Schedule and Machined EPICs...

I am fairly sure that the number of hand built Epics will be limited to the low double digits.

For this reason, and the customer priority order, I would be shocked if anyone with a R1 serial number over #1000 has a chance of purchasing one of these.

I have no problem with this, but I just think those of your well above that line should not get too excited.

What happened to Tattoo? Did that start? I thought once Tattoo started it was 3 months before Epic Stage II..

As a customer who put a lot of money down for a deposit in May, I am confused about where this is headed.

First there were going to be Tattoos, then Stage II then Stage III. I haven't heard anything about Tattoo, unless I missed it.. I thought Epic was still in Alpha. Now hand machined cameras by December/January?

We learned from the 1st Tattoos that we needed to grow the length +13mm. We have made a second round of Tattoos that will go on projects and not be for sale. They were development models. +13 Tattoos can be used (and will be) but never sold. They showed us what needed to be done to finish for production. That leaves a gap. We can make the production cameras now (or very soon) but only by hand and with 100% machined parts which is very expensive. Tooling for production is out as is final boards for fabrication. We are building a production line in preparation for all the final parts and pieces to begin real production.

What else would you like to know? I'm at your service...

Good point ... and probably a little healthy dose of reality.

One can hope though, right?

Still holding hopes this option may be the answer for our new facility ... if we can't go Epic before opening we have to go with something else. As much as this pains me to think about :\

I'm sure you won't have much of a problem to sell those. It's nice to finally have a schedule for the next steps (even if this is subject to change). It will help make decisions on what projects can realistically be shoot on EPIC for the following year.

So a current non RED owner has no hope of getting one? Damn... just as the $Aus is doing so well against the greenback

Where do I wire the $45,000 tomorrow morning when the bank opens. I can think of no better black Friday deal than a $500,000 piece of technology, machined and hand-built by the best engineers in the business for only $45,000!

The complainers are crazy, RED has always set expectations about everything being subject to change. What they have done is nothing short of a miracle. You try it.

I'm calling it RED Friday if they give me the account number and accept my wire. Oh, and if I don't get mine till June because of unforeseen delays, you will not hear a single complaint from me. EPIC is from the future, if I get it in June 2011, I'll get it 5 years before I should have. Doesn't everyone understand that?

In regards to the firmware, where are you in development of enabling features?

Jim, I understand if you can't answer this question, but is there any change of plans regarding Scarlet S35? Perhaps having it releasing concurrently with the 2/3 systems or something else.

I think I speak on behalf of most indie filmmakers when I say that we are all patiently waiting for Scarlet S35 to equal or better film for a great price.

This is the camera that in my view will change it all.

Are the second round +13 Tattoo bodies identical in hardware to the first production cameras? Or are/were there more changes?

I think that this is an awesome idea. Filling the gap in between the +13 bodies reaching hardware completion to the assembly line firing up with handmade machined bodies is freakin' awesome.

Firmware is mostly done. There are only a couple of things left but we are close on those. Having said that, I'm quite sure we will find ways to add new things along the way... :-)

Jim, just a little confused. Correct me if I'm wrong... The "guts" are pretty much finalized but the "shell" cannot be mass produced yet, so you will custom produce some for those who are willing to pay extra, but if we can wait, sooner or later they will be mass produced and we can still trade in our reds on a "mass produced" epic at a lower price. Is that right?

Jim..i am still curious of EPIC more option. That's what i want to know

Jim, what accessories and modules will be ready to ship with the machined Epics? If we are going to pay approx. $55,000 to get a two month jump on our stage 2 Epics we need to know what kind of shooting package can immediately be put on projects.

Jim,

I think you put a lot of pressure on yourself, and it's probably why you are where you are right now. Just remember what happened to Howard Hughes.

Keep in mind that there are A LOT of Red customers that would like you to take your time and get Epic exactly as you want it.

If these hand built Epics will help you to iron out some wrinkles ... that is great.

IMHO ... What a lot of us are hoping for is a media solution as soon as possible. The introduction of the 1.8" SSD drives will fill a serious gap that now exists. I also believe this will help us to get the most out of our Red One cameras while we patiently wait for the best Epic your can put out there.

hard decision...but real good option
tks

Any guess on how long it will take to ship out all stage 2 epics?

Jim,do you expect Scarlet production to get rolling sometime soon after Epic?

Could the `special body`(i`m assuming they`re cnc billett) option continue when normal production gets going,Scarlet included? (sorry i gotta ask!)
