In preparation for a commercial I'm shooting early December, I got some good friends together last night and tested out my new Samyang(Rokinon) Cine lenses. I already compared them to my Nikkors in terms of detail and sharpness, distortion, etc, in a boring and controlled environment, but this test was to see how they performed wide open, in ultra low light, in a (god I hate using this term) "real-world" environment hehe :) Still loving my scarlet, and now loving my new lens kit. The 16 is a pearla!

A detailed blog post about low-light shooting, the lenses and more on the exciting commercial is coming, but for now I just wanted to share these frame grabs.

Matt, that looks really good. Your lighting tutorials have been a great help to me on set. Always happy to see your work... Thanks for sharing...

I can check for you when I get back...If you can wait a week? I'm imagining that it WON'T cover 5K since the 16mm is designed for APSC and even though 5K is technically not full frame (1.3 x crop), I'm pretty sure you'll be stuck around 4.5K max.

Here's the moving footage.....from the Samurai Blade, but not bad for 1080p 10-bit! (flames are blown out in 10-bit and there is some banding). Make sure you watch this test with headphones on or the volume up ;)

Awesome images, love the sharpness of them and how well they work out in low light! Best money I've spent investing in a set of these cine lenses!

Thanks Chris! Yes, they are amazingly good. I didn't get the 14mm but might some day. The Tokina 11-16 is doing fine in that department anyway.

I held off on rounding out my set with the 24mm because I keep hearing about how it's the "weakest" one, but very few specifics. Anyone know what makes it the "weakest"? Is it terribly soft or something?

The 24 is soft wide-open, but it also ghosts heavily compared to the 35 and 85. The 16 looks good, but I'm starting to lean towards the sigma… Wish they had a "cine" version of that for $50 more.

I haven't used it myself, but someone posted some pictures in this thread - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?107901-Samyang-Cinema-kit-missing-a-key-lens/page3

Looks like the 24mm goes a bit softer when wide open at T1.5 than the 35mm and 85mm do. By T2.0 they all look a bit more even though.

Matt, this looks great! Can you talk a bit about your color temp choices for both camera settings and light fixtures. Interested in the blue hue you got going on here. Thanks

So I have set 85,35,24, & once the 14mm. But ditched it for the 11- 16 Tokina, same F stop from memory plus the 14 (I had) had a fixed hood hence useless with a MB.

So a question I think the 16mm is half a stop or so faster then the tonkina. Outside of speed how do these lenses compare ?

Great images! Thanks for sharing and showing what real lowlight stuff can look like. :)
