  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W has Begun...

Kind of shocking, but the Switronix XP-L90S DO NOT WORK.

So not even the ones in the FAQ work properly.

These were the ones I was considering purchasing, so I guess that's off the table.

Can you clarify if they physically don't work, or just the electronic percentage readout?

jordan, no hidden meaning there, trust me.

We are also going to get ins some additional batteries to test with both on fit and properly powering the camera.

Hi Brent, I live about 1/2 way between Red Hollywood and Red Irvine. I'd be happy to bring in my Bebob V150s to be tested for compatibility if you'd like. Ordered from Germany and my return window is about to end, so love to see if they work.

I would wait on us rolling out that new beta firmware they are working on before doing your tests, if I was you. Brittany from RSH will be sending you a PM if you want to pop by...

Hey Brent

Thanks for the reply.

So just asking for a ballpark guess, when do you think all of the preorders will be allocated?

Thanks Brent. You ROCK!

BC, we are all over it. Engineering has already found a few things we will be rolling into a beta firmware release. This should resolve the camera thinking the battery is at 0% and initializing power down sequence (ie, your current issue). Hopefully, everyone understands that this means it is on the operator to pay attention to what his/her third party battery is telling him. That is, camera will not know percentage remaining so will not throw a warning or anything before shut down. Even mid-record.

This.

This is why I'm buying into Red and not spending more money with Canon or Sony.

Awesome update, Brent. You guys are killing it.

Thanks Brent for all the you do in calming the paranoid masses, LOL. Red CS rules!

I called RSH, they don't have a demo unit in so I can't test, but I have faith you guys will solve it.

Very glad to hear they're shipping whether it be 1 a day or 100 but any specifics you can spare would be nice (parts on backorder, Panavision ordered 1000 of them...) Anything to ease my curiosity / anxiety on first day orders still being allocated. (Or maybe I'm wrong)

It may sound impatient of me but just curious and can't hurt to ask :)

Will give an update tomorrow we are starting to gain some visibility :)

I smell Scarlet W coming my way soon... March 29th my b-day would be the best self-paid gift...Everrrr.

Brent,

So it seems there is a fit problem due to the fact that the battery plate surface area is constrained by the I/O section overhanging that plane. That seems like an unfortunate design decision that limits wider batteries and/or those with d-taps and other features that are wider than the rest of the battery. For example, the ET V-mount plate mounted to the Base I/O Module avoids that issue since it sits further back and the battery mounting surface is flat so it allows wider batteries to be mounted. Similar situation for the WC plate. Nothing to be done about that other than a re-design of the module and I assume that won't be happening ;)

Then there all of the various electrical communications between various batteries and the RED body. And this is not just a Scarlet problem. It is present in the Weapon as well. Our IDX Duo 150s power our Weapons just fine using the ET V-mount plate, but we only get voltage and amp readouts - no percentage or time remaining. We didn't have this issue with our Epic Dragons.

There is another issue that's been reported here:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...attery-plate&p=1597354&highlight=#post1597354

My tech tested our new IDX Duo 150's with the ET V-Lock plate to check our cameras and this is what he found:

---------

We own two RED Weapon CFs and two Scarlet-Ws. All Batteries were fully charged.

When the battery is on the camera and I power on, Camera can read the voltage and amps.
I plug the AC power cable in, the Camera reads both the battery and the AC voltage and amps.
I remove the the battery then I put it back in, the Camera does not recognize the voltage and displays as 0 in red color.
When I have done this and I remove the AC power, The Camera warns it will shut off in 25 seconds because of low battery.
To resolve this I pressed the button on the side of the battery (for LED power display readout) for over 5 sec. Now I can remove and put back the battery and the Camera will display the voltage.
In this case, when I unplug the AC power the Camera functions properly.
I had to do this with all Batteries.

I did some more experimentation and I was running into the same issue on the Scarlet-W. It seams that after a certain amount of time if the batteries are unused, I have to repeat the steps to get the battery and camera to communicate properly.

All cameras are on firmware 6.2.44

---------

So it seems there are a number of battery communication issues related to the DSMC2 cameras.

We were told by IDX that RED and ET were looking into the firmware and plate to see what may be the cause.

I hope RED can get to the bottom of it quickly—the V-Mount battery ecosystem is well established with several well-respected brands out there. Seems users should be able to choose third party batteries and they should work and communicate with the camera.

Please advise ASAP as many of us are in a position where have already invested in industry-standard main brand batteries and need to be able to use them. And then there are many who are looking for different form factors and features that RED Bricks don't offer (like USB ports, d-taps, LCD readouts, etc.) and simply need to order batteries for the new cameras. And at $300 - $450 per battery that investment can be significant.

And of course, people simply need to power up their cameras and work!

Thanks so much!

I also think we need to start a new thread on the battery issues.

There are a various issues mentioned in different threads but it would be nice to have one go to thread to follow.

Scarlet Updates

Hi,
Any mails received for SCARLET W package or we are all waiting?

Thanks

I tested PAG PL96 yesterday on a DSMC2 BASE I/O V-LOCK EXPANDER and it worked perfectly. Fit, powered on, everything...
