ABox. Solid working solution.

C'mon Ryan is in L.A. - Huge film community (or so I'm told…) that he could call on to find an ABox for rent or loan; especially if it's a high profile job that you don't want to screw up.
I wouldn't even go out on a low profile freebie job with a second rate jerry rigged set-up, it's your rep as a filmmaker that's on the line and the client's money.

Glen - the A-box is backordered (as he mentions).

Ryan, sorry bud - I don't have an access to the older version. Try to get in somehow. Otherwise, as a quick temp fix, just get a stereo to mono converter. That will tie you over...

That looks like a great simple solution. Does that converter just go into the mini jack on the Scarlet, and the Rode into the converter?

That's a good point, and I certainly would do that if it came down to it.

Ryan - yes - converter into Dcarlet, mic into converter - no other mods. Just be careful when they enable phantom power in future firmware updates...

Glen, while this might be a high-profile job, he still needs this only for scratch track - not as the main audio. But yes, renting the A-box could be an alternative...

Picked up the gold plated version of the converter at Radioshack for $4 today. Works great, and audio doesn't sound half bad. Thanks a ton Peter, very glad to get that off my back. The converter itself is also very small and unobtrusive. Definitely a recommended easy solution.

Glad to be able to help - just remember to keep an eye on the firmware updates if they enable phantom power. Try to find another solution by then...

Peter

I will. Are we all going to need to use phantom powered mics once it is enabled?

You won't have to, but a mono plug will short the power with signal possibly causing damage to the audio board. You might be still able to use the mono plug by disabling the phantom power in the camera settings BEFORE plugging in the mono, but all it takes is one wrong touch in the menu and... Not worth the risk. You will need to re-wire your mic, or use properly wired cable/converter...
