  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The standard Scarlet zoom will begin at 28mm (still full frame 35mm reference). We do plan on having a double asphere add-on to the front of the built in lens to take that much wider. There are many ways to do an add-on lens... cheap or good. We'll do the "good" kind.

sounds awesome. the more I'm hearing about this camera the more I'm liking it! Thanks, Jim and everyone, for the updates and info.

Thanks for clearing up and hopefully putting an end to the seemingly endless threads on this subject.
Any comment on the ergonomics of the camera? Soccer Dads and Moms aside, since moving to smaller cameras I have to say that (as I am not a spring chicken)though I appreciate the light weight, I find I have to add rails and handles and I currently at least still find them front heavy and awkward to shoot hand held . I do it, since a big part of my gig is "run and gun" but wish there was a better way than hanging a counter weight off the back of the 24"rails.

28mm "still full frame 35mm reference"... as in an 18mm lens on 35mm cine camera / RED ONE?

Therefore a 7.2mm focal length for the wide-angle end of a 2/3" lens?

hello mr mullen and nice to meet you. Just wondering with the current Scarlet specs, how well will be the DOF. Of course there's still the subject of distance, aperture etc. Im wondering with the sensor, iris opening and the 2/3 inch,
how's the DOF.

Ha, that's great!
I already carry around a wide angle adaptor on my Caplio GX100. Really nice for landscapes ;-)
Feels like someone blended my GX100 and Canon TX1 together.

Finally, an answer for the one question that has boggled my mind since the announcement. 28mm slr (like others I guess 18mm S35)... times 8... 18-144 S35 equivalent...

That's it... I'm sold... I mean at least one of the cams is sold... to me... when it arrives... Now I can go and save up the money needed to get this little wonder. Working along on HDV-compressed 1080p happily knowing that 3k raw is on the way... I've spent far too much time on this forum waiting for lens-length confirmation...

The problems of todays Industrialized Countries ("dagens i-landsproblem" as we say here in sweden)... it's been what? 3 weeks since official NAB announcement... I remember when I was happy reading tech-news in the newspaper, filtered through several writers and miss-understandings and delayed for months... Now I get a live feed from the makers themselves instantaneously... and now is the time where I'm irritated about delayed confirmations... What an impatient world I'm living in...

Are we there yet? :)

EDIT: somebody please pin this thread at the top and give it a topic like "official lens specs!"

28 X 8 + asphere2 =

.

Makes me 90% happy....

Something like 5.0 to 5.5mm on the wide end would have suited me more, but was always unlikely given the range the lens had to cover while trying to suit everybody shooting everything.
Very pleased to hear that Red is working on their own WA adaptor though, as that gives by far the best chance of making the optics compromise work.
It "only" needs to be up to resolving clean to 1080p for me.....
:calm:

A lot of "young" and "newbie" DP/Cinematographers here at the forum
(mostly they want to infiltrate themselves in the businesses shooting commercials)
are excited about to shoot WIDE ANGLE.

They should look and learn something about shooting and desiring
WIDE from the following FourThirds examples below:

"●Perspective
Perspective refers to the appearance of distance between a nearby subject
and faraway subject (the visual effect expressing the distance between them).
With a wider-angle lens, the image sizes of nearer subjects increase and
the distance of the background is exaggerated. A telephoto lens, on the other hand,
compresses distance so the distance between the subject and background is lost.

●Image magnification
Magnification is the value representing the size of the image of a subject captured
by the image sensor compared to the actual size of the subject. The magnification
at which the subject image is largest is referred to as the maximum image magnification.
For example, an image sensor that can capture the image of a subject in life size
has 1x magnification, while an image sensor that can capture the image only
at half size has 0.5x magnification. Image capturing with a high magnification
is usually possible with a macro lens, but it is also possible to increase
the magnification of an existing lens with a simplified method using an extension tube or teleconverter.

(Note)
The maximum image magnification of a Four Thirds lens can be converted into the
maximum image magnification of a 35mm film camera lens by
multiplying "the indicated maximum image magnification x 2".

●Difference between focusing distance and working distance
The focusing distance is the length between the focused position of the subject
and the image sensor, and the working distance is the length between the focused
position of the subject and the front of the lens. This means that, when the focusing
distance is identical, the working distance is smaller when a lens with
a larger overall length is used."

It's all subjective, but for me, with those shots of the swan statues, the first image is the only interesting composition.

Just imagine to pan around that swan in the widest angle (7mm).

It is all about to get DIZZY.

Also it is not about how a human sees in normal or working daily conditions.

An entertainment is all about another conditions...

Jannard I'm getting a bit confused by all the difference references on here.

I'm not sure what the difference is between 35mm equivalent and S35mm equivalent.

Can I assume that the lens will be 28-224mm as standard then (35 mm stills equivalent) and 56-448mm as teleconverted?

At the end of the day I know what a 35mm still lens shows at different distances and provided what I see on film is the same as what I'd see from a stills, I know what we're talking about in magnification here.

Also, will a teleconvertor be built in is it it going to be a pay for extra - I'm just bearing in mind that quite often teleconvertors can be expensive as extras and the camera is a little short as standard in long end zoom. :).
