  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCRATCH Play - a FREE tool from ASSIMILATE

After giving this a try...something that occurred to me is what good is this tool if it cannot export out to various codecs? It has all of the color/monitor management tools, but no way to export? or am i missing something?

What Jake said. ;)

It is not designed to be a transcoding/export tool. It's a player. What is the first thing *anybody* has to do once they have footage of any kind? They have to play it.

For many of the people on REDUSER, it honestly may be superfluous. Most of the people on this forum are professionals or semi-professionals who have spent a lot of time and effort figuring out and understanding different tools and workflows. After all, RC-X is free, and is a pretty bad-ass tool. But, by design, it is R3D-only.

SCRATCH Play is the start of something new. It is the alpha, but certainly not the omega. There is more coming. A lot more.

I agree with what you AND Jake have said....basically what can you expect from a $5 piece of software. BUT, if it were merely a player, WHY have all of the extremely well developed tools to color correct and also adjust your monitors etc...if the color work you are doing is for nothing?

I was not expecting something like this for free nor $5, but merely questioning WHY would i put hours of work into setting up monitors for perfect color correction and such elaborote color correction tools if i am only doing it for review onset. That is not good use of my time. I am merely asking WHY such elaborote tools? and then if they are there.....when will we see export capability....Otherwise this tool is of no use for me. Now it may be a great tool for folks working on set to show looks etc...but i guess if you are on such a set, why not have the full version ?

anyway, i am sure looking forward to see if this heads in the direction of exporting. And i also realize my needs are far different from most others and in fact down right selfish in wanting one program to do it all.

Thanks for replying Lucas....i do appreciate the explanations....and i hope you take my questions and replies in the spirit they are intended---which is purely inquisitive.

Scratch Play can't render footage, but it can export grades as CDL or various LUT formats. So it's useful for more than just review.

slow

slow

I'm trying to play some 5K R3D footage in Scratch Play, and it stutters at 1/4 debayer so I have to go to 1/8. Premiere and Resolve both play 1/4 just fine on my system. It's an octo-core Mac Pro, 32GB, GTX570.
