  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet is/was both slightly smaller and lighter than Epic. I seem to remember the brain being 8 pounds - could be wrong and even if I'm right it might have changed!

The bigger question for me is if I have a Scarlet, why would I bother to get an Epic?

As far as any information that has been disseminated, yes, that is correct.

And, I believe, Epic brain is (was?) around 5.5 pounds. With recent "tweaking" of size, that may have changed. Of course. :smile:
 
Leo, I think you missed my point.
What they did was legitimate from a pro acquisition point of view. Well done, beautifully shot.
What they didn't do was provide an example of something right out of the box with a 4/3rd lens that most people would be able to afford. Like most indy movie makers who are considering the camera.

I got the impression that they were saying as nice as the AF 100 is, you will need some serious kit to make it truly pro. Nothing wrong with that either.

Maybe had they used Canon or Nikon glass it would have more in line with what people are expecting, and the new Ki Pro Mini, something that would have kept the overall cost below 10K.

But none of those external recording devices and lens mount adapters are required to get excellent quality from anything Red makes. (View finder, yes, storage options, yes, but they are not needed to avoid 8bit 4:2:0 video)
Me personally, I'm like you, don't want or need 2/3" video camera. But there is a very large number of people who do. If it's a 2/3" Scarlett, they still won't need a Ki Pro or P2 Field recorder to get high quality footage. There will be options to convert to RGB, but only if your workflow requires it.

I hope I'm clearer on that this time. Sorry if I wasn't before. I'm sure the AF 100 will do well.
 
My gut tells me that for this particular setup for the AF-100 shoot, the quality of the lens had little to do with the outcome. The nice window lighting, something in the FG, and the subject, provided most of the "feel" of that footage. Once you have shallow DOF, I'm always surprised how any glass looks great.

On a side note: Was involved in 2 features with the Red. Both shot with very old Nikon still lenses. Footage was just beautiful. One lens was an old $85.00 micro from a pawn shop. Stuff looked great.

Unless you are referring to the Epic here, that is incorrect. On 5-22-10, Jarred confirmed that the Scarlet Fixed brain/lens (with no modules) was 4.5 pounds. Of course, that was then... :tongue_smilie:

Maybe All this hype on epic is misleading... maybe Epic was really only intended for the big production houses and for those who simply must have the highest resolution/most features/etc....

Maybe the scarlet line is for everybody else?

But I get the feeling that Epic is Jim's current "baby"... so I would expect perks for Epic owners of some sort... I'm sure Epic brains will get updated long before Scarlet brains....

I love how people keep bitching about the price... "wahhh... it's too expensive...wahhh". Try buying anything else with anywhere near the features... It's all been said before. Get over it. Go buy something else. The delivery date of Epic/Scarlet is out of your hands. Buying something else is not. Film makers have never had it so good. So many options.

I also love how you presume to speak for "most film makers". Whatever.

You have GOT to be kidding? I saw first hand the difference lenses make while trying to match 3 camera in on-line, all with the same setup, yet different lenses. And that was just on XD-HD.

The lense is the camera's portal to the world.... of course it makes a difference.

I would tend to agree.... Just watch 28 Days Later, shot on Canon XL1s with fuji hd lenses i believe?????

How much of an income do you think a self employed man, with a wife and 2 kids, undergoing chemotherapy every 2 weeks actually makes?

I never said it was easy to acquire a RED camera. You put words in my mouth. I said there were options available to you for less money than the RED.

Think about it next time before you shoot your mouth off. You just look like an ass.

Ok. I joined this forum because I can dream of making the movie the way I will want to make it. The question is when. I'm waiting for the Scarlet, then I'll shoot my movie.

Do I make movies for a living? No. Do I "shoot video" for a living? Yes.

So I am shocked at the sense of "entitlement" some readers have here. Jim Jannard and Jarred Land owe you nothing. I'll assume, and beat me up if you want, these guys, from the names, are from Eastern Europe. If they are not, its a shame because, with this attitude, you will "film" but you will not make films.

The fact there is a house to think of selling, means you are ok. If the projects are so important, remember you will spend 60% of your budget marketing it if you are to make money. If its for festivals, then its for you and other enthusiast. Maybe some screening fees but that's it.

For your information, if we are going to compare on hard standards of living, come to Kenya. Drop me a line when you do.

Or shoot the film.
