  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W has Begun...

I got this email 25th September 11.40 AM:

Hello Max,

Thank you for your order - RED RAVEN™ Jetpack Package Deposit.

Your web order for RED products has been transferred to RED Europe Ltd for delivery from here. NO PAYMENT WILL BE TAKEN UNTILL THE INFORMATION BELOW IS CONFIRMED.

But I got my Card number confirmed 3.54 PM on the 25th September. Got the deposit invoice 4.07 PM.

I did a switch to scarlet-w package December 14th.

not been allocated yet. Does anyone know if I'll be getting my shipment from Europe and what the time for shipping is? I've read it's 2-3 weeks but that sounds a bit too much.

First footage I shot with my Scarlet-W since receiving it 2 weeks ago. I was able to borrow a Base Expander from a Weapon body. Still waiting on my own modules though.

I think the grading on some shots looks better than others... some have pretty blown out highlights (like the last shot, all the water on the right, no way to pull that back?). Maybe it's just more contrasty than I like it. Some of the shadow areas on the dog look funny. Maybe due to YouTube? I usually try not to judge too harshly with YouTube compression. Hopefully the 240fps stuff can get a little cleaner or clean up with noise reduction. YouTube compression didn't do those shot any favors, lots of dancing little squares! haha

looks great Brian! was the 240 shot in best possible compression?

Yup, 8:1. To me, 2k 240 fps is not usable. I still wanted to try it out though.

Yeah, I didn't do any post noise reduction or post sharpening. I'm sure with a little post work it can be usable, but I would still limit my camera to 120 fps at 4k, which looks fantastic. Those dancing squares and noise are present in the R3D files as well, I think it's just a limit of the sensor when it's cropped down that much from 5k to 2k.

The high contrast was kind of the whole idea of the video, I wanted to see how it performed in less than ideal lighting scenarios and push the sensor and see what I can save/recover. Last shot of the water is very blown out, though I don't know if there's any camera that could handle the high reflectance of the water while keeping the shadows of the water. HUGE stop differences. In an actual shooting scenario, I just would avoid shooting at that time of day, or throw in the Skintone-Highlight OLPF and help with the highlight roll-off. I definitely could have graded it and exposed it much better as well, I can post the R3D file if anyone is interested in playing with it too.

Here's a little before/after screencap I've been posting around the web with this video. In the car, Oliver was very underexposed, but I was able to bring him up quite nicely.

Awesome, thanks for posting these pictures.

Hope I wasn't too harsh with my comments! I definitely recognize that it was a really harsh shooting condition. Bummer to hear that you don't think 240fps is very usable... I used to use the FS700+7Q for a while and the 240fps was pretty good, although it did have some aliasing issues.

Not a problem at all man, no offense taken! I always like criticism that allows me to look back and re-analyze, which I did with that last clip.

I went back and checked it out, and there definitely was some highlight detail that I lost just in the grade. Definitely over-did it with the amount of contrast. I guess that's what I get for a 2 minute color grade :D

And I'm sure everyone will love to see that nasty ND tint..

Brains are being allocated more quickly due to accessory availability. That's the only downfall with getting a package around when something launches, the package has to ship complete, not in separate orders. That's why you have not received an allocation yet. I believe the 'end of March' timeframe was for brain only customers who switched to W.

Brent said in the March thread that the plan is to have brains & packages allocated by EOM for switchover preorders. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the next couple of weeks plays out. I'm an early November raven order that switched to S-W, so if I do get allocated by EOM, then it should be a decent indication of their push out rate.

hahaha perfect gif

Brian, an R3D would be awesome! What NDs were you using? I bought some screw-on Firecrest NDs, but for my 4x5.65s I've got a mixed set of Schneider and Firecrest. Do you know if the Scarlet-W has the same IR pollution at high ND that Dragon had?

I used a Schneider Platinum IR ND 1.5. According to Shane Hurlbut, you don't need IRND's with the Standard OLPF, but I have yet to test it (source: https://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2015/11/reds-game-changing-olpf-filter-cinematography/)

I do not see him commenting on packages....

I'd jump on the chance to get a small sequence of the 240 fps footage to see if the noise can be tamed in Resolve. I'm curious how the 3K crop would look as well since you can get up to 200 fps at 2.4:1 at 3K I think.
