SCARLET X European order: huge price difference

I agree with Benoit; ordering from Red Europe (UK) is very interesting as a European buyer.
First, the UK has a lower import tax than e.g. the Netherlands, and Red UK is taxed over their inter-company purchase price, i assume.
It's around a 10% increase and that's not bad when you live in Spain or the Netherlands, where we pay 20% at least if we attempt to import ourselves.
Don't forget the European service (and repair centre) that comes with it!
No, i don't think it's a bad deal.

UK Prices include freight, insurance and import duty to the UK (EU)
Digital cameras, sadly, are not zero rated across the board - it depends upon the cameras capabilities;
Classification of the product is a complex issue and RED has experts who have spent considerable time establishing the correct duty tariffs for all of our products.
It's not possible to use a simple calculation to establish the UK price since the import duty varies from product to product.
Once the goods are sold by RED Europe, they are in 'free transit' within the EU.

With regards VAT - we must charge VAT to all UK based customers at the prevailing rate (currently 20%)
For EU customers who are not UK based, if they have a local VAT registration number, the tax is waived.

Dear Alan, when you say "local VAT registration" referred to in the record of our country.
For example, I have a local VAT number in France for this reason I am not obliged to pay VAT in UK but if I have to pay in my country.
But you can only do this if you are self employed.

Is this correct?

very grateful

Alan, could you comment on the delivery to Croatia. Since Croatia is not a part of EU will Scarlet be delivered directly form US?
I see it like this.
If Scarlet will be delivered from UK to Croatia then there should not be any UK (EU) import duties on the invoice - since Scarlet destined for Croatia should be considered as temporary import to UK and as such bare no import costs.
All import duties are to be payed in Croatia by me.

Marko,

Product sold from the UK has been imported to the UK and taxes have been paid.
We are not in a position to temporarily import goods for further distribution beyond the EU

Manuel,

If you have local VAT registration and a valid number, you do not pay VAT in the UK or your own country when you bring the goods in from the UK.
That is the intra EU country agreement.

On the other hand, the European government film boards give out money more easily (and they seemed to have the good taste to give Ruairi money, which I support :) - so I guess one taketh awayeth, the other hand giveth... eth?

You could say that, on the other hand.. if you buy a new red camera from the states and ship to the UK (paying your £6k VAT etc as I did), and its faulty, these are the two scenarios that can unfold:

1) It goes back to the US, they fix the problem and return the "now working" camera

2) And the other scenario.. Red need to replace the entire camera because its not fixable (unlikely, but..).. and you get to pay import duty all over again

My point is, the UK government DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BRITISH BUSINESS, film, its own citizens, human rights or freedom. Their logic is banal and twisted on every level. Dont be fooled. They are murderers and sponsors of war, who are interested in maintaining whatever they decide is the status quo, always maintaining plausible deniability. One day they'll lead us all into the sea to die.. but it wont be their faults, it'll be ours for following them

If you think they do care.. er.. enjoy your fools paradise, history is over rated anyway

But you're right Bruce, there does need to be more voices heard.. just not on camera import issues right now.. first we need to disassociate ourselves with those other immoral murdering gangsters that are your government and make some real trade links instead of all this maddness :emote_head_explode:

How is trade between north and south america these days? I know "fair" isn't the right word, but I hear the unions on both sides are waking up and joining forces :grouphug: .. against the common enemy, cheating and lies

Haha, yeah - why do you think that Canon has 30min recording limit on DSLRs?
And Sony disabled Analog In -> DV recording in their consumer DV camcorders (because they would get classified as VCRs if they did).

You guys in Europe need to get together politically and vote this nonsense out :)

If only that was the case!

Ruairi was sponsored by the Irish Film Board... before their economy took a nosedive because of the Euro.

UK film industry funding is terrible - the current Government have axed the majority of funding for the Arts... from small community funded schemes right through to the main Film Commission bodies... it's all pretty bad. Their take is that arts/media is OK and they don't need to help/cultivate young talent etc. Plus we're still not getting decent tax incentives for the film industry.

But that's a whole other discussion :)

In terms of this thread, if it's an extra fee for 'landing/import' etc that's the way it goes... that's not Red's fault - and it's all deductible/offset-able anyway if you're running a business.

