  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

Are you aming to release scarlet before summer?

Because... the motions are soooo smooth compared to anything out there.

CMOS horizontal-motion in combination with

a) deep focus
b) some contrast (not neccesarily very high)
c) vertical lines

leaves a lot to be desired.

Different cameras have different "latitude" for these occations, and there's different things that make them freak out/collapse. But one are quickly boardering on these issuses.

The ASC panning advices are good, but CMOS's seems more flimsy and less universally predictable than film in this respect.

Robust horizontal motion without ugly artifacts is just... lovely?

Look at that fire-engine in the vegas-clip and the "too fast" pans over the house-corners, and try to recreate that with any camera you may have acces to...

People will get used to this too fast to even remember what it used to be like...

I'm with you on this one. I was watching the promo clips from the new GH2 and the motion blur for objects moving within the frame can only be described as " ethereal". Objects lose their sense of solidness and presence.

I also voted no. Mostly for the additional development time. But the Vegas shots were simply... EPIC.

Good news. The advantages are too obvious.

Like others asked, what about recording? Will this work 24p/25p to CF?

And then there are the extra boards... are they generic extra horse power, suitable for other tasks too? Will this up the frame rates? Or the maximum redcode?

I think this just added more value to my R1...

We have decided to add $1000 to the price of Scarlet and include HDRx™™™™ capability. The extra money will go to more boards and another ASIC plus development. The improvement is more than worth the effort. The image possibilities and capability are incredible.

We watched the voting, but more than that we know how much improvement HDRx™™™™ is to the program.

It will only cause a slight delay in the program. You need to trust on this one...

Until now I thought the essential difference between EPIC and S35 SCARLET
would be processing power and frame rates. Now you are saying you just doubled the processing power (and consequently frame rates) of Scarlet for 1000USD. I do not quite understand what will be the added value of an EPIC over a Scarlet after this change. Can you enlighten us?

You guys are so bloody clever, you're too smart for yourselves. Thank the dear lord for that!

I want these cameras out the door as soon as possible and as cheaply as possible but Magic Motion™ will be worth it all IMHO. Also, as I can see myself shooting under HDRx mode all the time, this will allow Scarlet footage to cut with Epic - on of the basic ideas behind the modular Brain approach in the first place.

Why's it so important, Gunleik?

Because it looks so freakin' beautiful. Digital never quite flowed like film. From the little I've seen so far, and examining the individual frames, I think this will flow better than film. Never thought I'd see the day.

A thousand dollars for what? six more stops? That's just over $180 per stop. That's pretty damn cheap!

Two months ago people were justifying the price of Alexa by bragging it had half a stop more than R-1 MX. :eek6:

A number of people have been dropping hints that we've only actually seen the tip of the iceberg in EPIC features. Jim has actually told us they're not telling anymore, because the competition is listening too. Not sure why HDRx is an exception, keeps our enthusiasm going, to be sure.

And whichever way you look at it, EPIC will be capable of handling about one order of magnitude more data. That costs real hardware.

This is still really cheap for such a high-end camera. RED is pushing the limits for what's possible.

Motion HDR in a camera for under $10.000 is just astonishing anyways.

The DR news are important to communicate to the competition, maybe?

I think this is the end of Scarlet (Fixed 2/3") for me. I started the dream with the Scarlet 3K for $3K. I had no problem with the extra features and money when it went to $4.750. But I was already at $8.600 with the extra features (Module Adapter, SDD Module 1.8", Red Station 1.8", RED Mag 1.8" 128GB). And I thing this extra $1.000 is just the end. I still hope I can explain this extra, but...
I'm happy for all you guys how will have fun with it. Enjoy and keep on creating great movies.

Well I am sorry to tell I have the same problem.
It won't be my dream camera anymore ...

Guys, those extra 6 stops are gonna save you much more than 1000$ on every important job in time and lighting stuff. And, with the delay Scarlet will have, you are sure to be able to get those 1000$.

I think it's quite frivolous to say that a complete camera with 18 stops for least than 10.000$ is not a dream camera anymore. Well, you could always get a 5D MkII with good lenses for a bit less the half of that price...

Come on, cheer up!

Seems this decision has caused a few to drop out of the "owning a Scarlet" club. But for me it means I will be joining the club at whatever future date I become able to add it to my arsenal. If a camera has HDRx, I want that.
