Why does everyone feel they need to OWN a camera to be a filmmaker?

I need to own a couple cameras because I am plan to shoot very long-term documentaries rather than planned-out-in-advance narratives. But I'm not complaining about the price… I'm doing what I have to do to set the funds aside.

Up until the RED ONE came out, the idea of buying a professional camera was almost unheard of, unless you were already making your living shooting. I mean, the cheapest cameras were in the near six figure range. Before that, you either had an 8mm camera, a (god forbid like I did) a VHS camcorder, or a 16mm camera like the Bolex.

If the price of Scarlet going up $1000 puts it out of your reach financially, then truthfully you probably weren't financially ready for it. I figured at minimum with the old price for the 2/3rd fixed I was looking at a bare minimum of $7000 to get up and running with all the modules, recording media, and post support that you would need.

This price increase probably puts the Scarlet out of my price range. $8K is about my budget, but looks like my car is only gonna last maybe another year. So, I have to hold on to that money for that. A year ago I bought a 7D, and it's fantastic. I've shot some great video with it. I've shot even better stills, and now I have a decent collection of Canon lenses. Plus I've been able to rent it out for a little bit of cash for videos like this one: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/de...ts-childhood-obesity?playlist=featured_videos

For location shooting large HMI's punched or bounced through windows are for fighting the sun but are also used for fighting clouds and the changing position of the sun throughout the shooting of the setup/scene...HDR will do NOTHING to solve those issues... you still need a geni and some 18k's to do it correctly HDR saves you no money in that situation.

I agree, and while I might have been a little too excited in my post hopefully you get my point. There's lots of reasons why you'd want to light, add quantity, dynamic range, consistency, artistically, change time of day, and on and on. HDRx may help with some of these, and it might not help at all with many of them. But what HDRx will do for SURE is you won't have to light for dynamic range and to me, that's worth way more than $1000 long term to anyone doing serious enough work to care about Scarlet at all.

Yes, you got it. When its zero profit margin on my art I play everything really close to the bone. And I'm a freelancer who pays US medical insurance for 4 because I support a family.
edit:
so when I justify an expense, I don't just have to justify it to myself but to my conscience because of those who depend on me. Can't just keep throwing money down a bottomless hole called filmmaking

Hey J,

I think the amount of time you spend here and learning others' sharing information, you should be able to start making more money, if you set yourself to that position. Three years ago, without RED ONE (I don't even own RED ONE still), I was providing FCP based system integration and some knowledge in handling 24p materials with the help of others from DVinfo.net, I experienced the first ever feature film job to provide HD editing system consulting. Then invested myself (I just paid up my loan this month!) to buy HPX555 so I can involve in actual production a lot more. I was just a videographer with FCP system shooting mountainbikes and music performance up to that point.

Then Frederic Lumiere informed me and got me involved on RED things and found out that there could be a dream land. I believed it and kept up with everything I could do, cherish more on my FCP based system then RED ONE came to Japan, I immediately started to provide RED post production workflow for TVCM shoot, music clips and there came the feature film jobs.

So, three years ago, I wasn't even in the cinema business. Now I'm involved in more than few feature films annually.

So, once you get your Scarlet $1000 more than you thought, start using it and appreciate the better features, you would change your mind about the $1000 difference, I'm sure. I know you can adopt it, I know.

night vision

night vision

We have decided to add $1000 to the price of Scarlet and include HDRx™ capability. The extra money will go to more boards and another ASIC plus development. The improvement is more than worth the effort. The image possibilities and capability are incredible.

We watched the voting, but more than that we know how much improvement HDRx™ is to the program.

It will only cause a slight delay in the program. You need to trust on this one...

Jim

Seems silly of me to ask...very silly in fact, but have you guys considered night vision for these cameras?? Seems like a cool addition/asthetic to a kick-ass camera. Or is all this talk about what our eyes can't see alluding to our inability to see in the dark...and therefore it works perfect it not low-light but no-light??? but seriously?

...

Lets say Canon released the Mark III with no aliasing or moire and shoots in a raw format or close to it for less than $2,500. Would Scarlet be worth the added price?

Please be sure to call me, no matter what time of night or day, when this actually happens. Better yet, buy one for me right there and I'll pay you back as soon as you can get it to me.

(Note: I am not holding my breath.) :001_smile:

I can assure you, you are not alone in any of these circumstances. Plenty of us do all the things you describe. Some of us just have a different perspective on the business practices of others; in this case RED.

You are right to NOT overspend when you are obligated to do right by your family. If a Scarlet is out of your price range, you owe it to yourself to purchase something else. :thumbup1:

Let's say that Arri released a camera that was 6K RAW for $1500. Or Sony had a new camera that was 4K RAW at 300 fps for $4K. Or that...

Jim

So Scarlet will need SSDs to perform in HDRx?

So Scarlet will need SSDs to perform in HDRx™™?

No. Because the image size is smaller, Scarlet 2/3" will work HDRx at some REDCODEs with CF. SSD will certainly offer more options, but CF will work.

This should ease some concerns.

So since CF won't offer all the options of SSD, will a Side SSD module be an option (or even standard) for Scarlet Fixed?

Asked another way, is there a chance we can swap out the side CF for an SSD from the Scarlet Fixed package and just pay the difference?

The side SSD module is part of the DSMC system so it will for sure work with the fixed Scarlet.

Ugh

Ugh

So this camera, which is already years late, is another $1k? For a feature most users of a low-end camera don't NEED?

You've moved the cost of the camera out of reach of most of the low-budget filmmakers who are going to the 7D w/Zoom while most of the posts here are all about the Epic.

I thought the entire idea of the RED was the low entry cost. Evidently the idea of a lower-entry-cost camera is out the window now.

No thanks

Buy a 7D Mr. Troll. And goodnight.

Most "Night Vision" is an IR light mounted on the side of the camera. Do you really want the camera made *more* sensitive to IR contamination?
