  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X Packages in NYC - Starting at $250.00 a day with lenses

Free I can live with.

Ouch man...Do some market research and get work from experience and word of mouth.

Still better than Colorado though. I was on a project until some guy with a Scarlet offered up there camera for free....

I predict a scarlet for sale........ or broken.....

Especially "No insurance needed" .... Seriously? good luck with that.

To those who are concerned I have undercut the rates of the industry, these discounted rates are only available during my initial two months of business and will be raised thereafter.

Clients who do not have production insurance are required to hire an onset assistant who will ensure the safety of the equipment.

. . . said the film merchant to the digital industry customer 3 years ago. Everything changes boyz - you are the new film guy so get ready for brutal competition which sorts by lowest price.

charming and witty as that sounds I beg to differ...its sorted not byprice but by knowlege, talent, and support. price bending is short lived especially in this industry that doesnt take lightly to downtime, and technology that inherently capricious does just that from time to time and a producer need get burned once before going back to a more rounded rental situation with backup cameras and proper technicians.

Boys, you're tough with your friend... Christopher, if you feel alone and have nothing to do in September, just come to France with your beloved Scarlet ;-)

In NYC, when your doing private rentals you need to compare to the lowest priced rental house and go from there, which would be CSI. Your cheapest $250 package is close to their $599 cheapest package gear wise, and you included lenses for free. So just looking at the price and gear, it's really undercutting the rest of the industry.

Ah yes...the Walmart pricing strategy that targets 'mom and pops' - chase the competition out then gradually raise the price as the market bears. Smart business!

good luck getting clients to pay that raised rate.

Regardless of how angry these kinds of posts make me, it's nice to know someone out there that will scoop up all the low-budget productions that want to shoot RED on a DSLR budget....you can have theses jobs, and deal with their workflow issues after the fact at no extra charge, or try to get a production that only had 250/day for camera and lenses to shell out the thousands it will translate into time wise to deal with their footage.

As I see it, there is plenty of work out there for all of us. Only a portion of this work is truly professional (in my book, just cuz it pays don't mean it's pro) and that is the only portion I am interested in. This is a great package/rate for film students and dudes that shoot wedding vids I will be sure to send ALL the gigs that cannot afford us his way.

True that man. True that. Everyone has their niche. The only thing about low rates that bother me is that many people get burned using cheap-low quality/low skill/bare bone kits (And I don't mean that Christopher is any of those, but I am speaking in general), and then those people are afraid to work with the camera again because they had a bad experience. Happens all the time. For me personally, I have NEVER had a RED go down on set, or at least I've never had a problem I couldn't resolve fairly quickly. Other people seem to have the worst luck, but honestly I feel that the majority of the issues are with the people using the camera/aftermarket aks/insufficient support.

Its a competitive market. Rates are all over the place. People usually come to me because they know I have everything they need, and the proper support and knowledge to back it up. The caveat is I'm not cheap. But really like some other people said, I don't want to get hired by the people who think that paying $250 to their camera gear and camera guy is acceptable. I've done enough WSHH videos ;) LOL

My gosh, this thread got a bunch of people running around like their hair caught fire, what they don't realize is this is just another facet of the new (RED) world order. Calm down everyone, maybe now is a good time to review your business models...

All I will say is this, if the plan is to attract new clients, you will certainly attract low rent, uneducated clients. The truth is the higher you value yourself and your work, the higher other will value it too.

Now there is nothing wrong with giving a good deal.... But publicly giving It away is foolish.

Yes ;-) In fact it's always funny to see that the people who think that competition is a great thing and can't thank Red enough to give them the opportunity of owning a 4K camera no other manufacturers dared to release are the same people who don't like this competition when it applies to themselves ;-)

This is just hypocrisy : a lot of pros are already dropping their prices - not publicly, and when the Blackmagic camera and other FS700/1D-C will be released, things will even get harder.

You have to distinguish the rental part of the gear and the salary of the operator/dop/dit when negociating. And of course adapt those rates to the kind of project you're involved in.

Is everyone going to continue renting out incomplete packages, no battery or media to run all day? Why did Red set this precedent with the awful kits... Even Adorama is playing this game now.

My plan has worked well so far, paying off 30,000 worth of gear in three months time.

Never announce public rates. Distinguish yourself through passionate commitment to the job: setting up the package for exactly what they need, subrenting if need be. Fix on set issues or mistakes with lightning speed--I once sent a courier to Liberty Island with a new redmag reader. Replaced before client needed to download.

Cater to a narrow base of solid connections, people you trust. Charge a high rate for commercials, a low rate for editorial projects, and a standard rate for everything else.
