Hi all,

Long time no post here... though I have been regularly lurking. ; ) Thought you all would find this an interesting addition to your post toolbelt.

http://www.assimilateinc.com/products/scratch-play

Supports R3D and other less important camera formats. ; )

I won't requote the press release. Suffice to say - it's a comprehensive media player for free. Also includes the CONstruct (ASSIMILATE's version of a timeline), and an ASC CDL-based color suite with the ability to import and export 1D LUTs, 3D LUTs, or CDLs. Check out the videos on the "Demos and Help" page. Four really short video clips that give a lot of good information on how to maximize the tool.

Available now for Mac and Windows.

Best,

Lucas

Extending the Scratch savvy ecosystem is a smart move. Is there any limit on resolution support? Assuming the storage I/O can keep up and the graphics board can handle it, would SCRATCH Play support play out to UHD and 4K displays? Can you manually select the refresh rate in SCRATCH Play? Or will that require management in the GPU driver?

Cheers (and welcome back, Lucas "Mr. Kotter" Wilson, we missed you) - #19

While lite as far as workstation requirements go, a 15" rMBP with 2.7GHz i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT650M, 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM seems to have trouble playing back an HD ProRes 4444 file. I have tried both a 1920x1080 ProRes 444 and an odd sized 1920x818 created with Resolve and another 1920x1080 ProRes 444 clip directly from an Arri Alexa with identical results. They play back fine in every other software on this machine yet it stutters, drops frames and eventually won't play at all in Scratch Play. Is that normal for the software?

Hey Michael,

I'm running it on an 11" MB Air - Intel5000 w/8G RAM and can playback 1920x1080 ProRes realtime no issues... not sure! Can you - OFFLIST - send me a link to the file?

Yes, smart move to break out the player from the regular Scratch, as it always was a part of a standard installation of standard Scratch. I always liked how you could double click on DPX file and the Player would lunch and just play the sequence without the need to fire up the Resolve.

In my preliminary testing, it does not play out over SDI, at least not on cards such as AJA and Blackmagic.

Right yes, I didn't mean to imply that this product does all that Scratch does; it's great that they are separating out all the functions that Scratch has because this will underline all that it does - I think people overlook it because it's all integrated and some things could be missed - due also to its deceptively simple UI (which is also an asset).

Hi all,

While SDI out is not supported, a dual-head display *is* supported. That means HDMI and DisplayPort out of your computer of choice can feed image to a display. I have SCRATCH Play running on two machines - a Surface Pro and an 13" MB Air. I'm using the display output on both to run separate displays. SCRATCH Play also supports LUT import for the heads-up display and the dual head display, so you can get a proper color space for monitoring.

We have been working for a while with Microsoft to maximize SCRATCH Play on a Surface Pro. It's an impressive device and has the potential to really change the on-set dynamic. Having seen SCRATCH Play + Surface Pro on several EPIC shoots now, I'm pretty impressed, as are the DPs and DITs we have been working with.

If you have not seen a Surface Pro and you're an on-set guy - you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Over the next few weeks, you'll also see some cool stuff come from the @surface and @assimilateinc twitter feeds. Stay tuned... ; )

Lucas what HDMI an displayport monitors do you recommend for color-critical work?

Dude - I'm not a DIT or colorist and I don't even play one on TV. : )

A few years ago, I could have recommended some good ones. But I honestly don't know the current state of monitor tech well enough to give you a decent recommendation.

Nice Lucas , welcome back!
I like Sccratch a lot, need to play with it.
Cheers from Brasil

We've been using the beta on the SurfacePro and it plays R3D's easily. lower res but still being able to go through the raw files is pretty rad for a little tablet. Pushing it onto MacPro and rMBPro today.
