Scarlet...

thanks Jim and team this is an amazing step and once again shows how great of a company Red is.

For those saying that 1k extra has squashed their dreams of scarlet I have a few questions to ask them. What are they going to buy now, a far inferior camera for 1k less (or more?) and if adding 1k hits you so hard then it seems like you were stretching your budget in the first place to buy one. Maybe just maybe that means the camera is not for you, if you work in the field a few jobs should cover the price difference (one actually), and if you are just a hobbyist you really are in no rush so why not save up for that extra bit of time?

Really you can get just about anything you want if you put your mind to it, so how about not complaining and putting in the work to pay for it like the rest of us.

For now this is scarlet nothing else exists so complaining about the change (to me) is a waste of bandwidth and all of our time.

No offense meant we all have our own paths, have a good night and weekend.

keep on filming

Heh somebody forgot that this is not the first rise of a price.

Great news. This means the FF35 scarlet will almost certainly eventually get it too. If even the economy 'pocket' cam gets HDRx then the FF35 is all but inevitable. And at only a 25% price increase. Tack on an extra $3000 and I'm happy.

If the premium for EPIC seems excessive to some people, then obviously it's not worth it to them—to others, the EPIC will be worth the price for its advantages.

that's fine and dandy for you to say...but I've already made pre-existing purchasing decisions (Stage 2) based on the perception of what EPIC would be versus SCARLET (and SCARLET versus RED ONE, for that matter). It's easy to make these kinds of comments when you have no skin yet in the game.

I agree wholeheartedly that RED's mission should remain to make the best possible technology at the best possible price point. And putting this technology is SCARLET is their best possible move. It will ensure RED's future and allow the company to grow into a powerhouse, not just an upstart.

But it is increasingly unclear to me what my best possible move, for my own business, will be. A little bit perplexing, in light of this news.

Jim has done a phenomenal job of watching the backs of his early customers, and I feel he will continue to do so.

That's a totally valid point, and I do sympathize with you there. If I had had the money for the RED One I might have made some decisions I'd be regretting as well. : (

I don't regret my RED ONE purchases. Not one bit. It has been an excellent decision in every possible way. I'm just confused, moving forward.

Part of me is wondering whether it would be smart to back out of Stage 2, shoot my MXed RED ONE, and wait for the SCARLET...I already have a great camera, and it would save me quite a bit of money. And I'd still have plenty of overcranked RED ONE goodness. And an even smaller form factor with SCARLET, which I like. RED ONE could be an excellent 2nd cam to a SCARLET!

I'm not even sure if this is an option, to be able to apply my Stage 2 deposit towards a SCARLET purchase. But it would save me a bundle, and it's not as if I'd be waiting for a camera, like some of the SCARLET faithful.

I do believe Jim when he says production will ramp up quickly, so I don't think I'm going to have the time to ROI an EPIC before SCARLET'S release. I know it's been a long wait since the original SCARLET announcements, but honestly, I believe when this thing finally hits, it will hit hard. This team has learned a ton in a very short time. I know I'm in the minority on this view of their release, but I really don't think it will take that long to get these cameras out to the world, once they are ready (that part could still take awhile...)

This is why I'm concerned (among other reasons):

I think the chance of this new feature causing only slight delays is quite low. At this point I've resigned to never getting my hands on a Scarlet not because of price hikes (heck, in the extra development time $1000 should be easy to scrounge up), but because of the endless release date - new feature - development extension - release date cycle RED has entered.

As I've said before, the product has to be released at some point. There will ALWAYS be a newer and better feature to add, and the likelihood of discovering a couple each time you add development time is high. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't this the point of the modular system? As features change, simply swap out the brain. But if there's never a brain released to swap out... "Obsolescence Obsolete" takes on an entirely new meaning.

True that is very true----- but hey Supply and demand If demand increases and supply remains unchanged then higher equilibrium price and quantity.

If demand decreases and supply remains the same then lower equilibrium price and quantity.

If supply increases and demand remains unchanged then lower equilibrium price and higher quantity.

If supply decreases and demand remains the same then higher price and lower quantity.

In the mean time i am going to just shoot and wait to see what happen it may never come out but i will still have kept moving forward with or with out it (scarlet) I lose sleep from reading this website daily Day in Day out i am checking for a happy update just wake me up when it is ready and out the oven and hot and ready Peace...

Always late to one of these post; RED Team, thank you for working so hard on these cameras. $1,000 is not much when you are talking about a camera that should be worth 3-4 times the quoted amount.

The game is still in favor the early stage owners of the EPIC. Unlikely, will the Scarlet gravy train roll out the same time as the EPIC. Also EPIC owners will have early dibs at the Scarlet.

The Scarlet community will still need to wait a bit more for final pricing on the bod(ies) and accessories. There is still way too much dust flying around to have visibility.

The whole EPIC and Scarlet initiative at this moment is event, not time driven. Again, the take away from recent comments is that good solid progress is being made, but is still a white-knuckled situation.

Is this just for the S35, or does it include the 2/3" models?
This is a great present for scarlet's buyers. You give us an S35, 5K, 13-18HDRx™ Stops, PL/EF, for the prize of a high-end HDV.
Wait, maybe I missed something, but I thought that Jim was referring specifically to 2/3-inch Scarlet, not the S35, although I suppose he could've been referring to the whole line. Can we have clarification on this?

something different...

something different...

actually it`s the increasing complexity of epic&scarlet that kinda bothers me. all engineering aside -I know red`s working hard on best reliability, but I`m on a show now with another famous manufacturer`s cam and we replaced two of them in one (!) week...

i just want to know the real differences.. its a it keeps becoming a smaller and smaller leap from epic to scarlet, yet the prices are still the same big jump

Jim says that everything change in life..but this change surprised me a little, im keen to know how he will position the camera between Epic and Scarlet, I will keep on eye on the development and will decide when the time comes.

Big News

Big News

This is big news.
HDR for video is a big thing... it's huge.
And the fact that is will be available for Scarlet is awesome.
This is a feature that you will definitely want to have.
Good call!

Great but... the same EPIC HDRx???... then the SCARLET S35 can use all the modules and accesories, same sensor..., we are talking half FPS than a heavier & bigger EPIC??. I'm starting to reconsider my next move.

HDR wasn't a feature for either until a month ago.

Scarlet got more expensive and cut the price gap by $1k.

You always were told that the image quality between Scarlet and Epic should be the same.

Nothing has really changed. If anything it's changed to make Epic a better value. Everybody got an extra feature. How is that Scarlet getting a leg up? The same features that made Epic a possibly worthwhile investment vs scarlet are still the differentiating features.

Im thankful Red did take the decison to make the camera even better. In the long run whats another extra months of wait? compared to the the time we have been wating for the Scarlet it´t nothing.
Just think of being on set and expand the dynamic range when you need it! Still hoping to se another guestimate of realease.

I feel that Red is used alot like a quality stamp. Like this is a "Red production". Therefore it's still very good that even the lighter version of Red is still high end. Red is really changeing the industry! Thumbs up!!

Some one should make a song called. Red killed the videostar or something! By by video!
