  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

If you see the Scarlet Fixed as somehow limiting to your toolset as a filmmaker because its not "35mm" then what does that really say about your plans and your skills? If you can't make compelling cinema with the Scarlet Fixed then you have a deficit of creativity and skill that no 35mm camera will ever make up for.
Well said. My sentiments exactly.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Too many here are freaking on the price of this standard Epic.
What might have happened is that it cost more than the $1,000
to add HDRx™ as the S35 sensor is couple times bigger than the 2/3.
So maybe it costs couple thousand more..who knows..we have to
wait.
I don't know if "freaking" is accurate -- maybe "concerned" is better.

They are trying to make the best cameras at the best price as quoted above. Sony has thrown a S35 out there and you can assume Red will be competitive price wise with it.
Yeah, but depending on where you shop and whether you get the Sony lenses and/or 4:4:4 S-log upgrade, you might be looking at $13.3K (B&H, no lenses) to $25K+ (MSRP w/ lenses plus extra for the future upgrade). Even the lower figure is almost 50% more than the 2009 price (the last one we saw) plus $2K (not $1K) for HDRx. That would be a sizable jump (a difference of almost equal to the fixed Scarlet's total price). I guess I'm hoping it'll be much less.

Just for the record, Jim Jannard has said, "No large price increase other than what was stated. If we add boards and ASICs, it will cost more. The only reason we would do that is for EasyHDR and HDRx. That would only be for Scarlet 2/3", 2/3" Fixed and Scarlet S35." I know this is subject to change, but I hope Jim sticks to it as much as possible, even with the rebranding of the Scarlet S35.

That's a gem.

YES!!!

I'm sure he will, but Made In The U.S. is likely to change things considerably. I hope not to need it, but the crying towel is at the ready.

Insert coal into rectum, receive diamond in 4 to 6 weeks. Redeem for one Epic S brain.

Who wants to get together a group buy on coal? :smilielol5:

Couldn't resist.

Can we all go back to being geeked up about the new cameras?

I trust Jim and Red Team can figure out a naming strategy that will not flummox rental house personnel. Producers,... they may be beyond help... I kid, I kid...

Cheers - #19

I happen to have a nice pile of coal already... Who wants to buy? :)

Anyway, this discussion is pretty F'd up... I don't care what Jim wants to name the cameras, he can call them whatever he wants. If I have any say in it, I would suggest he names them whatever will make them roll off the assembly line the fastest.

I think EPIC-S, EPIC-X and EPIC-M are fine. Anyone who follows the forum, even casually, should understand. If they spell out what the letter designators mean, people will understand. I preferred EPIC-Light, but I understand that some of the more insecure types will have an issue with anything "light". So, on that note, I think Jim should consider naming the EPIC 617 "The Compensator". ...Anyone want to compare "sensor" sizes? I bet mine's bigger.

Last time I looked, coal was a miner commodity.

As of now... we are considering:

EPIC-S (from the old Scarlet name... or STANDARD model)
EPIC-X
EPIC-M (for monster machined)

Does that work for everyone? :-)

Jim

word! exactly my thoughts.

I do agree with Epic-S, makes total sense as it is the "S" of Scarlett.

I do agree with the Epic- X as I love it form the start ;)

But I just simply can't really get my mind to like the Epic-M as for some reason this camera,
been that it is the New Flag SHip camera of RED, an "M" does not do it for me ;(

I would love to see something that gives it the Grandiosity that it Deserves ;)

But if this is the final out put on the camera, I'm sure I'll come to Love it just the same hehe.

Has it been officially confirmed that Epic-S will be manufactured in the U.S.? I know that previously Jim Jannard said that Epics would be manufactured stateside. Was Scarlet S35 ever slated for manufacture overseas, and if so, was that still the case up through inclusion of HDRx and any other design changes? If it was still scheduled for manufacture overseas at that point, why move production to the U.S. just because it's now in the Epic line? Wouldn't that cause unnecessary [best Sir Topham Hatt voice] confusion and delay -- not to mention a heap of additional costs?

No..no..no..made in U.S.A will not change things. Possibly even Scarlet
may be made in U.S. Guys Jannard has said all of this...His posts are very clear and concise.
How often do you get insight into a process by someone who has created 2 global corps..mmm..never.
In general this site has an overdose of Red worship and praise..yet it seems not many
are paying attention to the words when they do come out. If the price
of the standard epic is increased..the features will also be so no worries.

I don't think this article said anything about buying American... and for all you "buzz-kill" guys, if somebody doesn't design, engineer and make something in the US... we are all in trouble. It would be sad, in my eyes, to see the US become a service only country.

Almost 90% of the sunglasses that Oakley sells are made in Foothill Ranch. And our current plan is to manufacture EPIC in the US....completely. That doesn't mean that you need to buy one over a German or Japanese product... it just means that we believe in the capability for US companies to compete heads up with the rest of the world...Jim

To compound matters, the company that was to make Scarlet has made an incredible announcement recently and has significant issues. You can probably figure out who this is. This will force us to find a new
manufacturing partner for that product. When we 1st got wind of this, we decided to make EPIC in the US, hoping that the company would
find a solution in time for Scarlet production. That now seems unlikely so we are now scrambling for a new partner.

I have started two companies... Oakley and RED... and have never seen anything like this in 35 years of business. We will get past
these obstacles. No question about it. But we are going to need patience from our customers.

Now that I am back, I will promise to keep you informed. Good news and bad.

Don't hold your breath Steve.

Lawrence, as Steve quoted, Jim did clearly say that Epic would be made in the states. Now that Scarlet S35 is an Epic, it is a reasonable assumption that it will be made here, but that has not been confirmed to my knowledge. It is also logical to conclude that moving Scarlet S35 manufacture from Asia to the U.S. would raise the cost. There is nothing in Steve's quotes to refute that. I don't think Jim has spoken of it publicly at all yet.

Well, just my .02
If they are named S or X you can talk to the Rental company with phonetics
Epic Sierra, Epic X-ray (sorry, I'm former Signal Corp).
But...X usually means the number 10 or experimental.

How about
Epic SX Standard features
Epic EX Enhanced features
Epic MX - Hand crafted Enhanced features?

No problem with the Rental companies either.
OK, I'm done. Back to reading.

Since I am making compound presumptions I will also predict that the difference in price between Epic-X and "Epic-S" will ultimately be roughly equal to the cost of the additional components. My guess would be in the neighborhood of $5-8k difference.

OK boys... this is not the NBA Finals. We haven't locked anything in stone. We'll listen to respectful suggestions, add some of our own thoughts and make a decision without a vote. I have been known to close threads.

Jim

I really don't care about the name change, only if the price increases and if some features will be cut.

That was when the only Epic was Epic-X, before Scarlet S35 joined the Epic line.

Now that Scarlet S35 is an Epic, it is a reasonable assumption that it will be made here, but that has not been confirmed to my knowledge.
It's also a reasonable assumption that if, other than the rebranding, Scarlet S35 hasn't significantly changed since it was slated for manufacture in Asia -- that is, there was no reason, other than a name change, to move manufacture to the U.S. -- it would still be manufactured in Asia. Everything is subject to change.

It is also logical to conclude that moving Scarlet S35 manufacture from Asia to the U.S. would raise the cost. There is nothing in Steve's quotes to refute that. I don't think Jim has spoken of it publicly at all yet.
I don't doubt the costs would increase.

Totally agree with you on this Jeff.
