  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X Rentals

I'm not joking and I'm already volunteering my time, along with my gear! With regard to interning at a high school, we appreciate the advice but, despite it working for you for so long, it isn't necessarily the best choice for the rest of us. :) In the meantime, I'll compete in my market as hard as I can. If someone offers me a rental fee, great. If not, I'll make lemonade.

Sounds like you have the work ethic, hopefully you'll find clientele that respect what you do (be it an employer, client or partner).

I hope you bring a contract and SHOW THEM FULL price and let them know this one is on you, have them SIGN a waiver of liability,
and the next job is full rate. That way, they understand what you charge when they need you.

Another tip, there's no such thing as free lunch, especially when it comes to business.
Sometimes lemons simply rot, and nobody drinks spoiled lemonade for long...

My 2 cents, best wishes...

Verry nicccee. That a 19mm rod setup?

Don't get me wrong, I would love to charge for my gear; I just can't find anyone willing to pay for it. Until I do I bring it for free or I don't move forward.

that one sentence will end your business.

I get the rates I ask for because as a business owner, I express to my clientel why they need to pay for gear, and why the premium price is worth it.

Before commiting to a $15k piece of overhead, you should reconsider your business model, and ask why noone will pay for gear.... its 90% because you keep bringing it for free.

Thats a sweet deal with that glass.

I'm hoping to get about $500 for my Scarlet kit (lenses, tripod, rails, follow focus, etc etc) plus myself as either a DIT or a DP for another $250 or so. I'm gonna try that out for a while and see how it works. There are only like 4 Red Ones in Louisville and one Epic so hopefully that'll be pretty competitive. I expect that I'm probably going to be around the same price as some of the Red One guys, but the fellers who own the Epic are way above and beyond my level and do great stuff.

It's like, if you're shooting a commercial or something that can be done in one day, $750 is nothing to guarantee BEAUTIFUL images. I'll come up with some multiple day rates. I expect I'll mostly be using the Scarlet on my own projects though.

Icant believe what im reading!

You only value your skills et at $250? The camera is worth more than you!? no way! I mean the market is the market, but there is NO way a camera package is more expensive than a Director of photography......

So nobody finds it strange that people that own 1 Scarlet would rent it out at all. They have names you know! Just like in real life, the "baby" and its "father" are a package!!!

No, why? The Scarlet is a tool not a real person.

Totally agree, the DOP is worth more!

I don't own an equipment rental business and my camera isn't a "piece of overhead." I confess I dont know what that is although it sounds dirty :). I will use my camera to shoot with. I'm just a camera guy trying to make it, as unpopular as that may make me here.

Oh man, its not about popularity, I want you get what you deserve. You're a creative individual. Your rate is what the client is paying you for your ideas, artistry and know how. :) I want you to suceed!

I appreciate that. This camera is meant to help me leverage a better reel and client list. As they both get better I look forward to being able to charge for my gear and get some lovely lenses like yours.

This thread is depressing.

Guys, charge fair rates.

By bringing a Scarlet kit for free or charging $250 a day for yourself as the DP(!!!!) you're only hurting yourself in the long run. Not to mention annoying every other DP/shooter in town that then has to explain (after the client has dumped you) why $1,000 a day for equipment and operator is more than fair.

On projects that I produce and direct, if a camera op, DP, whoever quotes me a rate that is too low, I don't take them seriously. I know there's a catch: either they don't have a clue what they are doing and are generally inexperienced, or they run a poor business. Either way they aren't someone that I'd like to do business with, especially in a key position like DP or cam op.

If on the other hand, you have the skills to command $1,000 a day (but are just too worried about getting the job, so you undercut the competition), do it! You will weed out the cheap producers, and find yourself working with a higher caliber of crew on better and better productions. Sounds crazy, but it's true.

The people hiring you because you're cheap will never be the people that bring you on for high paying work.

Starting out or not, you need to respect yourself and your work, because producers are just looking for a reason not to.

110% true....

Its hard... i did this 4 years ago. i shook off the "deadbeat" clients that only paid me bird feed. It was tough at first, but by working really hard on the big jobs i got i wound up getting hired more and more with them.

You are judged not by your action but the company you keep.
