  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet & Samyang Low-Light test...

Matt, this looks great! Can you talk a bit about your color temp choices for both camera settings and light fixtures. Interested in the blue hue you got going on here. Thanks

Thanks Jeremy :) Color temp was 3200 to really cool off the blue "moonlight" and back the flame off a touch. Lighting is coming in a lighting diagram at the blog soon (under my LIGHTING diagram section), but basically an LED and a match :)

So I have set 85,35,24, & once the 14mm. But ditched it for the 11- 16 Tokina, same F stop from memory plus the 14 (I had) had a fixed hood hence useless with a MB.

So a question I think the 16mm is half a stop or so faster then the tonkina. Outside of speed how do these lenses compare ?

The 16 is hell sharper, a half stop faster and has nicer distortion than the Tokina at 16 :) And let's not even talk about build quality, ease of focus. Thanks for the comments :) I'm also going to post my findings when I compared these to my trusty Nikkors wide open. The 24 is absolutely fine, better than my "sharp" 24 nikkor...sure it's not the best wide open on a test chart, but test charts are for talkers, not doers ;)

I am over the blue now though....today I re-graded this piece with an aim to balance the blues and it looks WAY BETTER!

Love your approach to grading Matt. You should do a couple of resolve tutorials. I'll be in for sure.

I second that!

Matt you really like the 16mm?
I have the Rokinon Cine 24/35/85 and would like a 50mm someday.
Wondering if I really need a 16mm.
I have a Tokina 11-16mm but not enjoying that indoors :(
I shot this for fun with the 35mm.

Yeah man, honestly the 16 is soooo good! I used to cringe whenever I pulled out the Tokina... But now I invite wide shots into my brain hehe :) nice clip Btw :)

Thanks Matthew that was just a quick drive around and not get shot at by farmers day ;)

As far as low light goes, I shot this during one my gigs (between sets).

I tell yaa during the shoot I thought for sure I would never resurrect anything from the clips.

I love my RED and def think the Rokinons hold well :)

Rokinons definitely hold well in my opinion as well. Loved the look of what you shot in the low light as well. I need to invest in the 24mm still myself but thats my next buy as soon as I can.

Thanks Chris I really thought I would have to dig into Resolve for that one.
It was personal fun project and didnt want to spend any resources on it.
Amazing what REDCine can do for free ;)

Now if we can only get Rokinon to complete the set with a 50mm and above 100mm :)

Awesome images, love the sharpness of them and how well they work out in low light! Best money I've spent investing in a set of these cine lenses!

agreed, I've got the 14/24/35/85 kit and use it for most of my day to day and run&gun work.....for the price you cant get anything better.

I shot this video a couple of weeks ago in a pretty dark warehouse, most of these shots are wide open on the samyangs and I had to push them a little in post:

I'm so sad...

I have the Rokinon 14, 16, 24, 35 and 85 (all cine) but a friend dropped my 35 on set and now I'm getting BRUTAL halation on the lens. I never had the heart to make him buy me a new one and now it's just a giant hole in my line up.

:'(
