I hope they release a slick Scarlet reel or some nice real world promo footage as part of the November 3rd announcement. I think that would help people who are still on the fence, even after knowing specs and price , to make up their minds instantly and definitively.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be especially nice to have it screen on their Large Screen at RSH that night as well in order to really do the footage justice for those of us that are able to attend the event.

Very much agree with you there.

Even iPhone 4S released their photos untouched to show what it can do.

There is already sample footage of SCARLET out there, but I don't believe it shows enough variety. I'm sure RED will release samples with the camera.

That would be cool - although does anyone agree that promo footage is a little... biased? Each shot would be heavily produced/graded. It makes sense to push the potential of cameras featured in promos, but more than a promo video I'd love to see some natural light amateur footage with absolutely no post on it.

Has anyone here seen the GoPro Hero2 promo video? Looks incredible. But it's a perfect example of a promo vid with a hell of a lot of work done on it, as opposed to showing the raw potential of the camera. /end verbal thought

I know what you mean, but honestly, even heavily processed...I am an End-Product kind of guy. Its all about how the image looks in the end that matters. So if I see a heavily graded, touched up piece of footage that looks spectacular, that means, if one can do it, others can too! Bring it on!

I would like to see some motion and still frames. I as a fashion/beauty photographer shooting video when needed on the 5D. I want to see something that moves me to RED Scarlet or leaves me shooting both on the new 1DX?

Touche'... I guess at this stage anything would be awesome ha. 7 days to go....

I think it will be cool if they have working cameras at the event so we can have real life impressions from regular people. (Meaning people who have never held or used a Scarlet before)

Scarlet is not a video camera. It shoots raw format images that have to be post processed to some extent to even view them. One can simply set a choice of color space, gamma, and white balance as a minimum without further grading, but that defeats the whole purpose of raw acquisition in the first place. Raw is made to grade. It is the range of creative possibilities in grading and post that truly sets these cameras apart.

It is one reason I dislike a lot of these comparison videos between Reds and video cameras where the Red is also treated like just another video camera. Virtually all of the settings that you have to nail on set with a video camera to get good images are just meta data in a Red clip that can be manipulated at will in post. Not using this capability to its fullest out of some misbegotten sense of "fairness" for comparison purposes misrepresents what these cameras do best.

100% true.

Also, to me, the Scarlet footage that was released looked like it had very little of a grade on it. It looked pretty close to "Set settings to Default, hit Export." To me, I see a BUCKET LOAD of potential in that shot. You could push and pull and tweak and alter the hell out of it. I look at that Scarlet shot, and I see POTENTIAL. It's a powerful thing to see. It's why I'm waiting with baited breath for Nov 3. If it hits the right cost and has an interchangeable lens, and I'm pulling the trigger. If not, I'll just have to save up a bunch more, and get something else (Red One MX would be next, but that would put me a year or two away from owning my own Red).

Great post David.

Best summation to date of what I love about Red. Bumper stickers needed: "Made to Grade"
:cheers2:

I predict that they'll sell boatloads of these, without a frame of footage. Those who are still on the fence will be left behind, in the back order queue or shooting their EX-1s (good camera, I own one). All they need to focus on right now, is shipping cameras. All kinds of footage, of various styles and qualities will appear within moments, like magic....

I am primarily a Wedding shooter the past few years, and "Same"... shooting "stills"... and vid occasionally when I need it... The "insane" fps that one can get out of the Epics, and or DSMC has got me chompin at the bit to see what Scarlet might be capable of in the same arena. (Talk about never missing an important shot)... So... "Yeah"... would love to see the motion still frames as well... and perhaps even a comparison to same shots "epic"... or even release some stuff the next few days that is actually Scarlet... but tell everyone its Epic shots... now that would be a hoot... ! Anyways.... tiz going to be exciting.... Whatever the spec... and surly the image will be supurb and or "Measure ably better" dynamic range wise than anything out there in its price point... this is going to be a fun week ! Additionally and most of us can relate... every time we "upgrade" our image making with new gear.... sometimes it really tax's whatever system we are editing on..... Hopefully their will be good info on "min spec"... systems to edit with. (Alienware quadcore here with 12g ram, and nvidia dual cards, also... in the still world... will "lightroom" process stills out of a scarlet ?
ok im done LOL
Motor City High Fives Jim.... (worked for Oakley for almost 9yrs in the Midwest)... Im sure this gear is going to be some really cool stuff ! (grin) Can't F****ing wait !

What makes you say that?

What is the "hell of a lot" that has been done to it. I'm sure contrast/exposure has been tweaked as much as it can. Is this not expected?

GoPro releases their Hero 2 for $299. They then give their customers the Cineform wavelet intermediate free of charge in their Studio software. You can buy a waterproof 3D rig and two wide angle 1080p cameras from GoPro for $697.

GoPro is easily the most innovative moving images company out there today, that has done most for "the masses".

For $299 you get the camera AND the suction cup to mount the camera to a race car, for crying out loud!

Further regarding RED, GoPro et al: every camera is made to grade.

What camera ISN'T supposed to look as good as possible at delivery?

There is no cheating here. RED just makes it soooo much easier/better by providing RAW.

AMEN..... Every time I view a Vimeo clip... or even a "gopro" clip that looks insane... I think to myself... I have those resources ... I should be able to do that to... !!! Its "inspirational".... and more over.... Motovational ! In the still world where i primarly live with "weddings"... raw is king... I personally love the "look" of the Red "stills" i have seen... and most of them... "motion stills taken out of streams..." (not sure if i said that right).... bottom line is I just f****** love the "look" of the Red "still" files... and am hoping and betting....knowing Jim.... That regarless of weather the Scarlet image is a "Epic" image or not.... I guess frankly I could care less.... and would be kind of excited if it were more its own "flavor" but still super cool..... I would love to see Scarlet be a "cuzin" to.... the other Red family of images... but id be really happy as a tiny little indy wedding guy... if it was its own little world... caught between hi end Dslrs.... and the holy grail of the Epic.... to me.... and i have sort of digressed on it before.... almost in the world of 16mm vs... 35mm..... both very very capable formats.... but different limitations, looks, and outcomes depending on how you use it.... this hopefully will be a very very fun "expansion" of the Red family for all of us.... If it does turn out to be fundamentally different in some ways.... mark my words... I would bet given it will be a killer killer cool look that you cant get with "Epic" as this whole company "matures"... you will even see productions that could totally afford Epic... shooting on Scarlet because that is a look they cant get otherwise.....
"Just a guess".... will be fun to see how the "cuzins" get along.....

I watched this video on vimeo - I wonder if it will be on the "reel"? Or did they just make a mistake in their credits/keywords?

I sure hope it is, looks great.

The keywords were just used to get more hits for this video. Nothing more. No way they shot with 7D, 5D, SCarlet and Epic in one continuous shot.