We pay almost £ for $ on most things like an AF100(AF101) in the UK is £3,475 plus 20% VAT = £4,170 vs $4,795 (2,977.76) in the USA. Obviously, we can claim VAT back (20%) if we're business registered (and this involves a bit more book-keeping), but, generally, we really loose out on the $ to £ thing - often having the same dollar price will be what we end up paying in sterling. It's a PITA.

So we loose out by import duties/taxes/VAT and then struggle with a price that ignores the currency markets and is $ to £ (or $ to Euro).

Not saying Red are doing this (thankfully!), they're just adding duties/shipping/insurance etc - it still means a price disparity, but it looks like they're not trying to squeeze profit out on the conversion to other currencies (a practice followed by Canon, Sony & Panasonic et al).

Hi there, as I checked my recent Scarlet order online, I noticed that the package was canceled and instead all single items were listed with GBP pricing. Now, the SCARLET-X AL CANON MOUNT PACKAGE is 9645 GBP - roughly 15.500 USD - instead of the announced pricing of 14.015 USD.
Can somebody please explain this? Thanks! Thomas

That's enough for a plane ticket across the pond. What the hell, might as well visit the US and pick up your camera.

In France, it's (still) 19,6 %. Do you apply UK VAT or France VAT if we order from France as a private user ?

Thanks, Alan and everybody for the valuable input. Still I think that RED should post European pricing on the store website so people know exactly what they are charged before ordering. I am happy to pay the higher price because it is justified alone by the presence of a european service center. Now, let' s cross our fingers that we will have a scarlet christmas!

What I also don´t understand is where my PL mount is hiding - I switched from Canon to PL via mail and got confirmation that the order has been changed - but now I got the same listing as the original poster with no PL in sight. It would be nice to have an official RED person on here explain the situation as we Europeans seem to have lost the package pricing (that would explain the difference) and our current order is not reflected correctly :/

For anyone working out VAT.. I use this site to make it quick and easier:
http://www.crazysquirrel.com/index.jspx

and cautionary tale....
My friend flew to america to buy his custom-shop PRS guitar (specifically to avoid VAT). He brought it back, was stopped and the guitar was assessed and valued, and then he was hit with a rather large bill.
Sometimes it isnt always as simple as buying it in one country and bringing it home as carry-on ;)

Also if you crosses borders often, the customs can ask at any time for valid VAT/import papers, especially if you travel with professional items.

Marko,

Well... I assume then, at least, that orders to countries such as Croatia, or in my case Switzerland with low taxes, won't be involuntarily dragged through UK customs? I would never accept that. Much more out of principle than any price increase...

Certainly RED can accommodate world wide shipping, or if the customer benefits from it, offer shipping through RED UK.

Customs are red hot on kit coming in and out of the UK. If you fly to the States and bring it back with you and get caught you will not only pay the duty & VAT but a fine as well. Everytime you then take the camera out of the country you face the same risk. I usually always do a Carnet but have had kit confiscated at Heathrow where I have not done one and had to go back to the airport with invoices to prove VAT has been paid.

In the event of your camera going back for repair you couldor bundle it mwith all the invoices to show VAT has been paid. The likelihood is though you won't need to as when it comes back it will have the repair invoice with it rather than a bill of sale.

Worth remembering if you are in the UK and buying secondhand that you have a copy of the VAT receipt as if the VAT was not paid on the original bill of sale you could be liable for it. On the original new price not the secondhand one. A painful bill for you to chase the previous owner with.

to make things easy

we sell also world wide , let me share the VAT issues:

if you are outside the EU you do NOT have to pay the local UK vat since it is tax free , red uk has then to ship the items with a courier so they have proof the goods left the UK to a country outside the eu. Pickup is therfor NOT possible (this counts also for a normal consumer without vat)

if you own a business inside the EU and you have a valid VAT number (red can verify this here :http://www.vatcheck.eu/), red can ship this to you also with a courier , pickup is NOT recomended since RED can then never proof the goods have actualy left the UK , and RED could be forced by home office in the uk to pay the VAT afterwards..
last but not least if i was selling these camera,s i wanted to check if you also acualy own the vat number by having you send out the purchase order and indent papers from that company.

Trick : if you are inside a european country wich has less VAT then the UK and you are a customer without a vat number (consumer)
try to find a company who can do the purchase for you , and he can then sell it to you for the local VAT.

Germay 19%
holland 19%
belgium/france 21%
norway/swiss /east europe (some countrys) no vat
