3K Export via FCP?

Hey there

I have some shot footage with the RED cam at 3k and i learned that FCP's max export resolution is at 2k. I'm currently editing with the proxies but would like to do the export soon.

Now I read about Assimilate Scratch, but I don't wanna pay for that tool just to export my footage at it's original resolution.

Any idea how I can do this?

Thanks much

First of all... you would not want to export proxies. Proxies are.... well they are ugly. They are fine for rough cuts, in my opinion... not everyone agrees with me on that, but use them to your hearts content.

Then export an XML and use a tool like clipfinder, or Rubber Monkey or Crimson to get back to the raw and using a tool like Redcine, you can transcode or render out your selects at resolutions up to the original 4k.

You can also do a Send to Color, and Color will relink to the raw files, then you can adjust the look of your timeline, set the project resolution to what every you want, like 3K for instance, and render out of color.

This is a basic overview of some options. There is a ton of info on this forum for doing this kind of work. I suggest searching a bit... you will quickly uncover good information.

Thanks and yes i wasn't about to export proxies, i just use them to edit my footage.

When you say "Send to Color". Is that directly out of FCP and Color will automatically recognize to use the original .r3d files instead of the proxies?

Yes, File menu... Send to Color.

Remove your speed changes first. I also recommend downloading the latest beta Color Framework first... http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41389. Then yes, your proxies should point directly to your .R3D files.

Good luck!

Thanks. I downloaded and installed this latest Color framework.

However I now did a test with "Send to Color" and trying to export at it's original resolution. I'm not quite sure if Color recognized the actual .r3d file. Because in the render panel it's using the proxy quicktime resolution of 720-something and when i choose the 4k resolution it asks me if it wants me to resize it.

Is there anything else i need to know or how to make Color use the actual .r3d footage for export?

Thanks

In the primary in room, is the RED tab enabled? Can you see options for working in that tab or is it all grayed out? If it works... your looking at .R3D files.

changing resolution of a project (based on your proxy timeline resolutions no doubt) will prompt for a rescale. the geometry room will show your scale relative to the source. you can make changes in there.

Yes that tab works and i can change settings there.

But are you sure it's using the native .r3d resolution? I did a test render now out of color and the image quality looks rather like a scaled up version of the medium quicktime proxy i'm using to edit it in FCP.

Maybe it is rendering out higher res. It's hard to tell right now. I'm not sure if it made a nice interpolation of the smaller proxy or really using the native resolution for the render.

If your working in the RED tab, it's using the .R3D file as source and Color is doing the debayer. Based on your earlier post, sounds like your geometry settings might be out of whack to your project render settings. It shouldn't look scaled up.

If your source footage is 4k and our project settings resolution preset is 4k, then your geometry tab scale settings should be set to 1.0000 for a 1:1 resolution "scale".

If your scaling down from 4k to 3k in Color... not sure how well that will debayer, but in theory it should do it with out issues. I don't scale in Color, I do that in Redcine typically.

Color is not designed for transcoding a ton of stuff, its a grading tool. You might find that using Redcine first is a better route... but then again, I am not sure exactly what issue your having based on the description.

Double check the project res, your geometry settings and your render settings (Color proxys off). Then try reading the RED white papers about this workflow, make sure your not missing something.

Nevermind I think it is using the native resolution. I just opened it in QT7 (was looking at QTX previously) where i can see the actual size and it was huge at 4k, no way it could have interpolated it that way from the proxy.

Hey I've got another question regarding the speed changes.

Some of my clips were shot in slow motion and i'd like to speed up some of them but it was mentioned not to use any speed changes when sending to Color.

Any way it can be done anyway? Or do i have to do any speed changes afterwards?

Generally your asking for problems if your sending speed changes to Color and relinking to R3D files. If I am doing frame ramps in my offline, I remove speed attributes in a duplicated timeline before I export an XML for Crimson or send to Color. Then when I have my round-tripped color grades, I copy/paste speed attributes back on my clips to conform.

Test the waters, see what works for you.

Thanks for info.

By the way i successfully exported all the shots via Color but only two are behaving strange. Basically, in Color they didn't seem to have gotten a proper XML info and they are frozen clips, it's just showing one frame no matter how i scrub through those two clips and the frames displayed in the Color viewer aren't even from the selected timeframe of the clip as in it's FCP timeline.

Any idea what is happening and how i can fix this?

Thanks

That is the "spanned clip bug". When you link to clips that are spanned, or in other words, you have multiple .R3D files in a clip folder because it's a long take and the files reach the max size and span... you get this freezing bug.

I thought the new beta plugin for Color fixed this, make sure you have the latest download from the linked discussion I posted above. That aside there is a fix using clip-finder, plenty of post on this forum about that specifically. Search for that.

Ah yes, for those particular shots there are indeed multiple r3d files in the same folder. And yes i have the latest version of the plugin.

I worked around by exporting the desired shots with Redcine-X.
