  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

Silly post... why do you say that? Some people actually might believe you if you write stuff like this.

Jim

I don't mean release date I understand It will be very soon!
But I mean Stage 4 so for everyone and real ability to buy! Release date in the begin of 2011 is feat of arms but....
But here is my dilettante count: mass production from April and about a few hundreds (500-800) Epics for Stage 2, 3, 3,5 for the nearest few month during the summer I think! Deficit! So I think Stage 4 need to wait before production will grow all owners of RED ONE will get Deficit Epic! So I tnink it will happend about autumn and then Stage 4!
But your angry post tell me It will happened earlier! Do you hope I am wrong and I and people like me form Stage 4 will be able to but Epic-S before autumn 2011! I mean limited production, turn and something like that?

This thread is silly. Pigs are about to fly. The moon is about to turn blue. The first EPICs stand to ship before we ring in the New Year! And instead of looking towards the sky, we turn to look at the mud.

Here are my prognostications:

The ability to add HDRx™™™™™ to all of their cameras has shifted the business model - as well it should. No one else has this - other camera companies are showing the will to produce higher-rez cameras and 35mm options. RED is skating towards where the puck will be. That is latitude and RAW.

EPIC - S35 and HIGHER
SCARLET - essentially same specs with 2/3'' sensor, maybe some frame-rate differentiation, weight and mobility differentiations will be paramount

This way they are offering a line of systems which pros will need - it isn't broken out by these tired old terminologies of consumer, prosumer, and pro. It is simply a product line of tools professionals need and use, with different camera options for different applications (heavier, lighter, bigger, smaller, deep focus, shallow DOF - it's all there). Consumers and prosumers who aspire are included.

I feel like the faster they can put the old categories behind them, the happier they will be. People will then buy the cameras because they want HDRx™™™™™ and RAW, not because it has anything to do with S35 for cheap - that already exists and the players who are skating alongside the puck, instead of where it is headed, are already dishing out great options at great price points. As these options continue trickling out, the old SCARLET option is increasingly obsolete. Good riddance. HDRx™™™™™ is the future.

Those people who wanted SCARLET specs and price points will be able to pick up MXed RED ONES for about the same price point, eventually, because HDRx™™™™™ will make this still-great camera, a true digital cinema system, much more affordable down the road.

All this talk about cameras is of course, crowding out the elephant in the room, which is DELIVERY SYSTEMS!

The next real frontier, where RED is skating, is going to be making 4K a de facto standard, and my prediction is that, once these cameras are out, Jim won't go to Fiji at all, he'll have the camera he wants but he will want everyone to see it in all its glory. And that means better delivery and viewing systems.

It will take years, I'm betting, before the market fully absorbs all that the EPIC will become to the imaging world -- HDRx™™™™™ is that revolutionary. In that time, RED will still work on bigger, better sensors and technology and continue to refine post-production.

But the foundation they will have built will be so much bigger and better, that they will be out there solving the delivery chain, while everyone else is just waking up to how far behind their acquistion systems have become.

RED RAY...I haven't heard that spoken in awhile, and yet we have all seen the working prototypes, which we will probably not see in production until after many EPIC cameras are released. But when we see it, there will be as much of a scramble -- MORE -- than Scarlet S35 ever was. Or ever could be.

My prognostication is: there is something going on behind the scenes that we can't see and that no one is talking about, and when it is unleashed, it will change everything. When Jim said he's not talking - I think THAT is what he is not talking about!

It won't be a camera. Cameras? Done. It will be much bigger than that. And it will be affordable. And it will be everywhere.

OK... now I get it. But you'll have it in 2011.

Would it be possible, when you announce the Epic Light details... to also let us know your thoughts on delivery.... not a launch date, as such... but how you see orders being taken and fullfilled.

Will Epic Light be behind Epic-x stage 4? Will R1 owners get ahead of the queue? I have similar questions about Scarlet/accessories too.

My concern is seeing a "buy now" button and then being on back order for months or even years... or having a camera but no accessories.

I'm sure these points have been asked many times, so please ignore them, if they have... I'm just struggling to find answers using the search feature.

hi Jim do you think its possible you can set back up the link to the different models of Scarllet and epics like you used too! with the different size of sensorz. all this epic-S,M Epic- light and all that and scarllet S35 is getting me confused!! it would be nice if we could be able to tell the different specs between them!! like frame rate and resolution!! and price range they will be with in!!!

I, for one, am VERY relieved that the 2/3" systems are on track. With 3D becoming more and more prevalent, more people are realizing that deep focus is one of the more important assets for 3D, as much as shallow DOF works against it, and as it is, 2/3" is about the biggest you can go without loosing focus every time you need to open up your iris. Also, I would be willing to bet Jim a box of Cohibas or Monte Cristos, or whatever he wants, than three years from now, the best selling RED camera will be the Scarlet 2/3" interchangeable, since there are hundreds of thousands of people around the world who own B4 glass, myself included, and being able to finally get rid of those huge Sony or Panasonic 2/3" monstrosities, I mean, cameras, and use that well taken care of, paid for, and well known glass, in all of its auto focus beauty, deep DOF and full range of focal lengths, on a RED package, with its small footprint and its awesome RAW and HDRx capabilities will be spark a buying frenzy. In fact, I will probably save my money, skip the Epic altogether, rent it whenever I need it, or whenever I can't resist the temptation to play with it, and wait until I can buy 2-3 of the 2/3" Scarlets, since in my situation, shooting a lot of 3D and nature stuff, that's the system that suits my needs best. Oh and Jim, I'm serious about the cigars, and being of Cuban origin, believe me, I know where to get you the freshest stuff...

Will the fixed Scarlet work for side-by-side 3D?

2011 sounds so good, mind the perfect run and gun Scarlet fixed or Epic Light will not be around for my months shooting in the Caribbean :( come January/February 2011, but hoping for the European shoots come May June July :) lets hope, if not my trusted EX1R will still produce some wonderful shots for another 6 to 9 months.

Just waiting patiently as always, it will arrive when it arrives.

For me the R1 is too big and heavy and with having to travel light and shoot from the hip so to speak, a lot of different locations in a day, very quick set up required, it was never really an option for me.

As of now... we are considering:

EPIC-S (from the old Scarlet name... or STANDARD model)
EPIC-X
EPIC-M (for monster machined)

Does that work for everyone? :-)

Jim

Yes. To me the "Lite" name doesn't seem in keeping with a professional product line (just my opinion)

Epic S like that same letter as my surname :) personalised already Yeah way cool

Probably gonna have to wait till cameras are closer to release.
...price info. and tech. details can tell other companies what
targets they need to hit. And since so many cameras seem to be
coming out next year..it's a sensitive time for tossing out info.
But we have been told to expect Scarlet news...

Even though the Scarlet S35 has just changed to EPIC Light... we have some big news coming regarding the Scarlet program. I am a big Scarlet fan and am excited at what we are brewing for the Scarlet program.

Everything moves fast around here... stay tuned. Jim

Hi everyone, this is my first post, and just want to share my few thoughts on the RED Camera development. After reading a lot of posts and checking out the new cameras, I'm too very excited. Is it true that we might be able to buy Epic-S, or Scarlet interchangeable in 2011? Because right now I own Sony EX1, and I'm looking for better DOF in my new camera. Does anyone know how will the new HDRx™ sensor behave in low light?

By all accounts, screenshots, etc ... fabulous

Patrik,

Welcome!

As for HDRx, it's not a new sensor but rather a new way of reading the sensor that adds more lattitude to the highlights. So, HDRx won't really help w/ low light, but it will help very much so if you have a scene with a combination of low light and very bright light.
