Ok! So it's been about a month since my w landed, and I still don't have a clue as to when I will be able to work with the r3d redcode in adobe. So far I have been able to view the prores in premiere, and I hear about a "beta" version of premiere that works.. Is there someone I should be calling? RED support? Adobe?

Wait... My Scarlet-W is delivering today and I have a paid shoot tomorrow... Are you saying that Adobe doesnt support Scarlet-W files?... They should just be the same .r3d that the weapon and epic put out just 5k no?

im not an expert and dont own the camera but just going by all the posts on reduser, apparently the r3d files are not compatible with any editing software yet.
yes this is a problem. i had to switch from a weapon to an alexa last week due to this. hopefully it gets fixed soon.
some people report the prores files do work in fcpx, but that is it.

What is the error when trying to import footage to your project?

They don't open in Adobe or FCPX, but you can run transcodes out of RedCine-X. Might defeat the purpose of shooting R3D if you're handing it off to someone that doesn't know that, but just keep it in mind.

In general, I use redcinex for the first six or so months when a camera comes out, till the various packages update their raw reader. prores 444 at 1080p is probably the best export option from redcine for most new redusers. i use openexr dwb, but i wouldnt recomend that for new redusers.
can you link the prores transocde back to the raw files for color grading?

I can now open R3D in FCP X with the beta software that I mentioned above. I think the problem was that the clips were all showing 0:00 time duration and then they would not import (computer thought they were empty). Seems to work fine with the new beta software released on 3/18/16. I have a Scalet -W and just tried it today. FWIW I was in the first batch released about a month ago, but the camera just sat there since I could not get power to it (no base or V-locks available). I finally decided to get a jetpack which are in stock and a battery belt clip, and they just arrived yesterday. The installed firmware, nor upgraded firmware would read R3D files into FCP X (no problem with prores of course). Today I found and uploaded the beta workflow installer, and then could import the R3D files that I previously created but could not read in FCP X. I suspect these would also work in Adobe, but not sure.

Coming very, very soon.

Coming very, very soon.

Phil, I have been working on a shoot with the "w" for this project and have been keeping the producers happy with prores for now... But we are about to start serious post "very, very soon" are we talking days? Or weeks?

It's been a month already?! Wow.

Outside of my constant nagging, including an email today, I can't do much to help. But I replied here:

I feel no real need to defend Adobe (and yes many have criticized the subscription model), however, in the last 7 months there have been 4 major updates to Premiere Pro CC and there's a new update on the way. RED Weapon .R3D support was in the September 2015 update if I recall correctly.

The general pattern is a new release build approximately every two months at this point (July, September, November, January, etc...). The last major release dropped 01.27.2016. I would expect support for Raven, Scarlet-W, and Weapon 8K to come in the next build which I'm anticipating to be at the end of the month, though I'm obviously not certain.

And full disclosure, I am involved with the beta and used the beta to cut my Weapon 8K piece last month.

There are a lot of moving parts to software updates, development, testing, and SDK roll outs. Scarlet-W started shipping very, very recently and Raven ships this month along with a few more 8K Weapons. Hopefully by April all of that will be usable in the Creative Cloud applications. Specifically the big three: Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and After Effects.

A month is not a long time to wait to have any company test things out and release it, despite production pressures. They are indeed working on it and will release the update as soon as it's ready.

Frustrating for sure, but I assure you it's happening faster in this camp than many other camps right now.

And it will be included with the next update.

Been renting cams because of this, unfortunate reality of a new camera that isn't out in full force.

Excited to really dive in when premiere updates.

Matt, the pro res don't work for me either. I wonder why yours do.

I don't get it. Why would a new release be needed for Weapon, or Scarlet-W or any other new camera shooting 6k-or-below R3D?

Really? That's strange, how are the W files different than Epic Dragon files?? Same sensor I thought. I can edit Dragon files no problem in Premier CC

I'm surprised by this as well, but also kinda stoked to hear it. When Dragon came out it took some change to make that footage work... and things got better. Maybe the Weapon series requires some positive tweaking as well. Maybe nothing that is jolting, but an imaging improvement that is subliminal.
