  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

Really? By Red's own admission (read Jon Sagud's FAQ), Red has been messing around with Scarlet's configurations maybe too much.

I can see how my point was up for misinterpretation.

What I meant was, once they got the Scarlet to Ted's state-the one we've been seeing lately-, I think they've mostly been doing refinement.

I have gotten the sense that RED is pretty happy with what TED has been carrying around. It's good looking, packs a great punch, screams PRO.

Sensor size (not DSMC), poor battery life and expensive media are the main drawbacks in my book. But it's still a really cool camera that I really want.

I would MUCH rather have something that I can mount Canon glass to (so S35 and upwards), that I can also use for stills, but I don't see that at this time. Many do.

Not so long until we all find out...

PS. I read Jon's FAQ. It was I who reposted it! When he says he's sitting with a Scarlet on his desk and that we might be soon too, I see Ted's Scarlet in front of me. Not some half done prototype about to change shape anytime soon....

He came, he saw, he's waiting till the 3rd to make a real comment.

Right now I will be happy for: 1) The camera to be released 2) Be able to budget and work out the cost of a Scarlet package 3) Either buy or rent one and shoot with it.

If anyone is shocked the price has gone up they were in denial. We already knew things have changed, and know that would equate to a price hike. How much it has gone up remains to be seen.

Am waiting in anticipation.

I'm really excited by this post because it makes me believe that Jim realized that 3k just doesn't make sense within Red's 4k+ philosophy.

I agree, it appears most likely it's still the same 2/3-inch 3K camera. But you ignore the possibility of parallel development of an as-yet unannounced 4K APS-C model. Despite its reputation of what amounts to thinking out loud, even at its blabbiest Red has never divulged all of its activity. I'm not saying it's certain, just that anything's possible.

On a side note, Jim's comment "No one will be disappointed if they ignore all previous conceived notions" seemed a little curious. It's like saying, "If you have no expectations, you won't be disappointed."

What I find hard to believe about the "parallel development" theory is that RED has been very, very public about the development of the Scarlet 2/3" Fixed. Given that, do you really, truly believe they are the type of company that would be developing another camera at the same time and saying absolutely nothing? Have they EVER done that? Sorry, I don't buy it.

I'm going to defend Mike here because I work with some of these DPs and they choose Alexa because they like how it looks. Guys, I can't stress enough, I love RED, I'm invested in RED, I defend them when appropriate (most of the time they can defend themselves), but I can't overlook the fact that some people just like what Alexa or other cameras give them. Just like some like the look RED gives them. We have to be careful about living in an isolated world because it's not reality. People make choices that go far beyond resolution, and yes sometimes it involves politics but often it also just involves taste. There is enough pie to go around for everyone, if we could just embrace it and not have to make it an Us vs Them, it really becomes a more positive environment, don't you think?

steve.

point 1 - was that Dp's are not yearning to shoot 1080p

and my comment was that mike comment seemed to me slanted towards the Arri/red thing

Alexa does look good but im sure if you let a dp have a codex atop of the camera no DP is going to say "get that thing off the camera"

that was my point

Maybe Im just stupid but I really cant see the bad news. It's all good baby, not good, better !
And for the question about scarlet vs canon ? aside RED beeing a winner in my book compared to any other company in the world, redcode is the key for me.

1080 is about to become the new Black & White.

You can still shoot amazing movies on it. But it's a lot harder to convince distributors to pay you for it -
It's not the ammount of pixels, but the quality of them. Alexa is on the top of that list right now.

Of course not! What is money these days? Ah, of course nothing! Jack it up to $10K, $15, hey, make it $20K! I am sure the majority of people in this forum are more than well off to afford anything that is put out there. That's why everybody here is a filmmaker, because making money is real easy doing it. After all, everybody here belongs to the 1%! Let's hear it from everybody once again: make the price go even higher! YEAAAAH! Let's use the PEOPLE'S MICROPHONE!

Good news is that you won't find an option like this.

Jim

Parsing this...

Cannot be over $10k

Cannot be "slightly under 10k".

Only option left is, well, more than slightly under 10k.

You want some cheese with that whine? There's healthy sarcasm, then there's preemptive whining. This is the latter. You aren't owed anything! RED is a business, that offers a product, at a premium. You don't like the Scarlet price/specifics, (before even knowing them, I might add!) too bad! Go buy a Flip Camera on ebay. The culture of entitlement is exhausting. At least show some respect, name one other company that offers more in terms of price and performance? Hint: Any answer you give besides "no one" is wrong. Gain a good attitude, lest the cycle continue!

It will be interesting to see who's willing to spend more than $6,000 on a camera with one and only one lens...Not many professionals, I think.

If "that list" is based on Alexa's popularity in episodic television ... sure ... but I'd emphasis "right now" and that is a fleeting moment in time.

By then end of 2013 the majority of narrative, scripted episodic TV will be shot in 4K.
