  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCRATCH Play - a FREE tool from ASSIMILATE

Any possibility of AJA/BMD SDI support in future, or is that a feature deliberately reserved for the commercial products?

Hi Nick,

Not really deliberately reserved.

SDI typically requires some support to set up. The correct hardware/drivers/storage-system-for-realtime/etc. We want the initial experience to be as smooth as possible without worrying about doing an SDI setup for a $5.00 product.

Had to draw the line somewhere... for v1... ; )

Sure. I hope the question didn't come across as too cheeky. I'm certainly not suggesting you should give away more for free. In fact I would consider paying significantly more that $5, but much less than the cost of Scratch Lab, for a "plus" version of Player with SDI support.

If you chose to reserve SDI support for the commercial products that would be a perfectly reasonable business decision.

Nope - not cheeky at all! And even if it was - hey - this is Reduser. Par for the course!

SCRATCH Play is definitely not a "let's throw this out there and see what happens" product. This is the start of something... and there is a plan... and when it all comes together, I think you will be impressed. ; )

That said, it is new ground for ASSIMILATE. this kind of feedback is really important. I encourage you to join the SCRATCH Play forum to discuss further!

Best,

Lucas

Lucas, what's the difference in the free version vs. $5 version?

I started off today with the free version and not getting very solid playback even with my RR card installed. so i just assumed the $5 version might unlock the power of the Rocket....I also see that there are ways to enable Cuda and OpenCL....but i'm not finding how to choose my Quadra4000 card....At any rate, i get choppy playback even when choosing RR card. Is this a work in progress or should i be getting solid playback? I get flawless playback on RCX with my rr card....?
Thanks and looks very promising and i would like to use it more for my initial grades and stock work....but just need to get into full debayer with rocket and any Cuda boost.
I hope more tutorials are on the way on setup.
Thanks.....very exciting!

Hey John!

The *only* difference between the free and $5 version is the ads. Zero diff in performance or other functionality. That said... I don't know what is at the root of the issue. Can you please join the SCRATCH Play forum and ask the question there?

I don't want to turn Reduser into a support forum for SCRATCH Play. : )

Best,

Lucas

Ok, my report…

Played extensively with Play, a Macbook pro 13 (no retina, with i7 2.9) and my prototype of FiberPack II…

Running on batteries all the setup for 4+ hours play around with 10bit DPX movie acts, RED R3Ds, 1080p uncompressed QuickTime’s all from FiberPack with 300MB/sec read speed, PLAY was amazing!!!

I already connected a MacAlly Mini display port to HDMI to an LG Flatron IPS231 for Dualhead setup…

All calibrated with CineSpace Luts, I loved the dual LUT ability of PLAY… An aja mini converter HDMI to SDI will fix my need for video out preview… But with my Flatron and its Color performance over HDMI I’m pretty happy…

With PLAY and fiber raid on location you can play ¼ res R3Ds just like that with no problem at all… You can play even a full 2K movie act of DPX…

My verdict, PLAY is an amazing offering from Assimilate and it will bring lots of clients that will love it!

Thanks Lucas!

Evangelos: are you playing back R3d's full rez or only 1/8?
EDIT: i see you are playing at 1/4 rez.....

Lucas,

I noticed that when playing .MOV's, the 32-bit process Scratch QuickTime Decoder is active. May I ask, does this mean that we on the PC side are going running .MOV's through a 32-bit pipeline during decode?

I ask because Apple not having a 64-bit version of QT for Windows has been causing me a lot of grief when using Avid Media Composer and Boris Red on the PC. I was hoping Assimilate had found away around the QT's 32-bit limitation in Windows.

Peter,

I have not spoken to the developers about this, but I know that we certainly have not reverse-engineered Quicktime.

After giving this a try...something that occurred to me is what good is this tool if it cannot export out to various codecs? It has all of the color/monitor management tools, but no way to export? or am i missing something?

Hence the name Scratch PLAYer:-)
