  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W has Begun...

I just went ahead and asked my bomb squad rep what batteries would work with the new V-Lock module and here is what she said:

WHAT THIRD-PARTY BATTERIES ARE COMPATIBLE WITH THE DSMC2 BASE I/O V-LOCK EXPANDER?
The following third-party batteries have been fit-tested by RED® and are mechanically compatible with the DSMC2™ Base I/O V-Lock Expander:
· Blueshape (All BV series)
· IDX (E-HL10DS and E-HL9)
· Sony (BP-FL75)
· Switronix (Hypercore series and XP-L90S)

"Mechanically" is the key word here. The rep is not confirming that these batteries work electrically.

And indeed Jon Betz reported that the Switronix L90S batteries *do not* power up the Scarlet-W when used on the v-lock expander.... but interestingly do work when using the WC plate to connect to the V-Lock expander DC in.

It would be awesome to get a clarification from Red on either which batteries are compatible, or if there's a particular power draw that the camera needs. Unscientifically, it looks like the batteries that people are reporting as *not* working are in the 6A range, and the ones that *are* working are in the 10A range.

However, that doesn't account for Jon's success with the L90S through the WC plate. Seems like something else is going on, which could be maybe fixed by firmware.

If the camera does indeed need 10A that's fine, but some confirmation of that - or if not, confirmation of whether a firmware patch would address the issues - would be super useful for those of us who are a) moving into big-boy batteries for the first time and b) awaiting allocation and putting together the rest of what we need for when the camera arrives.

Good point, I also wonder what the difference is between the Swit Hypercore Red vs Green versions are, they look identical, both say they are compatible with Red and they both cost the same, but one is made specifically for Red, but that one is backordered and the green version is in stock.

i heard the ones for red give information to the lcd and the green ones dont.

The red series seems to be specifically made for RED users (to show battery life/percentage reads on camera). The green's probably do work, but I'm thinking that it's not optimized to be able to send percentage or battery life on camera.

I have a couple of the red hypercore 98w batteries myself. Just waiting for the S-W to arrive. Will let you guys know if I run into any issues. Doubtful though.

Kind of shocking, but the Switronix XP-L90S DO NOT WORK.

So not even the ones in the FAQ work properly.

These were the ones I was considering purchasing, so I guess that's off the table.

I've never known of a V-mount adapter that was this finicky. Is it basically an issue of the battery communicating with the the adapter (i.e. if it can't talk, it shuts down)?

No idea what's happening, but it seems like something that should be able to be fixed.

When I first turned on the Scarlet-W with my battery it did the Countdown and then it DIDN'T turn off and I ran it for an hour or so of tinkering with no issue. Sure, the RED LED on the side blinked the whole time (as if it were empty) but it ran fine. Ever since then, it hasn't worked.

Of the 5 tested batteries (COMER, AXRTEC, HyperCore Red, Red Brick and Switronix LP90) only 2 work.

Doesn't it seem like the Scarlet W allocations are stalling a bit?

I was expecting that most if not all Scarlet W's would be allocated before Ravens start to ship. It seems like many people who ordered right away on day one still have not received their emails. Are we simply looking at several months yet before they get through all of the Scarlet W preorders?

Guys, see my last post. Sustaining engineering is checking on this. For all I know, might be a simple firmware fix. The sky might not be falling on the battery front after all : )

Troy, we are blasting away. We have a ton of orders for this bad boy and are going as quickly as we can...

The HyperCore Red and Red Bricks are the only two that are specifically coded for Red communication. That would be a huge drag if that were the case since a majority of batteries are not specially coded to communicate with Red.

I hope we can get some clarification soon. I might have a few days left to return my just bought batteries if they will not work.

the sky might not be falling on the battery front? happy face? is their something cryptic in this statement? hahaha…
raven question brent: still on track for march 17th? then brain versus pkg, we know that scarlet brains went out first because of accessory avail, but will this be the case again, or now they are avail would it matter if you have a brain or pkg order for you to receive yours first?
and any info on raven pkg having a special case?
thank you and hope you had a great weekend!

Yeah, I'm not worried, I'm just one of the only people posting about this problem as there aren't many in the wild. I have a good feeling my batteries will work fine and I can spend my money on other things like RedMag's and the Outrigger.

jordan, no hidden meaning there, trust me.

BC, we are all over it. Engineering has already found a few things we will be rolling into a beta firmware release. This should resolve the camera thinking the battery is at 0% and initializing power down sequence (ie, your current issue). Hopefully, everyone understands that this means it is on the operator to pay attention to what his/her third party battery is telling him. That is, camera will not know percentage remaining so will not throw a warning or anything before shut down. Even mid-record.

We are also going to get ins some additional batteries to test with both on fit and properly powering the camera.

Beautiful, thanks! It's an interesting experience to be an early adopter on this.
